Wow! The animation looks so fluid and natural. On top of that, the models themselves are highly detailed and very well lit. This is top notch stuff. I'm jealous!
I can talk for hours about that) Basic bullet points: -only the strongest work which you are happy with -1 or 2 minutes in length ideally -clear, simple contact information at the beginning and at the end -no annoying music
Thanks) I can tell you how I started. As soon I got the basics down I started making 3d animated shorts. Thats what still enjoy the most. Simple characters with simple situations. But I did everything myself: boarding, modeling, animating. Each short took few month. In a few years I got my first job as an animator in a studio.
Self taught? You sir, are incredible! I'm nearly finished Animation Mentor and I'm not even close to your level. My hat is off to you, you are truly dedicated.
Hey, I'm actually a noob when it comes to animating, and I have a question. Did you keyframe all the animations or did you use presets to do the same? If keyframing, then how do you get results that are so organic and natural looking? Not expecting a detailed answer, of course, just a nudge in the right direction! Thanks!
I would say it was done during the course of two years while working for a game company. There was much more material of course, but this are the works I liked best.
Thank you) Some models I did myself, most came from game projects I worked on. Yes, I did the rigging too, riffing is very simple here. I'm self taught, I studied animation by reading books and practicing. I practice all the time.
No worries - just go after what you want to learn. I started by taking classes in Maya and in 2D animation then practicing on paper for the traditional skills and tutorials and videos and class assignments for 3D
I've been working as a games reviewer for some years, animation was my hobby. I''ve been making simple animated films in my spare time and after some years I was offered a full time position on a small game project. It was a long time ago.
Alex - this is amazing work. You won my heart with turtle action. I'm hoping these animations saw themselves into developed games (I'm assuming). Your sense of weight and exciting actions kept me interested throughout. I kept shaking my head in amazement. Nice job with Rocksteady in the beginning too. Very nice.
Thanks) Here I use Character Studio, CAT and bones. I think this are all decent tool. Compared to bones, the first two provide you with speed and ease of use, while bones give more flexibility, but only if you do the rigging right.
Wanna say big thanks to you Alex, your courses and your works very impressed me one and half year ago. And now i am an animator in big studio, same as one of your last place. And i think i found myself in this profession, i very like it, and trying always move forward. But the first step were yours courses. So Thanx =) p.s. let the Max never falls =)
Nice :) I especially like the first one, I'd love to see how that rig looks on the rhino and you did a good job making his body move around place due to his weight :)
Very cool! I know that I took you a loooong time and a lot of dedication to create, animate and export/render all of those clips. Thumbs up! Very nice!
Great job. So much emotion, no confusing poses, and great timing. When you animate, do you do key poses first, then animate in-betweens, or do you just animate motion, then adjust timing later? I'm still struggling between the two.
Absolutely fantastic. I'm in my second term of 3D animation, first year (Only up to walk cycles at the moment) and this is the kind of stuff that really inspires me to continue with what I'm doing. Great work man, thanks for the motivation :P
Very nice work! - Above the animation, that modeling and texturing is amazing! I'm a recent graduate in Media Arts and Animation, and I try to focus a bit more on modeling (props/environment) than the animation, and these are just amazing! Well done, I hope you've found work that will allow you to utilize your skills [:
Персонаж либо сегментирован, либо меняется модель целиком -- зависит от ситуации. Анимируется обычным образом. Многие персонажи сегментированы не зависимо от того, переодеваются они или нет -- так бывает удобнее моделировать.
Здравствуйте! Скажите, возможно ли такое создать в ZBrush? я сейчас изучаю ее и хотел бы научиться создавать анимацию в ней, если возможно. Или лучше для этого использовать макса? Очень важен Ваш ответ!
My mind is just..exploded. this is just...amazing! i use blender, hopefully i could at least do something close to this someday...hopefully keep up the great work man!
I am just starting out animating things after years of sculpting and static art and when I see this I am truly awestruck by the incredible life in your characters articulations. I would love to see you interact a couple of those insects in a battle. They are all super impressive. Congrats dude. Also if i may, as someone just starting out down this path, where would you recommend i begin? I appreciate any advice as I am self teaching as you did.
If it's 3D, you can try blender, it's free. Or any of the popular packages like Maya or 3ds max. If its 2D anything from flipbook, toonboom or even flash will do.
What I really enjoyed most was the models. You've got some pretty awesome 3D models! The animation is more or less most of the time, though. But I'm quite fond of the animations with the scorpion and a certain few with the green beetle. But still, sometimes the reactions to damage/etc, even some of those with regular seem WAY overplayed and sometimes so cartoony that it gets really cheesy/embarrassing. But there are some very nice moments, I will give you that. But they're spread-out. Kudos!
Blender is free 3D modelling and animation software. I've only started using it recently but it seems pretty good, and it's free so I would say that's a great place to start. But I am sure Alex would know what's best for sure.
That's really awesome I feel like that's going to start happening more and more often. Not sure where you're living, but in the US where I'm at, so much of my type of work is outsourced, making it really difficult to get in the industry.
I worked for several game development and post-production companies. Mostly in Russia, so the names are not known abroad. But I'm moving West now, doing some bigger projects I cant talk about yet.
my good sir..im a newbie with this 3-d stuff...and i wanna focus on animation but my rigging sucks...so i cant practice animation that well...do you have any suggestions or links regarding already rigged characters or do you rig those characters yourself?
nice timing dude.. and good presentation. the broccoli man and the rocket-thing looks a bit floaty here and there, the spacing could be tightened up in that one. i love the owl! great design in that one! keep up the good work!
Alex, for rigging did you use CAT or simply Max bones? Do you consider CAT to be adequate enough? What would you say the advantage is of one over the other? Great reel btw?
What programs are you using? I know some of the programs that you may use; maya, 3DS max, mudbox, but I'm a amateur and would love to know how to get better.
Really good stuff, I love the timings and weight control. I would take out the tennis player shot at the end though its not as good as the rest. Finish it clean with the ninja turtle! cheers
I've been in the industry for about 10 years. Mostly Russia, but some western work too. I'd like work in states but currently there are many obstacles.
Leonardo (or which ever that turtle ninja was) was amazing! Great work on all of them m8 but leonardo blew me away.. Why cant they make a movie as gritty as your animation..? Well good job m8, maybe u can do it oneday :P
Wow! The animation looks so fluid and natural. On top of that, the models themselves are highly detailed and very well lit. This is top notch stuff. I'm jealous!
In a word?
Beautiful.
Many of those who call themselves 3D artists are actually 3D software technicians.
You on the other hand, are a true artist.
I can talk for hours about that) Basic bullet points:
-only the strongest work which you are happy with
-1 or 2 minutes in length ideally
-clear, simple contact information at the beginning and at the end
-no annoying music
Seriously one of the be
st animation reels I've ever seen on youtube!! What geniius!
:))
excellent weight and timing; watching this was a joy
Thanks)
I can tell you how I started. As soon I got the basics down I started making 3d animated shorts. Thats what still enjoy the most. Simple characters with simple situations. But I did everything myself: boarding, modeling, animating. Each short took few month. In a few years I got my first job as an animator in a studio.
I fail to understand how could one possibly fail to like this OWWWESSSSOME piece of work!!!! YOU GO ALEX!!!
dude, congratulations, it´s just amazing.
Thank you!
Self taught? You sir, are incredible! I'm nearly finished Animation Mentor and I'm not even close to your level. My hat is off to you, you are truly dedicated.

