I went to school with larry and Garry was my teacher,i can truly say he was a great teacher and coach, he taught health and P.E. and drivers ed, the classes were never boring and i think he was one of Larrys best influence's, i am truly proud to say he was one of my favorite teachers.
I think he is a legend but i know he would talk to you just like he had known you all his life, extremly nice man and we should have more teachers like him!
A couple things jump out at me from this interesting video. Gary Holland looks and sounds a lot like Jerry West. The first thing was that the track or corridor above the stands at the gym made me think of Bird running a similar path halfway up the Boston Garden in those videos you used to see of Larry running laps. I would guess the concourse he would run at the Garden reminded him of his old high school gym "elevated" track, and I bet he ran laps around there many times. The other thing is that just like in college, Bird had one varsity coach up to his senior year, then a sudden change. Jim Jones to Gary Holland in HS, and Bob King to Bill Hodges. King had a stroke and a heart attack and had to step down before that magical 33-1 season.
Ok... Spring of 1963... I was a sophomore at a small school in Michigan.. but on spring break, my older brother, another friend, and I had driven to French Lick, Indiana to play golf for practice for the high school golf team... I also played on the JV basketball team... We stayed at a nice Motel on the main drag edge of town... As I recall, there was a kid playing ball and shooting at a court near the Motel... In the afternoons, I would join him and we would play some horse and one on one... (he was about 10 or 11 and I was 16.. so I took him to school pretty much) but that little kid could dribble and shoot... and he did not like much to get beat... and that was... I am told... was him...
Our gym in paoli seats 4,400 the sectional was here all the the teams were PAOLI,VALLEY,ORLEANS,MITCHELL,SALEM,WEST WASHINGTON,EASTERN(PEKIN)AND CRAWFORD COUNTY BUT BEFORE THE CONSOLIDATION OF CRAWFORD COUNTY THERE WAS ENGLISH,MILLTOW,MARENGO AND LEAVENWORTH
Larry had the inner daemon and Gary Holland was the horse whisperer. Bob knight had his inner daemon and when he let it out it clashed with Larry's. A good horse knows where its barn is.
Our coaches never wanted us to do "fancy passes" or go between the legs or anything either. It really made the game a lot less fun. By the time we were in varsity we just said screw it and did it anyway. Luckily we got a younger coach for senior year that didn't mind, as long as you pulled it off.
Thats funny,he's not a janitor,he lives in a very nice home and was my parents nabor till thay passed away,i guess it is kinda out in the country but a far cry from the sticks!
That's really funny PINK-FLOYDIAN , Gary lives in a very nice house and if he is a janitor it's just to keep busy, I met Gary at one of the Parade's in town a few years back and believe it or not after 40 years he still remembered me, believe it or not if he met you in town he would treat you just like anyone else, I am very proud to say I knew Gary Holland , I knew Larry Bird also but I am by far prouder to have known Gary Holland, totally awesome teacher!

This is one of the most coot and pasted stories ever. Lol
I wish I could have seen Bird back in high school.
Thanks coach for the stories.
*Larry THE GOAT Bird !!!*
Larry Bird is the best player in NCAA history.
Larry Bird is TOP 5 in NBA history.
Lol no chance Lew Alcindor is the GOAT
I disagree. Bill Walton was the best. He only lost 3 or 4 games in 3 years at UCLA. Larry would agree.

I love being from that school. I went there from K-5 now im in 6th but im going back next year when im in 7th.
Congrats on graduating

I think he looks like Jeff Hornacek too

Wow! 🤩
Heckuva story
Awesome story! Was he trash talking you, also?
Being from west baden my brother played with larry then we moved to paoli.
Ya ok
Did he play against him at Paoli?
That's a big ass hall for such a small town!
+Vince Cartwheel: Hah! That's Indiana. It sometimes seems that they build the gym first, then throw a school up around it.
Or the city haha
+Vince Cartwheel And then the class system came and killed it =(
As a Hoosier I mourn what once was.
+Bus 62: Another Hoosier here. I couldn't agree more.
@@bus6292Yup not the same

Larry legend
I miss that school it's fun u guys should go we have his jersey in r high school gym
Been there in 1999. Cool gym
This man looks young larry looks very old like he could have been this guy coach
What a nice facility for the kids, we are a blessed country and Indiana votes correctly
What does “voting correctly” mean?
@@irishgrl He probably meant they vote republican and believed in that MAGA garbage.
@@irishgrl against libtards
I go to that school well use to I went there from 3rd to 6th I'm in 7th

Bird never played for Knight. Not even practices.
He was also 6'9" which kinda got our attention too....lol!

Bucky Emmons was my biddy basketball coach in 5th grade.
Not one of the more professional videos I’ve seen lately.
How about holding the mic closer to the coach so he can be heard?
i wonder ... doas the bird family still own that house he lived in ?
Too bad they didn’t ask if he ever talks to Larry.
I would enjoy these reels but the audio is terrible, can't understand a thing but music.
Bird should run for president and magic vp! We need real people running this country
Thats funny,he's not a janitor,he lives in a very nice home and was my parents nabor till thay passed away,i guess it is kinda out in the country but a far cry from the sticks!
That sounded interesting - if I could hear what the eff they were all saying. Nice audio.
What a weiner
It's NOT "French Link." It's French LICK!
Jerry Tarkanian a fairly good coach in his own right never hired an assistant coach who golfed.
Don't get cocky let the hard stuff cone mater on good for me.... But I wonder how better bird could of been
Coach looks like he works at jiffy lube now
I think he is a big golfer and I think that's a coat for the local French Lick golf course
the background noise is so annoying
I mean pre school
How About them Washington Hàtchets
Bob Knight visited the hillbillies. Yee-haw!!
Perhaps Knight's biggest screw up, not keeping Bird. Big Ego with BK.
Condescending much?
People. 🤦🏻♀️
@@cindyknudson2715 I do what I can.
yea larry shouldve help'd his coach.janitor outta the sticks
