I always appreciate when you do these mini lore-style video about SM64's techniques that might not be so obvious for the audience. Also a good, fun way to document these things. Keep them coming!
Wow..I found speed kicking on my own around the same time the speed running community did, in 2014. There were a lot of good romhacks releasing, and throughout gameplay, I kept getting weirdly long kicks while trying to start a triple jump chain..I realized that by holding a little away from neutral it was possible to conserve a lot of speed. I love how every time I play sm64, there's something new to learn about it's movement. I know so much about sm64 these days that it's hard to imagine anything new, but it's always something I've never considered before that surprises me.
Siglemic is the GOAT of sm64, nobody can change my mind. His times might not be the best anymore, but his talent was undeniable and his streams were an unforgettable experience. It'll never be 2012-2014
I love how one bit of knowledge turned speedkicks from a risky way to save tiny bits of time to a spacing technique that made a lot of strategies safer. It's like it turned from trick to tool.
Thanks for explaining this, Simply. It shows how complex it is and how much further is still to go. Imagine watching a runner essentially doing a TAS for WR with frontflips.
How many people do you know in real life that get tens of thousands of views on every video they upload to RUclips? How many people do you know in real life that get fewer than tens of thousands of views on every video they upload to RUclips? How many people do you know in real life that have never uploaded a single video to RUclips? How many of them actually exist, and for those that don't exist, what are any of them supposed to do to be able to actually exist?
This is the first time I've seen someone using frame interpolation right! Adding to the Viewer experience with slow motion shots, great job simply and oknem ;)!!
I appreciate this Simply. I got into 16 star 1.5 years ago and I haven't even attempted to mess around with speedkicks. It's nice to see it broken down like this. Holding neutral at the perfect time felt too punishing but knowing you can use ESS. I may need to play around with it a bit.
I feel like this is something that may have happened to a lot of people before it's discovery but they might not have even noticed that something weird happened and just carried on like nothing happened.
really cool video, we need more videos that discuss the mechanics of this game, like ive been playing for around a year and not once has anyone told me you can speedkick with ess instead of neutral
i started doing 16 star for fun during lockdowns, and i can already do cool dw runs with the early speed kick. happy im a patient guy, who likes to learn new mechanics.
Growing up me and my friends would do this all the time. I don't even understand how this wasn't used in speed running for so long. We didn't even do it for the purpose of speed running, just because doing the kick was fun to do.
Was surprised to hear the direction changing on sideflips isn't popular, although to be fair I play casually on keyboard (with emulator obv) so it's probably WAY easier for me. I assume with an actual analog stick it's tough to get consistently.
This is just a test reply. Am currently experimenting for a way to use my inbox(or make some kind of psudo inbox)on my tablet WITHOUT having to resort to using the add infested RUclips app(lol).
I have a feeling new techniques will keep being discovered. Sure Mario 64 and it's code have been thoroughly documented, but there's always a chance to find new tricks,
Fwiw, I remember watching a stream a while back of Weegee doing frontflips relatively on demand practicing ultra fast owless movement or something. It’s comin’ 🤠
I am probably one of those unsuspecting players whose movements look like a TAS and I manage to do certain movements like chaining multiple frame perfect slide kicks to go faster than 53 units/sec.
Nice speedrunning book report, nerd. I'm just joshing you, I enjoyed your video. But more importantly, I hit the thumbs up and shared it with my friends.
it will not. Even for the 2d games, SMB1 is a special case among them where a combination of framerules + very simple movement rules makes it possible to be frame perfect. SMB3 for instance has so many tiny optimizations that frame perfection will never happen. SM64 is so much harder than even that because perfect movement also requires stick angle + magnitude perfection in so many ways. The vast majority of single stars records don't even match TAS yet, let alone entire runs.
Sry for such a weird comment, but i think i found a route change in super mario 64 120 star, that's faster. I don't find the video of the Person, who had the idea. If you do LBLJ to Bowser 1, SBLJ to Bowser 2 and than BLJ through that one door to the upper Floor, you can do RR with Carpetless, TTC, CLOUD first, than Exit Course to get back to Basement and do the Run like usually. Someone calculated that if you do it that way, you save 1 min and 30 seconds, if i remember correctly. You already do the start of that in 0 and 1 Star Runs. I write here, cause you know more than me Simply and you are better at finding these videos. That was calculated with carpetless TAS only, before the viable carpetless strat was found.
Frontflips are quite consistent if you wait half a second until Mario starts moving in the other direction. That would of course make the move not worth it in most speedrun situations
I, as a keyboard emulator SM64 speedrunner, can say that front flips are so much easier on keyboard. Speedkicks are harder because keyboard usually can't use ESS pos.
I don’t think it was technically discovered in 2010. I sorta learned about releasing the joystick during my jumps to perform a super jump, and to get into Bowser the fancy way (no stairs). My older cousins friend liked to show off, he was also part of a game club thing he had me believing were all elite gamers. He taught me a lot of neat stuff, and quirks. Edit: speed runners need to find mega nerds from the day and to get them to play showing off recording them.
I always appreciate when you do these mini lore-style video about SM64's techniques that might not be so obvious for the audience. Also a good, fun way to document these things. Keep them coming!
This is absolutely right. Simply, you are a man of the people
where can i find other ones like these he's made?
2:56 i was not ready for the footage to hit thirty billion frames per second
Shoutout to Simpleflips for being semi consistent with forward side-flips
They seem like such simple flips...
Simpleflips ahead of his time with the forward sideflip
Shoutouts to simpleflips’ frontflips