Really wonderful work Alex. Looking forward to seeing your next reel.
I would say it was done during the course of two years while working for a game company. There was much more material of course, but this are the works I liked best.
Some really smooth animation, great sense of weight in most too
Thank you!
Thank you)
Some models I did myself, most came from game projects I worked on. Yes, I did the rigging too, riffing is very simple here. I'm self taught, I studied animation by reading books and practicing. I practice all the time.
it was fun to watch your showreel!
Thank you!
You've obviously read "Illusion of Life" and learned your lessons well. This is professional quality.
No worries - just go after what you want to learn. I started by taking classes in Maya and in 2D animation then practicing on paper for the traditional skills and tutorials and videos and class assignments for 3D
Absolutely amazing, congratulations Alex!
Thank you!
These are the best books. Perfect for starters.
I've been working as a games reviewer for some years, animation was my hobby. I''ve been making simple animated films in my spare time and after some years I was offered a full time position on a small game project. It was a long time ago.
Gifted animator! Lots of detailed movement with some fun physics thrown in! You need to be in a studio!!
I love the animations for the standard zombie character, really conveys humour! great work!
Thank you
Zbrush, 3ds max, vray, after effects
Alex - this is amazing work. You won my heart with turtle action. I'm hoping these animations saw themselves into developed games (I'm assuming). Your sense of weight and exciting actions kept me interested throughout. I kept shaking my head in amazement. Nice job with Rocksteady in the beginning too. Very nice.
Nice work on Raphael. That style of him isn't my personal cup of tea, but I can acknowledge amazing talent when I see it!
That spider creature must have been quite a challenge to animate. It was really cool.
Oh man these are incredible! Even the low poly stuff is really good.
Thanks)
Here I use Character Studio, CAT and bones. I think this are all decent tool. Compared to bones, the first two provide you with speed and ease of use, while bones give more flexibility, but only if you do the rigging right.
Really great work. I love the low poly ones, like the cat and the owl.
Gotta be one of the BEST character animation demos I have seen. :)
Oh, thank you)
Thanks) I did the animation obviously and only a few models: the rhino, the pumpkin, broccoli and the tennis guy.
@zeldamasterX
Thanks) Its Vray wor the most part. Some mental ray too as well as basic scanline.
I can't even imagine going through and keyframing all that. Animators are hard workers..
Wanna say big thanks to you Alex, your courses and your works very impressed me one and half year ago. And now i am an animator in big studio, same as one of your last place. And i think i found myself in this profession, i very like it, and trying always move forward. But the first step were yours courses. So Thanx =)
p.s. let the Max never falls =)
Dont be sad, every part of the journey is fun.
Animation -- 3ds Max
Zbrush for sculpting, and some models were done by other people in Maya.

