  • And be sure to follow-up this Follow-Up with "Get more sounds out of your Roland Drum Module (without buying extra triggers)!" , which is here:
    • Get more sounds out of...
    I fixed a glitch or two in an earlier version of this vid (thanks for your comments ...even the crappy ones, Bobby!) and reloaded this one.
    Again; this UPDATED video is a follow-up regarding some of the questions I received about my first Roland video entitled "To TD-50, or to not TD-50?" which is here:
    • To TD-50, or to not TD...
    Thanks again!

    Man....that one statement summed up the entirety of these two videos and everything else I've seen. "I'm a drummer; not a programmer!" That's hitting the nail on the head. wtH are they thinkin' over there?!?

      @RichardBonaduce  4 года назад +1

      Yeah! I'll admit that in the hands of other folks (with more programming experience, money and patience, and time than I have!) the TD-50 is impressive. For the rest of us, the TD-30 is just fine!

      @@RichardBonaduce Yeah....I feel they really narrowed their market with the 50. Soooooo many who can REALLY PLAY and have the money for a nice virtual setup neither have the head FOR nor experience WITH doing all the modification work to what's there to get what they want. All those options, in my opinion, need to be there and ready to simply select and GO n not have to do anything more than a couple minor tweaks. All this having to build what you want from templates? Yeah....I don't know man...... MANY People are just simply NOT going to go into it that deeply. What they WILL do instead, is throw their hands up and say "screw it" and further give digital drums a undue bad wrap. And, besides, like you said: You're NOT going to magically change a maple snare to a titanium snare. And, if you could, who the heck wants to go thru all that? Well, like I said at the beginning: A narrow market. I think the 30 is going to be the best around for another generation or two until they have some revelations over there at Roland.
      I rode the 20x for quite a while. Live gigged the heck out of it on a Hart Pro trigger kit. LOVED it. I want to upgrade to be more inline with the DAW stuff I'm doing and decided the 50 wasn't for me and that the 30 is perfect. :-) I'm about to throw down on the 30 and man am I stoked. And all this deSPITE the fact I AM a tech head. I love diving in and man I can understand and get around in this stuff and achieve what I want but man, I want a more diverse set of starting points. I do NOT want to have to create everything from scratch. Give me a bunch of stuff that's already somewhat ready to go right out of the box. Really floors me that they dumped all of the out-of-the-box options with regard to instrument types, sizes, characteristics, materials, etc. and that now all the acoustic kits have this "sameness" goin' on. That just....I don't know man..... makes no sense to me. People want easy. Roland givin' them too damn much work to do. I wanna PLAY not edit parameters all friggin' day.

      @@SomeDumUsrName And seriously checkout V EXpressions! Those folks do a lot of the work for you (and for a reasonable price) and you can still tweak them a little bit for there if you wish. I end up playing one of their kits over the on-board ones now almost 8 out of 10 times!

    I'm glad you did this video and agree with your basic premise. One thing you don't discuss is layering on the TD-50. That opens up a wealth of new options. Hey, you can still prefer the 30. I don't have either. Just doing my research and have concluded to wait for the next upgrade at this point.

    • @RichardBonaduce
      @RichardBonaduce  4 года назад +1

      Well, I didn't say the *word "layering," but that's exactly what I meant when I discussed *combining sounds to create other sounds. It certainly opens up possibilities, but I just don't think all that extra work is worth spending all that extra time and money... especially for the gigs I have! Literally, no one in the bar is going to notice the difference... but my wallet does!

  • @timd5714

    TD30 all the way Rich...I have a TD25 and although it's not in the same class as a TD50 or 30, you get all of the TD30 sounds. I like the simplicity of the TD25 and I love the sounds of the 25 of which are based around the 30. The snare sounds on the 30/25 seem a lot crisper and I feel the sounds on the snare on the 50 are more compact / condensed if that makes sense. I really do like the digital snare on the 50 though. Apart from that I'm happy to drum away on the TD25.

    Hi Richard! Thanks for two great reviews on the 50 vs the 30. Through lang term use you obviously know a lot there is to know on this subject. I own both 'brains' (and a smaller one of my own); I totally agree with you; the TD-30 is still my favourite. Also thanks for the nice tip on het second hihat. Have to disagree with you on the V Expressions issue: IMHO they bring out the best in these modules, so I think you should check them out. They spend a lot of time at these 'brains' so you don't have to. At about $1 per kit this is real value for money. This goes for both the TD-30 as the TD-50. I tried to program some kits myself but always end up playing the drums...

