A lot of the stuff you saw first in Space Babies originated here. The phone upgrade, the psychic paper, and of course, the concept of The Doctor being the last of his kind.
Obviously, the show has been going since 1963, but the show was off air between 1989 and 2005, apart from one special.
The last of the Time Lords concept was brand new for the revived series, so you are experiencing the mystery of all this fresh, now.

You know, there were a lot of theories about Rose being Ruby's Mother simply because they were both blonde and the timeline sort of matched. Ruby born Christmas 2004, and Rose starting her travels in 2005. Obviously that didn't happen but its crazy that even the revived show has gone on long enough for a companion to be born at the start of its run and be old enough to join the Doctor now.

It is wild going back to Eccleson after Ncuti as the 15th Doctor is so emotionally available and open with Ruby whereas the 9th here is still full of trauma and has difficulty being open. Yeah there were a lot of call backs in Space Babies to this episode (the same phone thing happens in both).
Another fantastic reaction and it is really good knowing that someone who started with Ncuti not only liked it enough to go back but is also enjoying the older stuff.

Yeah, the main difference being that the phone scene was robbed of all its dramatic weight so instead of it being a huge ethical quandary for Rose to talk to her dead of five billion years mother, Ruby just smiles and giggles without ever questioning it. @@HuntingViolets When was that in doubt for Rose? Moreover, when did Ruby bring that up? 😂
And yes, it is absolutely a downgrade. Having a different reaction is fine, preferable even, but having no reaction and just casually accepting everything that comes her way? That’s not interesting, that’s just lazy character writing. You can have Ruby be more into it, but that needs to be rooted in three dimensional characterisation, like there’s something on earth she’s trying to escape. But Ruby isn’t, she had a great life and no reason to leave as there was so much tethering her to earth, like Rose. But whereas Rose has the shock of realising she threw her perfectly fine life away for basically no reason, Ruby has no such realisation.
So if you’re going to give them similar backgrounds, you need to give them similar reactions to things as well, because the contrasts between them are so stark as to be unavoidable.

    • @HuntingViolets

@@Longshanks1690 I'm just saying different people have different reactions, and one isn't necessarily better or worse. Even people of similar backgrounds. This episode had a lot to establish, being the first trip of a completely new era, so I think the fairly simple plot was a good choice. It also had interpersonal dynamics to set up, a bit of lore, and a lot of huge ideas for both Rose and the audience to think about. Not to mention all the cool visuals. The more clever and convoluted plots are yet to come, but this early it might have been too much.

Ruby and Rose are separate characters. Space Babies and End of the World are separate stories. When Rose first travels with the doctor, he takes her to see her planet get torched, while when Ruby first travels with the doctor he takes her to save a bunch of babies from death. Not to mention Rose is a sheltered person who's live in the same council flat her entire life, she works a low wage retail job and is dating her childhood boyfriend. Ruby, by comparison, has lived a much fuller life.

The highly emotional musical theme that plays over the last couple of scenes of this episode is composer Murray Gold's theme for Rose. Gold has returned to the show for the Gatwa era; Ruby's theme is the piece she plays on the piano on the roof in "The Devil's Chord."

Lady Cassandra was voiced by the American actress Zoë Wannamaker and maybe you saw her in the first Harry Potter film as Madame Hooch, but she's also been in a lot of English series and films, I always assumed she was from Great Britain, but apparently not.
As for all the questions you've got for the Doctor, it will be explained but not everything in one go, they feed you that information as the story goes, but it will take you a while to get there, but what a ride that is.

We all can agree that this was probably the worst idea for a date ever 😂
This doctor, Nine, is quite traumatized (as stated, he lost his own planet recently) and I think he wanted Rose to understand that pain and perspective. Though, it is still messed up to show someone the death of their planet!

I would say that the series starts not long after the Last Great Time War. The Doctor reacting to his own face in the mirror in the first episode implies as much. Nothing definitive, but it couldn't be more than a few weeks for the Doctor.

This episode tends to get overlooked, but I love it. Still some flaws, but they're more than counterbalanced by the rest, and I've always loved the emotional beats of the last few minutes.
Nobody knew it at the time, but two seeds were planted in this episode for the season arc. I didn't even notice one myself until watching a video just a few years ago that highlighted one!

This episode was filmed in The Welsh National Temple of Peace and Health, known as the Temple of Peace and Health or commonly the Temple of Peace, is a non-religious civic building in Cathays Park, Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. It was designed by the architect Sir Percy Thomas. Since its foundation, the building has served a dual function as headquarters for health and international affairs organisations. Look it up on the net, its a cool building.

i will warn that this is NOT spoilers, but merely a warning that NuWho absolutely loves placing in easter eggs for arcs and little things like that, and i really hope you notice them. Also, Christopher is known as a dark doctor, coming straight after the mentioned Time War and trust me darkness WILL show itself in the episodes coming up.
I will also now mention something ralated to Gallifrey and the Doctor coming back to save it, it is NOT spoilers but someone might want to remain in the dark. as mentioned by none other than a timelord in a Classic Who story, the first rule of time travel is that you can't co back on your own time stream (the print in time that any individual leaves) and more importantly, mentioned in future stories too, there are certain events called Fixed Points in Time, thus they must happen regardless of what any time traveler wants to do. in any case, more of the time war will be explained overtime.
Finally, if I may make a slight suggestion, as you mentioned wanting to watch some Classic Who stories, the first ever aired story (1963 - Season 1 Espiode 1to4 - An Unearthly Child + The Cave Of Skulls + The Forest Of Fear + The Firemaker) may have been removed (taken down by the son of the original owner if I remember correctly) but I belive it can still be found, and even if it may be outdated and quite slow, William Hartnell (the 1st doctor) is sometimes overlooked and I really hope you can view it eventually.
thank you, and good luck with the next travel
