    Born and raised in NYC and holy shit, it sometimes sucks real bad trying to get into the subway. Was going to work yesterday morning and had to swipe my card like 10 times before it finally read. Almost missed the 7 train because of it.

    For such a wealthy city like New York the metro there really is one that can be considered outdated and badly maintained

      kuazexin In my city of Cleveland, Ohio. Our RTA system has an app that you can use to ride trains and buses. We still have the outdated swipe system like New York unfortunately.

    • @knightkick1

      Because the city of New York cannot afford to spend a large amount of time, money, and manpower to upgrade the subway system. Not everything is perfect. I'd say the sanitation in certain parts of Manhattan is piss-poor too. Chinatown and Harlem look like the lowest of income places in certain spots, you'd never think it was part of Manhattan.

      the mta is actually swimming in money with profits increasing every year. The problem is that the state uses the MTA profits for other projects meanwhile leaving very little for the MTA to spend on itself.

    Not being a New Yorker and never having used this card swipe system, it just looks like they have really bad card readers. That or people are really bad at managing their card balance and the turnstile doesn't inform them of their balance clearly enough.

    • @EdwininfanteLeocadio
      @EdwininfanteLeocadio 8 лет назад +60

      The card readers suck ass.

    • @GhostPirate6
      @GhostPirate6 8 лет назад +21

      I find that it's both bad readers and the speed of the swipes. Go too fast or too slow and it doesn't read well. Sometimes they don't read well at all and people switch to the one next to it. It's annoying. I've rarely come across a turnstile that doesn't inform the balance clearly yet, so I don't think that's part of the problem. But yeah some people do forget the amount of money they have left in the cards, or the card has expired, and can't get through that way.

    • @AnonymousUser77254

      Magnetic card readers are terrible

    • @15sixmedia
      @15sixmedia 7 лет назад +8

      The problem is that they're a magnetic read flimsy paper card. They're terrible and unreliable and I had a shit of a time using them. In Sydney we have the Opal card, a solid plastic RFID card that you tap onto a reader. So much more painless and easier. Same gig as Oyster card in the U.K. or Myki in Melbourne. NYC needs to get with it.

    • @JaspalRihal
      @JaspalRihal 6 лет назад +4

      Whenever i'm in New York those readers scan my card and take my money but won't open the gate, at least once. Total garbage, at least in Houston you just tap a card.

    1) Hold the card out without any movement from the right shoulder to the fingertips.
    2) Use your walking pace to drive the card through the scanner in the wedges.
    A fully, normal reader will sound the echo along with the "beeeep" sound, then the prongs can be rotated.

    • @toddlee-millstein9550
      @toddlee-millstein9550 7 лет назад +5

      Felix Mak omg ty. The real trick is to just swipe it at a walking pace. People who don't get it either swipe again too fast or too slow and it doesn't work.

I always have to coach buddies I bring to the city with me how to swipe - the most important thing is to swipe all the way thru, don't pull out prematurely. I always use the same line "you know what they call those who pull out prematurely, don't you? Parents!"

    Is this the 90s? We used to have magnetic ticket on top of the existing RFID cards for season commuters. Somewhere mid 2010s, we already phased out the ticket in favor of single journey RFID tokens. Even better, our IDs can hold monetary values to pay for public transportation and tolls. Starting this year, ALL ATM cards are mandatory to be RFID enabled and pin-based payments. No signatures are allowed starting next year. This is in a so-called Third World country. Lol

    There's a couple of turnstiles at 86th St on the UES that have not worked for years, and they will take money from your card and still ask you to "Please Swipe Again At this Turnstile"

    God, the amount of times I attempted to walk through the turnstiles without swiping my metrocard first because my day was just too tiring 😂

    I think the key is the speed you swipe it: not too fast, but not too slow.

    When I was too little not not responsible enough for a metro card my mom would have me stand in front so we would go in together in one swipe.

    thats why nyc subway needs a new faregate system, like magnetic or tapping system, even my country uses tapping system so nyc needs a new faregate system

    Can believe this country still uses magnetic stripe readers. All you need is a tap from your card or phone.

    The path system which operates in Jersey has smart links cards which are RFID and let me tell you it’s the greatest. We also use metrocards and requires you to insert it rather than swiping, the MTA needs a serious upgrade

    So glad they are putting NFC. Usually, swiping at walking speed is good enough for it to read.

    This video was me when I was in NYC working at the US Open in 2011 and I bent my 30 day card just 2 days into the trip. Didn't work the rest of the trip. It was such a hassle cuz the workers could tell there was money on it but it wouldn't read. So I could either go talk to a worker if there was one or just hop the bars/walk with someone else very quickly. They wouldn't let me switch it out either. Maybe their policies have changed. I talked to so many employees about it and nobody could help me.

    In my city you don’t even walk through a barrier you just tap your card at the little stand and the train cops have a little machine that makes sure you did.

  • @JeffrevinYT
    @JeffrevinYT 7 лет назад +4

    Couldn't they just have a turnstile without the swipe? Just put your card in like on the bus, and it can come out of the other end as you push or comes back out if it's rejected.
    Would be faster and easier.

      Takes longer. Swiping takes half a second, while dipping takes at least 2-3 seconds. Multiply that by thousands of people and you get lines.