    • @RichardBonaduce
      @RichardBonaduce  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you for your comments, Ruud! And I *do agree with you... I have tried the V-Expressions and I do like them very much! I think they charge a reasonable price for what they do, and their stuff sounds great. My only complaint is that the kits are usually cranked to such a degree they're almost overmodulated? I find I have to tweak them down a bit when I use them. But other than that - they're great!

    Just curious after all this time if you tried the Digital snare, ride and hi hats ?
    I have the Td27 and only the digital snare so far, and I love it.
    I started on the TD17KVX and I just didn't like the snare, and when I upgraded to the digital snare, and had to get the Td27 module so it worked, it opened up the world to me.
    As soon as I get the money, I'm going to get the hi hat and ride.
    Just seeing if you changed your mind if you tried them...
    Get drumming !!!

    You know the td-30 snare drums for example, didn’t all respond the same way. Only the first few had the advanced sound modeling and response. While all the others were maybe just 4 layers deep really... so a lot of the Td-30 was filler anyway. And the EQ and transient goes a long way. After all that’s what different wood is about right.? Natural eq. Just saying. But yeah should be able to turn it on and sound great. But yeah if somebody puts their time into making all of those adjustments you know how long it takes so it shouldn’t be free. Besides now the same td-50 has 900 sounds and more capabilities. But yeah you gotta pay for it...

      Thanks for replying brah, I was talking about the whole kit although but just saw some on eBay for around $3500. I’ve played international shows etc and am Leaning towards the full kit look like the 506 but it’s the td27 module. I’ve read it’s pretty sweet bit then again maybe the older 30 is still a better purchase? I need pre made electronic shells if I buy the 30 module for $1200 and only found this European shop (drumtec) who sells them and shipping from Germany to Hawaii is ridiculou$!!!! I got about 5k to spend and want a kit with 4toms and more plenty cymbals brah. Do you trust buying used gear on EBay?

    Hi, I am a wannabe drummer...may I ask how you mounted your hi-hats? Are those Roland Vh-11 without the clutches and controllers? I like the idea of a remote hi hat without having to get the "remote contraption". Personally I don't mind having the hi hat not "moving/open/close".

    • @RichardBonaduce
      @RichardBonaduce  2 года назад +1

      Hi, and thanks for your question!
      It's actually a discontinued Roland item (still available used online - that's how I got them) called a CY12-H Hi-Hat. It is a single, solid molded cymbal in the shape of a set of closed hi-hats. Here is the official Roland page (That doesn't show it very well:
      www.roland.com/us/products/cy-12h/
      But if you just google "Roland cy12-h" you'll see many more, better images and used pricing.
      However, because this item is discontinued by Roland, their newer modules don't even have it listed in their trigger menus! So something like a pair of CY-5s would probably work better. I ended up trying multiple selections in their menus for the CY12-H, and one of the standard CY settings seem to work just fine with it.

    The td50 has 3 times the storage of the td30 yet reduced it's overall sounds from over 1,000 to 400!!
    This extra space has to be being used somewhere!! I can only assume it's going to higher quality sounds!!
    If u buy from Drumtec. They give you an extra 9 snare's as well!!
    I've never had an e kit before, but I don't need thousands of different sounds!!
    If I had to cope with say, just new beats in all sizes and K custom dark in all sizes. I'm pretty sure they would cover ANY situation!!
    I'm definitely going for the 50!! It's just newer and will give me more sounds than I can ever need!!

I haven't played either and you own both. I've since come across the VAD 506 that has the digi ride and snare and the TD27 seems to have squeezed in loads of different sounds. So again I'm guessing the 50 must have better quality sounds. How do you think quality compares between the 27 and 50?
      I've played drums for 40 years and now need an E kit. I'm much more concerned with sound quality over quantity!!

    Ahem - the TD-20KX and the TD-30KX also requires snare- and hi-hat stands. Just sayin...

    • @RichardBonaduce
      @RichardBonaduce  5 лет назад +3

      > Ahem < ...They do not. I've owned both, and I haven't used a stand for either of them in 10 years!
      Both sets have snare triggers/pads available that have brackets attached which allow the snare to be mounted to the cage... as I have in this video. But the digital snare that is used with the TD50 has no bracket, and therefore *requires a stand. Now you can use a non-digital snare trigger with the TD50, but... why? The digital snare/ride combo is half the point of the TD50.
      Meanwhile, the hi-hat triggers that have two pieces (like a top and bottom "cymbal") *do require a hi-hat stand... but the single-piece CY5 or the CY12H (which is what I'm using in the video) do not require a stand, and can be attached to a cage... as I have done in this video. In fact, I have two separate snare triggers and two separate hi-hat triggers... and not a single stand. Other than the bass drum sitting on the ground, everything is attached to the cage - even my overhead microphone!
