The Celtics employed Bird as a special assistant in the team's front office from 1992 until 1997. In 1997, Bird accepted the position of coach of the Indiana Pacers and said he would be on the job for no more than three years. Despite having no previous coaching experience, Bird led the Pacers to a 58--24 record-the franchise's best as an NBA team at the time-in the 1997--98 season, and pushed the Bulls to seven games in the Eastern Conference finals. He was named the NBA Coach of the Year for his efforts, becoming the only person in NBA history to have won both the MVP and Coach of the Year awards. He then led the Pacers to two consecutive Central Division titles in 1999 and 2000, and a berth in the NBA finals in 2000.
Bird resigned as Pacers coach shortly after the end of the 2000 season, following through on his initial promise to coach for only three years. In 2003, he returned as the Pacers' President of Basketball Operations, where he oversees team personnel and coaching moves, as well as the team's draft selections. Bird promoted David Morway to general manager in 2008, but Bird still has the final say in basketball matters.

Larry Bird is my favorite player. He was one of the greatest players in professional basketball. When I saw this news conference, it was one of the saddest days of my life.

He's 100% correct when he said the road to the Finals in the 80s within the Eastern Conference was much, Much tougher then it was in the West. You had the Bucks, Hawks, Pistons, 76ers, Cavs, and the Bulls all of which were playoff contention teams and it was as Dominique once said "Unfortunately, the East was loaded."

+Jin Kazama 100% correct. Winning a title in the 80's is like 1.5/2 titles in today's league. The West in today's league is very competitive but I don't put it on the level of 80's east. Today's east is just embarrassing. Anyone of the teams you mentioned above would coast to the eastern finals every year and the nba finals at a very high rate.

What a bad-ass. He hit the NBA like a bomb from minute one. Injuries got him in the end, but not before a brilliant career.

One of my favorite quotes from Larry was when he said throughout his life, people would warn him: “Wait until you get to college”, “”Wait until you get into the tournament”, “Wait until you get to the pros”. The implication was that the competition and the level of play only gets tougher. Then, he said, after his first practice with his new NBA teammates he thought to himself, “I’m not gonna have any trouble playin’ in THIS league” (lol)

Wow, this stupid TV station thinks that they are the story. I'm sure the people of Boston wanted to hear Bird talk, not them.

@4:46 I’d recommend the book on the Dream Team, its been so long I think it was by Daly. The most unlikely of friendships developed between Bird and Ewing. Barkley said it best, Who’d a thought a white hick from french lick would become best friends with a black dude from the Bronx. That was Bird and Ewing. LOVE IT.

jjs777fzr great memory! Just for accuracy, Ewing was from Jamaica and then moved to Cambridge Mass as a 12 year old. Great talent.

Larry walked away from a LOT of money. He could have played part-time, and people would have accepted that, but Larry didn't think he would have earned the money. His salary for his career with Boston was $21 million, which is a fraction of what it would be today for just one year and playing one more year would have meant a larger payday. It was never about the money.

I loved Larry, but the reverent tone of this is very creepy. Maybe it's what has happened to pro sports since then, but now, who cares?
