This is great info. I am a Black American. And this is very helpful and most importantly you didn’t address it in a harmful or hurtful way. Though I see some in the comments took it differently, “Colonizer vibes” was an excellent phrase to use. It was alarming but you explained how. Because after raising awareness, there’s feedback, and then adjustments that more beneficial to the community and more aligned with the culture…good job sis✌🏾

There are literally thousands of African Americans who have made the transition successfully. And they have had no major problems with making the move. Then, there are some who have failed to make the transition successfully. Mindset and willingness to culturally immerse oneself into the local culture without Western presumptions is the key to making the move successfully.

This is what I'm talking about. I never said they couldn't move but that's what people heard. Moving into another culture and expecting the natives to conform to you is colonial behavior. The same is true for Black immigrants who move to the Global North.

Colonization and colonizers is a whole different set of rules. Just check out how the British ruled Jamaica and took all but gave back little to nothing.

You are soooo right! I have been telling black Americans that and I have been telling Afro and Indo Caribbean acquaintances that for yearrrrs! We are the personality of our nation, of our culture regardless of our color. Being of the diaspora does not guarantee unity. The best thing to do is to travel not as a tourist but as someone who's willing to learn of the people, they're history. If you live in a community or work with someone of the diaspora from another land, talk to them, learn from each other. It's really sad that black Americans welcomed people who looked like them just to be mistrusted because of rumors, media lies and so forth. I feel sorry for those with high expectations who move to Africa, Latin America, West Indies who are dejected but, it can be turned around by learning about one another's culture and history, you know, sharing! If that's the case, then African-Americans are on their own… We must take care of each other ...
Ghana actively pursued African-Americans with their campaign slogan "Anniversary of The Return Home" They should reframe that.
There are psychological layers for ancestors of the enslaved folk from the Americas. It means something completely different than a visit from a tourist.
There must be another solution for finding a safe space in the world. Though, I completely agree about respecting the culture, I understand that Americans have also been scammed for their resources, even when they appropriately respect the culture.

Colonizer? Bad word choice. I admire your courage in tackling very touchy subjects. Subjects that our Jamaican gentry would be terrified to even discuss. BUT some things, though not perfect, are of massive importance. Over the centuries, millions have been spent to keep African diaspora from even thinking of Africa as a place to visit, let alone, to live. The mental blockage has started to crumble, but it will not be "smooth sailing going the other way across the Atlantic." Your words, however, can make it worse. Remember what happened in Rwanda. The person who drew your ire, I am sure, does not have a quarter the education that you have, hece her behavior. BUT WE NEED THEM ALL. In order for us TO GO HOME. We all will adjust to our new but necessary surroundings in time.

Their ancestors have created a completely separate culture(s) and cannot relate to the locals there outside of knowing their most distant forebearers were taken from there. Calling them colonizers is a stretch but they're akin to it, especially when those who can afford to move are purchasing land which many locals can't afford to do.
