    As a newish knitter who makes my own designs in crochet, I have to understand pattern construction to knit to completion. Thank you so much for mentioning the 4x increases which make the narrow and shallow shawl shape I prefer. Peace and Blessings 🧶🌻😊

    I have knitted the Hitchhicker so many time! I’ve knitted this pattern in different yarn weights and in different types of yarns. This is my go to pattern, when I want something easy.

      Yes! Great pattern! I knit it once just like the pattern says and once adding rows of eyelets. My favorite kind of pattern-looks fancy, but is actually pretty easy!

    A favorite design is a freebie online called Weaver's Wool Mini-Shawl. I have made dozens over the years. Garter stitch with increases across the body and at the edges. Can be used for any size yarn by adjusting needle size to fit the yarn choice.

    I am addicted to the Kari Shawl! The basic pattern is memorized quickly, then you can have fun with different yarns, color ways and needle sizes!

    I loved knitting the Appalachian shawl by Laura Aylor so much that I'm knitting a second one in a different color palette. I wanted to use up some old Patons Decor (worsted acrylic-wool blend) in shades of brown and another in shades of blue. I couldn't put the shawls down and knit them up within a week each. I picked 3 other solid colors to go with this yarn with the same weight and fiber content. Another one I'm currently knitting is Range by Andrea Mowry that uses different colors and stitch patterns (including some brioche sections) and is lovely to knit as well. An easy free pattern that I knit for spring in DK cotton yarn is Pirates Cove by Hillary Latimer. Two fingering weight patterns I enjoyed knitting are Usonian by Dee O'Keefe, and Mustang Island by Martha Wissing.

    One wrap/shawl that is incredibly popular, free pattern, and uses Linen Quill yarn from Purl Soho is the Half + Half Triangles Wrap. This is great for beginners and is definitely TV knitting. The Linen Quill yarn is exquisite and improves with each washing.

    The Hiraeth Shawl, from Flossi is wonderful! I have Swing Revival, from Susanna Winter on my list, and Marin from Ysolda is getting cast on in the next couple of days (as soon as I get a little closer to finishing a linen top I'm working on )! Thank you for this, even though I am seeing it nearly a year after you posted it. I would love to hear more about short row shawls like Swing Revival, Aeria, Eyes on U, etc.

    That was fun! My first shawl was Melanie Berg’s Drachenfels with a kit from Craftsy! I love all of her designs. I’ve made Stephen West’s Boneyard from some thrifted worsted weight yarn, and it’s my go-to everyday shawl for early morning or evening chill. You touched on so many of my favorite designers. Romi Hill and Casapinka also have some beautiful designs.

      I also wanted to mention that Benjamin Matthews, who designed the Cityscape, is no longer with Red Heart but is out on his own. He has some really great hat patterns that are simple stitch patterns arranged in imaginative ways.

    Thank you for the great reviews of shawls...it can be frustrating on Ravelry looking through so many patterns for a stash buster. UGH, Your website helps so much, and thanks to other knitters for their favorites. Now I have a list too!
    A question...stYo ( written by another person as was st+YO ) in a summer top I just frogged back which wasn't explained very well by the designer and couldn't find video help . What purpose does that stYO serve unlike a short row to turn work ? Is there a substitute?

    • @NerdyKnitting
      @NerdyKnitting  2 года назад

      I found this - knitterskitchen.com/2018/02/20/tutorial-how-to-work-a-styo/
      I only looked quickly but it looks like just another way to create a short row. I'd just use the method you like instead (as long as it works well with the fabric you're creating).

      @@NerdyKnitting btw I wanted to let you know since my husband printed the milk run shawl pattern for me. It’s 11 pages. The designer Cat Wong lives in Canada and has put together not just one design but variations and walks you through all sorts of ways to customize the shawl. Even suggesting ways to reduce the amount of yarn used if you’re limited. This lady really put a lot of thought into it. Oh and three ruffle variations to choose from.
      Just wanted you to know as I find her thoroughness and giving nature to be so lovely. 😊❤️