I remember simpleflips doing forward sideflips a lot in old videos

Hearing simply speak is uncanny. You can tell he knows he doesn't exist yet continues to talk without even cracking a smirk.

More of this stuff. Your SSL reds video is honestly what got me into following SM64, and speed running in general.
thanks for the quick history lesson! I don't know how you got old Siglemic footage to play so fluidly in slo-mo, but that looked amazing!
This is the first time I've seen someone using frame interpolation right! Adding to the Viewer experience with slow motion shots, great job simply and oknem ;)!!
Shoutouts to oknem the editor
Oh that's how the gameplay looked like it was 60 fps. That threw me off
it looks bad imo
i like how you explained the technique very early into the video and i liked the concise nature and the editing, very nice
these are by far your most valuable kinds of videos. i dont see coverage of SM64 like this anywhere else. MOREMOREMORE
It finally happened
Simply made his own content
Appreciate the video. I miss the videos you did years ago that covered speedrun tech, route development and history of SM64 speed running.
Cool vid. It would be cool to see a video for C-Up slide as well - it's really funny to me how a camera input can somehow be used for movement lol.
I appreciate this Simply. I got into 16 star 1.5 years ago and I haven't even attempted to mess around with speedkicks. It's nice to see it broken down like this. Holding neutral at the perfect time felt too punishing but knowing you can use ESS. I may need to play around with it a bit.
can you explain to me what "neutral" is?
@@bryanjordan8876 Neutral is the dead center. Neutral means the stick isn't moving at all in any direction.
I really like seeing Simply´s documentaries related to stuff, pretty cool.
Oknem really used every song in the MK8DX ost in this vid huh
LMAO
@@ariadvance no shroom ridge or sky garden, bad video tbh
These are my fav vids from you big simp - These dives into the lore of the tricks that are used today are brilliant
Wonderful video, love this type of history on the move sets.
so if backwards long-jumping was mentioned in a strategy guide all yhe way back in 1996, wouldnt it be considered a mechanic instead?
I was distracted by the cute doge portrait the whole time.
I feel like this is something that may have happened to a lot of people before it's discovery but they might not have even noticed that something weird happened and just carried on like nothing happened.
Make sure you HOLD neutral KEKW
Did you add increase the framerate in order to get the slow-mo to be smooth? If so nice touch oknem, makes it look so much better
really cool video, we need more videos that discuss the mechanics of this game, like ive been playing for around a year and not once has anyone told me you can speedkick with ess instead of neutral
Love these "history of techniques" videos!!
i started doing 16 star for fun during lockdowns, and i can already do cool dw runs with
the early speed kick. happy im a patient guy, who likes to learn new mechanics.
The community was in remiss. There had never been a kick as speedy as this
awesome, i never knew too much about this, but its truly fascinating! thanks, Simpmaster
Love those video essays. Great content!
I thought the thumbnail said kendrick and thought we found a kendrick Lamar new speed tech. very cool
Growing up me and my friends would do this all the time. I don't even understand how this wasn't used in speed running for so long. We didn't even do it for the purpose of speed running, just because doing the kick was fun to do.
this is so interesting, amazing to watch
I use to do them for fun as a kid. Didn't realize it was a technique
0:43 it's called a "body slide attack"
During the first few seconds I thought, "Wait, Dyrus speedruns Mario 64 now?"
I love how speed running communities always find a game to just go faster and or break the game it's very fascinating
In hindsight the ESS speedkick makes so much sense
That was entertaining and informative. Nice video!
Was surprised to hear the direction changing on sideflips isn't popular, although to be fair I play casually on keyboard (with emulator obv) so it's probably WAY easier for me. I assume with an actual analog stick it's tough to get consistently.
Hank Hill: "I'm gonna speedkick your ass"
We need more speedrunning lore
Great video my guy
Nice video. The forward side flip bit at the end is very interesting. Have we overlooked a doable and important strat?
Nice touch with the F-Zero music.
One of, if not my favorite move in SM64. It's always satisfying to get one :)
2:37 how are those frames so smooth? I would have assumed twixtor but it looks way too good, need his settings asap!
The frame interpolation is nice damn nice job
Very insightful as always 🥰
These are my favourite videos of yours
The p sound pops when simply says possible @4:25

