  • Part 3 of our ISOPODS NATURALLY series we basically apply all we've discussed thus far.
    Time to put my money where my mouth is!
    Today we setup not one but two nature inspired vivariums using all the products we harvested from nature.
    We discuss the benefits of such a setup, establishing the natural micro fauna that enables the environment to flourish.
    I hope you'll join me for the final instalment of our Can we do it better series and perhaps you'll walk away from it inspired to give it a try with one of your ISOPOD cultures.
    As always thank you very much for watching, sharing, commenting, liking etc.... Take care and Enjoy!

    Kick ass enclosure man, I think just about anything would thrive in that masterpiece 😂

      Thank you that’s very kind of you to say. The Merulanella are thriving however to keep the mosses going I would have to mist almost daily and the moisture level in the substrate builds up. So it may not be as pretty as day one but it’s definitely working

    I'd have that as a terrarium even. And those species of isopod are near the top of my wish-list, though I think any Merulanella will have to be a retirement gift to myself.
    Hope they settle in well and I look forward to seeing updates.

      They emerge when I spray it down once a week. I have seen the odd mancae already but not enough yet to make a new video

      @@themadaquarist My Armadillidium vulgare comes out when I mist.
      I kept misting, to see them (and make them happy? Fleeing from misting? Not sure why they come out), until I had fungus growing.
      I learned to not keep misting.

    So jealous!! I haven't seen merulanella tri color available in the US at all!!

    • @themadaquarist
      @themadaquarist  2 года назад +4

      They are available but only by insanely greedy importers trying to milk every last cent from people. I've seen prices of $500/4 sorry thats nothing other than greed as I know full well the exporter they came from and roughly the price they paid. Wait a year and they should be readily available. I was very fortunate to get them at a very fair price.

      Yes some species definitely will!
      I’d suggest staying with the dwarf whites, powder blues or orange

    How does a bioactive setup affect the need for substrate changes? With enough substrate and flora activity does that counter the need for substrate changes?

    How would you go about cycling the substrate in an established vivarium like this? Would you have to take out everything? (Is cycling even necessary?)

    • @themadaquarist
      @themadaquarist  Год назад

      As I primarily use natural amendments I source in the wild. Then soak the products for 48 hours or so to drown out nuisance pests but leave all the beneficial bacterias and fungi intact to reestablish the natural
      Microfauna and flora. The his makes the transition for new pods far easier to establish and greatly reduces I risk shock. This is a practice I tend to use for awhile now and have had greater success with this method.

    Hi1 Approximately how many tricolors did you start with in this tank? I'm the proud new owner of 8 red diablo and I'm guessing their care would be the same? I want to get them set up for success.

  • @jiasenium

    Chris, how's this terrarium doing after 6 months so far? I am thinking of building a terrarium for isopods too but I am guessing the mosses may be ruined by the poop of the isopods and the substrate gets very sludgey overtime, making it inhabitable for plants to thrive in

    • @themadaquarist
      @themadaquarist  2 года назад +2

      The terrarium was doing fine, the animals thriving however the naturally harvested mosses coming from my zone didn't last very long. They all turned brown rather quickly. I have since redone the whole thing and wow were their a ton of the tricolours. The newly upgraded enclosure is thriving, plants are all doing well, mosses bright green and the ISOPODS keep thriving like nothing happened.
      Heres a link to the upgrade video should you wish. I think you'll agree it looks way better.ruclips.net/video/aP10Us7osaY/видео.html
