I had a ton of these when I was a kid, including the power city set. The power city had a large cogged rubber belt that pulled the train along via those small tabs. I wouldn't be surprised to find most, if not all existing example's belts dry rotted and inoperable. It was also pretty noisy when operating, and you could not use an sidings if the tabs were engaged. I also found the steam locos would not stay on the newer style track, the drivers did not fit well, despite, as I recall, one set being offered with the new track and the sound cattle car.

Great video! Very thorough. I've got most of what was make including the power train city. I didn't get them as a kid though, I got them as an adult. I'm a Z scale model railroader and converted many of the cars for Z scale trains, like some of the passenger cars, tank car, ore hopper, covered hopper and 40' boxcar. The "baggage car" is actually a railway post office car, and the bi-level cars aren't SuperLiners but actually the pre-Amtrak Santa Fe Hi-Level cars.
I've heard an unconfirmed rumor that these micromachines train were designed by the guy who went on to become the Design Engineer for Micro Trains Line (MTL) N and Z scale model trains.

Admittedly the XTS were pretty badly beaten, but I loved those toys and I do miss them. If only kid me knew how to treat things the way adult me does.
I used to have one of my GeoTrax locomotives that was missing and didn't leave when the rest of the stuff got sold on eBay, but I don't know if it's still around, haven't seen it in years. Somewhere I still have what's left of a few XTS trains I didn't manage to destroy or have to say goodbye to.

Literally one of my earliest childhood memories (I think I was 3 or 4) is playing with some of these trains. I had two of the steam train ones (one with a black locomotive, the other being the one with the sound boxcar and the blue loco), the TGV set, and two of the silver Santa Fe freight ones (with the orange livestock car, yellow boxcar, and green hopper car). One of the freight trains came with the motorized playset thing. I absolutely loved these trains and played with them until some of them broke (sadly the rest ended up sold in a yard sale or something, I don't remember). Trackwise I never had the switches but I knew they existed, and I had some of both track types. Thanks for the reminder of simpler times!

  • @leverettrailfan5414

I've had the red & silver F-unit since I was a little kid... no clue where I got it. Me and my siblings had a bunch of used micro machines cars too (and we still have a bunch of them- not the playsets we got them with though, rip) but I never made the connection they were related. I remember the kindergarten I went to had the blue & white passenger set, and it had the track too! Except that one curve was missing. Drove me mad. I wished I had a whole train for my little engine.
maybe 10 years ago at a train show I found a small bag of some random MircoMachines trains for cheap- I could tell they were the same product line as my little childhood loco. Naturally, I bought em! The baggage car and non-observation superliner in blue & white, the green tank car, the stock car with sound, the blue steam engine (missing the front axle, no tender), and both caboose types (both in red livery). None of them have couplers except my original childhood F unit, it wasn't until this video I learned how exactly the coupler system even worked.
I'd love to own all the trains one day, I'm a big fan of their charming designs, and I guess they remind me of my childhood (even if the MicroMachines I grew up with were all hand-me-downs, and I only actually owned one engine).

This makes me think that micro machines took the tooling from Bachman's n scale trains The fact that the 4-4-0 Looks very similar to their N scale one saying with the coaches

    • @Waty8413
      @Waty8413 Год назад

They certainly ripped off Bachmans train set ideas, just look at the old time prototype photo in the video. THe loco and the cars are all ones bachmann had in N and HO, however having owned both the MM and Bachmann trains, there is absolutely no shared tooling. N scale is giant compared to the micro machines and detail is better for the N scale trains in every regard.

Hi, I really enjoyed watching this because yes, I grew up with micro machines and was in the mid of the hype. Coming from Germany, we often had a mixed bag in the EU to where what was sold to? I only saw the power layout in the magazines but not in stores. I only had the Rio Grande and would have loved to buy the Steamengine back then. But for some reason I could never find it. The TGV on the other hand was easy to find and I guess they thought we were less into the american trains, so we got tons of TGVs. I still have my Rio Grande and in some box also a small trainstation that could fit the tracks. So yes, thanks for the video and seeing all the trains in action again.

Dang, was this a great video. The intro was unhinged and hilarious.
I had my eye on Cannonball #9 for a long time and my local retro toy store had an unboxed one. I rushed out and got it and I am happy that I did. It has a lot of the same issues that you brought up in your video, like derailing, but I love it anyway. I only have 2 straight track and I guess I didn’t know it was supposed to come with 4. I’ll have to track down some more… well track.
Thanks for showing that the couplers detach. I didn’t know that was something you could do. I wonder how difficult it would be to CAD model and 3D print some new ones. Maybe knuckle couplers that you can put magnets into? Maybe I’ll try playing around with that. Come to think of it, I’ll bet 3D printed track would work too.
That was a bit of a ramble, but again thanks for the great video. Super informative and fun.

I have three of the engines with only two tenders, five tank cars, and two complete caboose with a third in need of a truck and all 4 axels, and have been building my own set of tracks out of popsicle sticks to display them on, these would be huge in a world where a single powered engine goes for $400+ and each car runs at a higher price than I paid for a complete set of the engine, tender, tank car, and caboose.

As a Transformers fan, Hasbro producing any kind of train set would be a great thing... yet implausible at the best of times. They wrote off one of the best Transformers Combiner teams, saying they will never tackle Bullet Trains again because of poor sales in 2001.
Japanese partner company Takara making HO scaled Transformers Masterpiece trains is probably a fluke, since those are poorly designed with loads of fragile translucent plastic for key structural parts.
Looking at this, I fear they will not touch Micro Machines trains in any large capacity in the near future.
The only train they will most likely sell is Astrotrain, one that also turns into a space shuttle.

Looks like I dodged a cannon shell there, by not buying any (I bought some Mega Force toys instead). I do NOT like trains with the rails INSIDE the wheels.