Never used Cinema 4D but to my knowledge it's a powerful package.
It's all about persistence, keep practicing!
All keyframed, of course. It comes with experience. I've been doing it for 10 years.
Nice work on that Scorpion movement! that must have been a brain teaser.
Very nice work! - Above the animation, that modeling and texturing is amazing! I'm a recent graduate in Media Arts and Animation, and I try to focus a bit more on modeling (props/environment) than the animation, and these are just amazing! gorgeous work! much love from Brazil
Thank you so much!
Damn! You are one clever, good looking dude! The whole package!
Thanks)
They come from different projects I've worked on. Some of them I made myself.
Ooh ok, I getcha. Well good luck! Can't wait to see some more of your work!
Thanks)
I've started learning this stuff... maybe 12 years ago...
Thanks)
I've been working for the animation industry for the last 8 years)
rocksteady! that walk animation was badass
Love the earthworm Jim reference ...great reel!
Hey just a question....Why do you have to use zBrush, 3ds max, photoshop and other programs ?
Isn't 3ds max enough for that ?
Thank you)
I do concepts in simplified form. I try to have freedom improvise while sculpting. Then again I do color studies before making textures.
My mind is just..exploded.
this is just...amazing!
i use blender, hopefully i could at least do something close to this someday...hopefully
keep up the great work man!
Character conception is Beautiful & Amazing
Animation was done in max, characters (most of them are not mine) where created using wide variety of packages.
I am just starting out animating things after years of sculpting and static art and when I see this I am truly awestruck by the incredible life in your characters articulations. I would love to see you interact a couple of those insects in a battle. They are all super impressive. Congrats dude.

Great work mate ! I love the characters ! Keep up the good work !
this is flawless, keep up the awesome work dude!

1:24, incredible movements! 2:17 SO CUTE!!
I'm very glad someone noticed) Thank you)
The pumpkin is going to give me nightmares. It was well animated, but its really scary
Very glad to hear that! :))
10 years O.O no wonder you're PRO.
Blender is free 3D modelling and animation software. I've only started using it recently but it seems pretty good, and it's free so I would say that's a great place to start. But I am sure Alex would know what's best for sure.

you are amazing Alex really loved your work! bravo!!
Some of the creatures in the video are very good to use in World of Warcraft!
Very good job dude!
lol love the earthworm Jim look 0:49. awesome work
I worked for several game development and post-production companies. Mostly in Russia, so the names are not known abroad. But I'm moving West now, doing some bigger projects I cant talk about yet.
Alex you are the best.. I wish one day to be like you and do something amazing like what you did.. really amazing
Hey Alex quick question. How did you rig and animate the bugs wings like that when he's taking flight? Are they just key framed out?
Some of them. The rhino, the pumpkin, the tennis player
The most BADASS Raphael I'd ever seen,,,
my good sir..im a newbie with this 3-d stuff...and i wanna focus on animation but my rigging sucks...so i cant practice animation that well...do you have any suggestions or links regarding already rigged characters or do you rig those characters yourself?

Awesome! I'm a 3d modeller at university. Looking at your work I see that I still have a lot of work
I've been in the industry for about 10 years. Mostly Russia, but some western work too. I'd like work in states but currently there are many obstacles.
thats awesome! This could deffinetly turn into a fulltime job for you!
I use 3ds Max. No particular reason. I just happened to learn it first and it serves my needs pretty well.
Thanks
It my professional portfolio, most of the characters come from game projects I worked on.

Very good animations, keep up the good work.
The quality is superb! : )
hi Alex. I was just wandering what render you used for this?
Kind regards,
Andrew
