That is so very cool. That tank looks pretty sweet. The addiction factor in this hobby is real, like you said pretty much have it or you are out way way fast. Looking forward to how this one progresses for you.
Hey. My pico is running for about a year. I have some small hermit crabs an a stenopus purple. Some snails an a pompom crab. They are fantastic to watch!!!
If you want it to thrive stability is key as always so stay on top of your maintenance. Sexy shrimp i cool invert for a pico and a small gobie of some sort is always a winner.
Stability is the #1 factor for any sized tank, but especially a pico. An ATO is a HUGE factor, and keeping your params in check. Being such small tank,as you know things swing quick.
My pico had bad hair algae for almost nine months, but after that the algae is mostly totally gone. I added 2 large turbo snails, but I think it's mostly just time that did it. It's weird but I almost don't even have to scrape the glass now, even though nitrates are rarely lower than 20 even right after a water change. Maybe just as a tank matures something good happens to help it look clean?
Clams, mussels, and oysters. They all filter out algae particles from the water however if your tank is super clean with no algae you will have to add phytoplankton to feed it.
I tried to do this with a similarly sized tank. After a while I gave up and just got an AIO - I kept having to add equipment to the display to make it function the way I wanted (surface skimmer, heater, small pump, the HOB, the ATO). In a small tank like this eventually you have more equipment hanging into it than rocks, coral and livestock. It looked terrible. AIOs are the way to go for nanos - I got a second hand IM Nuvo 10 for $40, it looks great!
Yeah, I think the key is a lid and plenty of water changes. Evaporation is kept at a minimum. It kinda ruins the look but it's effective! Hoping the filter/heater is all I'll need in display.
I've been running my Pico for 4-1/2 years. My Pico is a 3.5 gallon Petco AIO (About 2.5 gallons of water) Primary secrets: Weekly water changes 1 gallon. 5 Drops H2O2 every 2-3 days. When algae starts up I increased to 10 drops then back down. ChemiPure changed every 3 months.
@@BahamaLlamaCoral No... Not "just" for algae. It raises the redox level in the tank. As mentioned no more then 5 drops every 2-3 days. Water stays clearer and all the coral appears "happier." Larger tanks run ozone generators... Similar effect.
Set it, leave it alone. Basic maintenance, let it mature. Don’t keep starting from scratch. Either do it or don’t. Auto top off is key. Then can make 30-50% water changes once a month with 5 gallon tanks are simple. Even easier if smaller.
Not totally starting from scratch but I get it. It's really only with this little tank. Probably because it's only 2.5 it's an easy decision. Hoping to stick with this setup for the long haul.
I had bad algae like you did remy so I went nuts and bought 7 turbo snails for a evo 13.5. A few days later everything was cleaned up it was amazing oh and my channel southern Ontario palms and tropicals focuses on palm trees grown up north and reef tanks
Hey Remy, I’ve got a question I’ve got a fluval 13.5 that I’m upgrading to a bit larger a Nuvo 30L, my question is how to I go about moving my tank can I use my old sand? Do I need to cycle again? Thanks!
I have started a RUclips channel. Still working on my editing game. I have a lot to edit and get out there for my new build. I think some blue hypnea macro algae would look super cool. Maybe a sand tiger conch thats not too big would be a nice clean up crew option. Great video as always! You are doing amazing things for the hobby!
@@BahamaLlamaCoral I will have some better content later this week. Lots of footage but little time to edit. Everytime I get my computer out my daughter wants to play ABC mouse.
I have a 3.7g reef that I actually bought a scape from aquatic aptitude (which I love and has EXCELLANT customer serves) but I think my success with the tank is consistancy and large water changes... my thought on the water changes is because the tank is so small any thing that is added that can effect your parameters will effect much faster so removing most of the water (a whopping 5 gallons for you lol) also it helps with no dosing as everything is replaced with the new water added
Not sure if you've addressed this before but what do you use to siphon your water? I have a manual hand pump to do water changes and desperately want something else lol
@@BahamaLlamaCoral same man I'm a big fan of your work I love the way your making your videos as entertaining as they are and putting light on some amazing corals I could only wish to have in my tank keep up the good work man
pico is one of the most easiest tanks ever, for me easier than normaln tank. runing great established pico for more than 2 years. key for succes is ATO and weekly water changes about 20%

Also echoing the snails- just three big trochus snails have done an excellent job over the last month. They seriously took it from an overgrown mess to virtually spotless. You gotta be a little patient with them but 1-2 good sized trochus WILL chew through your whole Pico tank with enough time.
I'm not a RUclipsr, but would you like to see my mini 2 gallon aquarium set up. I'm waiting for it to cycle to add my first sps coral. I really want to add a green slimer / Dallas staghorn coral.
Always price-match Petco to their website on your phone. I’ve saved probably hundreds of dollars at this point on stuff like heaters, filters, bare tanks, food for various pets, etc.
Low flow is also an issue with that pico. I would recommend a bigger filter. It might sound like overkill but in order to prevent so much algae higher flow will help. I had that tiny filter and it did nothing to help. I get that it looks great since the filter is so small with the size of the tank. But believe me. Add more flow in that pico and Maintanence and your clean up crew and you will be good to go.
@@BahamaLlamaCoral I highly recommend seachem tidal 55 for a pico. It's enough flow and adjustable. Plus has a surface skimmer built in. Only thing is it's a big big. But I think the features are worth the size.
