City girl here, I know my great grandmother had a “victory “ garden in the city and was the go to person for the neighborhood on how to grow, preserve etc… she was also the one everyone went to for medicinal herb uses.( she was from Ireland originally) I really wish that the subsequent generations would have kept the tradition and knowledge going! In our current environment, political, environmental etc….it so important that you pass your skills on to the next generations so they are not lost! Good for you and your family!

When you use weedeater, pay attention to rotation of the "string" so that your cuttings fly away from where you don't want it

My fall red raspberries produce way more than in the spring. I am still harvesting. I keep thinking they are going to be out of berries, but there are still more. Mine Deffinately need some managing though as lots are on the ground. So glad you posted this. ❤️🙏
Those grapes look delicious! I started 2 small grape plants. I was excited to see 2 bunches but soon as they were almost ready a squirrel or chipmunk got them!
Time to have squirrel for dinner! lol.

So happy to hear you discuss coping with your empty nest. I remember being worried about our first vacation without kids. Were we really going to have a good time one on one for a full week, 24/7? One of our best vacations ever. We make a point of doing things together when possible, but it takes thought and deliberation. We’ve been married 53 years.

Empty nesting is a hard thing at first. Adjusting to cooking and putting up less takes time. You are doing it right! The next generation is more than worth time and effort. God bless!
Those fruit plants look beautiful and you were very blessed to get some fruit on the first year!! Next year you will have more grapes and berries than you know what to do with!! With blueberries just know that those plants are very picky about the soil!! Love the drone footage and yes the summer is lingering on lol!!

I absolutely love your ideas with the cattle panels, mesh, and pressure treated lumber. I plan to incorporate my large wagon wheels on top of heavy duty pipe, for posts into mine as well. The wheels are John Deere yellow and the pipe is John Deere green. I already had them made but wanted a good design and now you have given it to me. Thanks!

Did you put the wood on top of the weed cloth or on the grass next to the weed cloth? I just couldn't tell but kept thinking how will you replace the weed cloth (if/when needed) if you put it on the cloth? It looks so nice AND the plants look like they can breath in lots of fresh air. Sure love watching how you two improve your piece of land every year. Congrats on a job well done.
It’s on top. If/when the cloth needs to be replaced we will have to remove the logs and put them back down. The cloth should last many years though before that needs to be done.
We got some surprise raspberries off the plants we put in this spring as well.

LOL! Kevin, I agree with you! Trimming off new growth hurts my heart, even though it is for the betterment of the crop. I work hard just to get new growth; it seems wrong to cut it off.

In 1980, I was given two 100 year old concord grapes. They were the seeded type. I never pruned them. They grew over e everything. One of the harvests , I didn't pick every cluster, I got over 40 pounds of grapes. Makes the best jellies and juice. I know everyone is different but I cringe at pruning. Best wishes
Glad to see you are not making the mistake I did with the blackberries . My branches grew to 15 feet, got tangled, and leaned over and pegged into the ground. I have back issues, and discovered I could take the strongest 2 for 3 shoots in each cluster. I clipped them at head height and attached to my wire.. As side shoots got too long, I cut the tips. Then that branch put out side shoots. I trimmed away any lower branches that required me to bend over. The result was a kind of umbrella shape that was loaded with berries this summet.
The thornless blackberry you should not cut the tops off. You must train the stems as they grow the first year. You have the trellis so just bend next years growth to the trellis.

When the soil is workable, consider running a narrower tined rototiller on the grass side of your wood framed, landscape fabriced, berry and grape runs. The concept is to break-up and disrupt the rooting and riazomes of the grasses. Optionally rake the grass clump with thier roots and riazomes. Try also for a late fall tilling to expose roots and seeds to the cold winter temps. Some people till once a month for the first hear from as eae,y in thenhear as possible to as late in thenhear as possible and then mid winter if you get a dry week or two.

The grass at my home would send a rhizome under the weed fabric and send shoots up through every hole. (like around your plants)
Sarah and Kevin, do you ever use grape leaves in your pickles? I heard they are rich in tannins which help keep pickles crisp. Or am I wrong about that?
We have heard that also but haven’t tried it. Maybe next year we will. Cucumbers are all done for this year.
I have learned you get grapes on second year vine. and you cut off the producing branch and grow a new branch for next years crop.
Do consider some pruning propagation of both your grapes and all of your berry vines. If nothing else, some of those rocky areas on other parts of your property could probably support at least the grapes; traditional grapes grow well in rocky places with poor soil. Certainly many types of black berries grow well in less than hospitable conditions. But, consider trying if you can get some of them to naturalize untended else where on your property for human amd critter foraging.
PS - i don't know about the legalities of it but maybe grape and berry starts would sell with the seedlings at the Farmer's Market as well.

I love makin dolmades and that requires grape leaves that are brined. Are you planning on saving them? I'm already commenting on this as you're trimming the grape please. I'm having my way to the end. I'm too eager so maybe you will answer that but I don't want to lose that train of thought. Great. Please are so wonderful.

I absolutely loved this video! 💘 Questions: do you fertilize your berries & grapes? And if so, how, when, and with what since you have landscape fabric down? Also, I have a grapevine along my farm fence, didn't realize the weight but hoping pruning & posts will help. They have fruited & ripened very dark this year but the hundreds of clusters are tiny like peas. Is that normal? I think they're concords. Loving you guys since the big C year, keep on keeping on❤

Look into grapes from the world of wine making or viners. In the world of wine making therenis a premium put on grapes that make it to the first frost or so; it changes the sugar structure and sweetness. Old school Concorde grapes and grape juice (juice, not wine unless something happened to the seal) makers also swore by the grapes that could make it to first frost. - I have no idea how expensive they are, do know some are much less costly than others, but you might want to check into the sugar testers for grapes still on the vine.
Can you please tell me where you got your original large red cherry seeds? I tried them this year and like you I got small tomatoes that cracked bad. I have learned so much from y’all. I have grown ajvarski peppers for 3 years now. Also emerald giants. And ozark red peppers. Thank you!!

I would like to ask you a question. Why would you get seedless grapes? I thought the idea was to grow for the future? Would it not be better to plant seeded grapes so that you can use the seeds to grow more in the future or to give to other people so that they can grow for their futures? I have watched you now for many years and you have helped me to do things in a workable way that I could afford. Thank you for all you do. Blessings to you and all yours.

We are Empty nesters and I actually don’t have farm animals But I have a large garden .. having a garden is a lot of work. It’s in itself but I enjoy it. I tried to figure out what task I’m going to do. I have a front yard garden and a backyard and it’s pretty big in the back and I’m in the process of making two more beds, but my grandbaby that’s two years old is always with me in the back and she loves it hoping that she’ll get that from me.. we’ve been eating a lot that we grow. I got a lot of melons coming and we went through potatoes already. We do the asparagus yard long green beans, cucumbers I can 29 cans of pickles. I am really busy and I do my own preserves as much as I can I’m planning trees to give me fruit. I have a pear tree for 20 years and I get about 200 pounds. Could you not a fruit from that and I process a lot of it into preserves jelly and jam.. I just planted my onions and also all the cold collards cabbage all kinds of stuff. I have peppers like crazy and I freeze a lot of them but I cook with a lot of peppers so it’s coming along. I enjoy it. Keep me busy if I’m at home, we are gonna be going on a trip Husband.,just to get away