the frame interpolation is evil

I like that you have Euler’s “e” framed ❤
shoutout to the chair
5:12 - 5:20 that was a clean edit
Nice speedrunning book report, nerd.
I'm just joshing you, I enjoyed your video. But more importantly, I hit the thumbs up and shared it with my friends.
Masterclass level thumbnail
'just groping on the chair' lol'd irl
Insightful and entertaining!
Dude, you mentioned SIglemic, I remember starting to like speedruns because of his runs at AGDQ/SGDQ 2013
6:16 Arm Chair code for something?!
sunshine airport music is fire
Can you do camera work/ lag reduction next? Great vid as always
Came across this trying to get a better roundhouse kick
Well it would make sense that the backward long jump glitch was known in 1996 for the rumble edition to have removed it.
The thunbnail didnt load for me i just guessed itll be about speedkicks
Write it down ukikipedia
this was a cool watch
Another actually good video that convinces me SImply is smarter than he lets on for some reason.
Great video. Really like this kind of content.
Sm64sr evolves 🤘 makes me wonder if sm64 will ever get a frame perfect record like the classic 2d games have
it will not. Even for the 2d games, SMB1 is a special case among them where a combination of framerules + very simple movement rules makes it possible to be frame perfect. I suck at videogames so I watch your videos too see what elite looks like 😂💯
0:01 best part of the video fr
Are you okay
Great vid, speedkicking is very satisfying also 😊

Music?
I knew nothing about any of this before this video. Also first time seeing a front flip.
Another great video!
Great video big simp
So that's how you do that. I'll try that after I get my first bombclip
Frontflips are quite consistent if you wait half a second until Mario starts moving in the other direction. That would of course make the move not worth it in most speedrun situations

I don't play sm64 at all, but I'm going to practice only front flips so I'm ahead of the curve when that is meta
6:01 I can literally do this very consistently and I’m not even good at the game
Bro thinks he’s summoning salt
4:14 wouldnt a slower speedkick just be called a kick? 🤔🤔🤔
