I first herad this song in 1973. I moved to St. Louis when I was 18 and moved in with my sister and boyfriend. I would hear this song on KSHE every night when sleeping on the couch cushions on the floor. Always brings back memories. Those were great days with great music.

My sister bought this album when it came out. I can still remember being 16, nobody home on Friday night but me...sitting in my room with my black light illuminating my posters, patchouli incense burning, smoking cheap seedy pot from a brass and wooden pipe, listening to this record. This song blew me away. Definitely my favorite Traffic song. I still listen to it full blast in my truck, and I have a kick ass system. Instrumentally, it's pure genius. Traffic definitely WAY underrated and should be introduced to young music lovers. My daughter is turning 16...bought her a stereo and turntable for her room. Looking for a pristine copy of this album for her.

Checking this out again because the same thing is happening to the Thornborough Henges, they're on national news, people who had never heard of them will now visit, soon they will be fenced off like Stonehenge. I used to go to Stonehenge the same time as Rollright, no fences, you could be alone and touch them, be a part of them....

Saw traffic in NYC in the fall of 74 playing as a scaled-down 4-person group: Winwood: guitar & keyboards/ Capaldi: drum set/ Wood: flute.sax, organ/ Roscoe Gee: bass. Wood was horribly, slobbering, falling down drunk. Pretty much sat out the second half of the show. Winwood kicked it up and put in a fantastic show. This is up there with their best. Went to England and found this charming stone circle. Unlike stonehenge, you can get up, walk around, touch, sit among these stones.

Completely agree with your review. But one question. Why "Roll Right Stones", rather than "Rollright Stones"? The reason I ask is I was on a cycling holiday in the Cotswolds in the late Seventies, and saw a sign to the "Rollright Stones", just outside Great Rollright. And I visited the stones, mid-week, with the light fading. OK, perhaps Steve and Jim weren't pedants. It's allowed, if your day job is 'brilliant musician".

Most under rated album and band. So influential, yet they never achieved the commercial success of their peers, which in a way is a good thing.
Look at the length of this song for instance. Can you imagine having that kind of artistic freedom today, I can't. The title cut rocks as"Evening Blue" is melancholia at it's best and "Sometimes I feel So Uninspired" is pure magic.
Great follow up to "Low Spark". I saw the tour at the Academy of Music in NYC with Free and John Martyn opening up for them, they played this whole album.
You wouldn't see that nowadays. Bands wouldn't risk it and would only play a few new songs and stick with songs that people are familiar with.

Traffic was a FORCE back in the day. Sadly they are largely unknown by the kids today. This is a great album, but not a massive commercial success. Today's audience needs to hear more of these guys. When I play it for my guitar & piano students, they are blown away ! Steve Winwood an astounding musician who is universally respected by his peers. Go back & check out the piano solo on "Empty Pages". WTF!!!!

Richard Jean traffic is so underrated. I'm still discovering new great stuff by then "walking in the wind" and "dream gerrard" are my latest discoveries of theirs.
But yes they are almost criminally underrated. Musicians always love and appreciate them though.

'Til I find out, where will I go, where will I go
    I don't know, I don't know,
    I don't know where
The space is between my eyes
    Open up the heavenly skies
    Death awaits with pearly gates
    Those who've been mesmerized
Many years has come and gone
Went to see a standing stone
    Some in circles, some alone
    Ancient, worn and weather torn
They chill me to the very bone
Many of these can be seen
In quiet places, fields of green
Of hedgerow lanes with countless names
But the only thing that remains are the roll right stones
    [Chorus:]
    Space age before my eyes
    Opening up the skies
Devil waits at the pearly gates
For those wh have been mesmerized
Many a years has come and gone
    But progress marches slowly on
In nature's paint, she hides the stain
    Cause everybody is going insane
The only, the only thing that will sustain are the roll right stones
    Roll right stones (7X)
    [Chorus]
'Til I find out, where will I go, where will I go
    I don't know, I don't know,
    I don't know where
The space is between my eyes
    Open up the heavenly skies
    Death awaits with pearly gates
    Those who've been mesmerized
Many years has come and gone
Went to see an ancient mound
    People buried underground
    Long ago, will never know
What it was like to hear their sounds
Black crow, I know you've been here
You've see the sights of yesteryear
You steal the grain of the conquered plain
But the only thing that remains are the roll right stones
    [Chorus x2]

I was there for the Traffic reform tour in '94, at Manchester UK. A night of new faces, and glad to say some we all remember. Steve Winwood was joined by Jim Capaldi and Rosko Gee.
The band launched into "light up" and Jim, with customary tambourine in hand, hit the notes as sweetly as ever. Then he looked up, to what seemed to him like never ending rows of library assistants and accountants. I can still see his face now, but we were rockin' Jim, but somewhere at the back of the stalls.

The Rollright Stones are a neolithic ring near where I grew up. In fact near where Steve Winwood still lives... just 30-40 [?] standing stones off in 'some field' off a rural lane. It's not unusual if you go and there is no one else there.... and there used to be 'an honesty box' to put 10 or 20p in for the circles upkeep... Perhaps that's a thing, the circle is 'just there', not some mega $-attraction.... just there and known to the locals...

I remember back when I was single, I had a huge record collection. I was trying to make it with a girl I had just met and trying to think of what would be good "make out" music to put on. Being a hardcore Traffic fan then, I put this song on. For over 14 minutes, I paid more attention to the music than I did to her, singing along. (This is an awesome sing along tune.) She was more baffled than turned on. She couldn't understand what I loved about this song.
Oh well. I eventually scored anyway!

Now that is a good story, Roll Right Stones is uptempo, and very tasty in it's instrumentation. Steve Winwood's Organ has a great groove. 14 Minutes long and does not wear out it's welcome. Now not to sound sexist because someone else said this to me. He said Woman generally do not have as good of taste in music as Men do.

I haven't been for a while, only checked this out just now because of a news item about a new book about 'Agent Sonya' who lived and operated her subterfuge in Gt. Rollright. Dismayed at reading you now have to pay to visit the Stones I looked on Google street to find worse, there's now a long layby to park in. The Stones for me were a quiet relatively unknown place back in the early 70's, somewhere to go and get stoned and communicate with the past. Another indication that there are too many humans on this planet is the huge car park and cafe/visitor centre at Goodrich Castle instead of the narrow steeply banked lane to park in with the long single track through the woods to get to it. Another crime is the paved footpath up to the top of British Camp. All places Jim and Steve knew well back then.

Under rated - commercial success - here we go again. During that time those two things were anathema to the movement afoot. Only late comers to thinking like the Beatles and Rolling Stones thought about their place on the establishment's chart. Traffic is a name spoken with reverence - that is the peak of respect. Success was what you got onto tape in relation to what you wanted to get onto tape. The money was the problem and still IS the problem. The kind of rating and success spoken about this way is an insult to the artists involved. Try and keep up. It was hard enough at the time.

The words to this song really apply to today. Big time God reference. " Devil waits at pearly gates for those who have been mesmerized" "The only thing that will remain are the Roll Right Stones " Come on, wake up..

      Death awaits with pearly gates
      For those who've been mesmerized
      Death... Not Devil.

Always gotta be some wanker trying to push their imaginary friend on us. This song is about ancient standing stones in England and has nothing to do with any gods.

This is a better tune than Low Spark, imho. And that is with no disrespect to Lowspark.

You are a very bad person. Both are fabulous tracks. I just can't decide which I prefer.
