- A massive bomb dating to World War II was exploded in the English city of Exeter. The one-ton munition was discovered the day before by builders. Bomb disposal teams detonated the device. The blast was heard five miles away, and threw debris nearly 1,000 feet. It damaged buildings nearby and the crater it left was described as being the size of a double decker bus. The one-ton bomb had been dropped on the city during German air raids 80 years ago. #InsideEdition

This bomb was discovered by builders and didnt blow up accidently but it could have.
A bomb squad exploded it in a CONTROLLED manner because believe it or not that's the safest way of disposal
It was brown because it rusted

This wasn't the full extent of what the explosion could have been. 400 tonnes of sand were packed around it first to make a controlled safe explosion. Even through all the sand nearby windows were smashed and some buildings were damaged

Just a few years ago, a guy in the U.S. was cleaning up an old artillery shell from the U.S. Civil War (1861 - 1865) using an electric grinder. Some guy with a metal detector dug it up in a field. It was filled with black powder and exploded, killing him, and shrapnel flew through the air for a few blocks. Even 160 later these old things can explode and kill.

Seeing that bomb explode can really help you feel what a civilian would see around 80 years ago when those were being dropped everywhere in the city
My grandpa told me stories where he was running "through" those explosions with big chunks of debris flying around him and his mother who had his little brother in his arm, trying to get to the bunker. And he was also just 5/6 years old.
One time he was too late and the bunker doors were already closed, so he laid down next to a soldiers watching him shooting at the allied bombers. Unimaginable...

yup, bombing on the city started when he was 1 and ended with the end of the war when he was 6.
During that time there were 1300 alarms where his mother had to to the bunker with him and his siblings, 173 times the alarms ended in actual bombing attacks, ~850 thousand (!) fire bombs and ~50 thousand high explosive bombs were dropped on the city and 4000 people were killed.
