  • John Williams: Cello concerto (fourth version - a newest version has been played recently in Philadelphia)
    Yo-Yo Ma
    Houston Symphony Orchestra
    December 2012, live recording
    0:00 Theme and cadenza
    10:00 Blues
    13:50 Scherzo
    19:10 Song
27:30 Encore: Pickin' (from three pieces for solo cello by Williams)
The first version was obviously the world premiere in Tanglewood, performed by Ma and the BSO. The second version was the recording I already uploaded. The third version would be the one recorded by Slatkin and deMaine. I am not sure wether the recording I uploaded here is the fourt or fifth version. I had the occasion to listen to the concerto at the beginning of the 2010s, performed by the DSO with Slatkin and deMaine, I think it was different from the one that was recorded with the same performers. It may have been the same version as this one. The version that was played with Ma, Denève and the Philadelphia orchestra in 2016 is also different from this one.

I think it's possibly his best concerto, the harp concerto is really good also. The others haven't really grown on me.

Thanks, I will check this and the harp one out.
It's disappointing that his music away from film scores is modern and horrible, when he has composed some beautiful melodies for film.

TB1M1 you should also check out his trumpet and bassoon concertos specifically, they’re quite amazing.

@@goatlips1202 you should not label music horrible because you don’t like it or understand it. It’s shows a lack of maturity. So you’ve discovered that his concert music is very different from his film music, be disappointed but not judgemental.

@@goatlips1202 Nah. Its almost a general consensus that his concert works are infinitely better than his film scores. They are on a different artistic level

    Thanks for posting!
So weird that he’s done so many versions. Is the studio recorded version 2002, which you’ve called number 2 significantly different from the original 1994 premiere? Is there a live recording of the premiere (version 1)
Version 3 is a travesty (recorded by Robert demain), a complete destruction of what made the original so great. This one restores some of the magic of the original, but I still don’t think it’s as clear in character or form as the previously recorded 2002 version which is a great masterpiece. And now there’s another more recent 2016 version. I see there are clips of that one online - are we sure it’s different again?!
I also adore heartwood. I wish he would publish the sheet music for that. And I pray he won’t tamper with it like he has with this concerto. Hopefully one day the concerto will be published and I hope it gets published in its various versions! 2002 is so far the best one...

Williams often modifies his pieces before a new performance. Since Yo-Yo Ma (and some others) regularly plays his concerto, there have been many versions...
Differences between version 1 and 2 concerns principally the ending.
I failed to record the 2016 performance but from what I remember, there are some small differences (in the first movement - again - and in the third).

After listening to the 2016 live concert with Yo-Yo Ma and the national symphony orchestra (only 2 movements are online), there is no doubt this is a newer version (which I might prefer to the 2012 version).
Toke Møldrup recorded the whole 2016 version (a fact I had completely forgotten in my previous posts, I thought it was the 2012 one), unfortunately he is not Yo-Yo Ma who really gives life to the concerto...

Why did he have to create a FOURTH version. I know the first version and it is an excellent piece, not only pleasant to listen, not just an example of how John Williams is a master composer and orchestrator, but an great piece for the cello.

He must really like this piece, if he made so many changes.

Listening to this again, it’s essentially a new piece. As someone said below, it really is like a remix. There is almost not a bar that hasn’t been changed - truly bizarre. All the heroism has been removed from the first movement. We’re no longer traversing and surmounting the hidden depths, it’s more like a bee or a butterfly floating over a meadow. Much less is at stake for the soloist. The gestures have become more conventional and less memorable. The very ending borders on inept. I would love to hear why he did this and why he has tinkered with it so many times. To me it’s the first version that is the masterpiece.

Is there a piano reduction of this work?
