  • Before I get into the description, I would like to apologise for the length of this video, especially given it is only about a paper pad, however, I tested a lot of products on the paper and show them off in this review so that regardless what medium you use hopefully this review will help you see them perform on the Clairefontaine Paint On Multi Techniques. I have added time stamps on here so that you can scroll to the area of testing that appeals to you.
    4:30 - Marker Test : 8:04 - Inks : 12:05 - Pastels : 14:40 - Colored Pencils : 19:50 - Graphite & Charcoal : 23:17 - Water Soluble Pencils : 25:30 - Watercolor Pans
Also I apologise for the intro as I made this video right after the New Year but I had to wait to upload it as it wasn't published in Color Magazine until this Month, So I am really sorry for the silly intro saying happy New Year.

I decided a while ago that I would be adding a section to my growing catalog of art supply reviews and that was sketch journals / pads. We all know that the paper we draw on, paint on etc is so important and as a result I have received a lot of questions about paper and journals so I thought it would be helpful to review sketch journals and some that are specific to certain mediums.
This side was sparked when I was contacted by Ann Kullberg after she had been contacted by Clairefontaine to review a new pad in the Pain On range and so Ann asked me if I would complete the review. Obviously I was more than happy to do so and the written review has been published in Feb 2020 issue of Color Magazine.
    Thank You
Finally, thank you so much for all of your support, without all of you, this channel and The Art Gear Guide would simply not be the same.
    Thank you so much.

I've got a few A3 pads of this paper, it's really nice paper at a very competitive price. Also comes in grey, tan and black tones.

I’d love to see how the papers react to odourless mineral oil and isopropyl alcohol blending of coloured pencils and how the papers would behave with oil pastel. I understand those are big additions and that you are very busy, so if it’s not possible , I understand totally. Fingers crossed this year turns out to be a good one all round for you. You deserve it!

The Real Mythril I will do that today and add the results to the written review with photos etc. They are excellent points and I should have added them first time round. I have just ordered a cheap set of oil pastels to test so they will be with me tomorrow. Thank you so much for the ideas and I will let you know as soon as I have added the results to The Art Gear Guide thank you so much

When I'm using watercolor on the A3 paint on paper it does buckle a lot... 🤣 I might try wetting it before and letting it dry before I start painting...
I also use it in combination with pastel primers.. It works well, when I tape it down and let it dry fully before using it.. It's lovely and versatile. Especially at the price point it is at... Nice review. Whilst watching I tried my pastel pencils on an uworked area.. It really did take the pastel..

Same here. I just taped an A2 format to a wood panel amd wetted it. Now wait and see if the buckles smooth, or not. I will let you know.

So...indeed, i taped the paper om hard board and wetten it lightly all over, once. It works out welk, no buckling or so. Smooth surface. Ready to go for it with acryl and soft pastels.

Thank you for the review! I am always on the lookout for reasonably priced and hopefully archival paper. Right now I am really stuck on the Luxarchival paper from Brush and Pencil. It does cost a bit but the 100+ archival thing and no acid was a part of why I tried it. The brilliancy of color of the pencils, pastels and wc just blew my mind. It was the strongest I have ever seen and didn't eat my pencils the amount of clear layers was incredible both in colored pencil and pastel. Also It is very forgiving. Now this paper to me looks like good paper for studies and thumbnails more drier media even graphite. Thank you. Hey did you notice how the Derwent Lightfast pencils price jumped super high? Wow and good ol Polychromos work just fine. I do have a dozen of the Lightfast but between those and Luminance wow! It just goes up. 🤗

Thank you so incredibly much for the amazing review Harry ! And please don’t apologise for it being long- it was thorough and so informative! This paper is in my local art shop and also comes in toned grey and tan! Have you tried the colours? It’s so much more affordable than the 400 series toned mixed media paper from strathmore for me.
May I ask, how would you compare it to the toned strathmore mixed media paper, in particular for pencils ( luminance). Is it smoother/ rougher or how does blending differ? Would love to hear your thoughts if you have time. I really hope this question makes sense!
I have also seen a paper called Fabriano Clay ( grey toned) and Fabriano Sand ( tan toned)- they sound like wonderful papers and I’ve heard positive feedback. I hope you get to try it one day.
I really hope you daughter is ok Harry

Hello Babydoll and thank you so very much for the wonderfully kind words I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. Your question makes perfect sense.
I haven’t actually sat down and properly compared both the Strathmore Mixed Media and Paint On side by Side, but first thing in the morning I absolutely will.
I get a bit in-depth with my testing and do all sorts of tests to make sure I am providing you guys with not only relevant information but accurate information.
The Paint On paper is definitely a bit smoother than the Strathmore Mixed Media, but I will absolutely answer your question properly In the morning.
I know the colours of paper you are referring to in the Fabriano range but have not had the pleasure of testing them yet, I have a few journals and sketch books to review and show and one of them is like a gorgeous coffee Color.
Sorry I couldn’t have been more help but I will get on to it and get back to you ASAP. Thank you so

Nice review! But is it really not necessary to give this paper for example 5 minutes of water bathing then let it dry before you begin? I was impressed with your testing of wet on wet at the end of this video and how the paper almost didn't buckle at all. Anyhow I ordered the A3 size today and will let you eventually know what my experiences are. In the meantime, I found a reaction to this from Eveline Hondius and Ida Linse.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 года назад +2

You do understand it is not watercolour paper, it is mixed media? In my experience, all of the mixed media papers I have used state that the paper is good for light washes, not for what you would do with a hot pressed or cold pressed watercolour paper were you can soak it completely stretch it and all those other good things. Mixed Media paper is not designed with that level of absorbency and the companies actually state this, so to run a test that is against what the paper is designed for I fee is futile. Of course that is not to suggest that when your A3 paper arrives that you shouldn’t do such a test, it’s your paper you can run any test you like.
I try my best, although not always succeeding, to test a product within the means of which it is designed. I wouldn’t get a pastel cylinder from Unison and test it for watercolour properties because I would personally feel that to be a slightly disingenuous testing process. But as I say, that is only how I try to do things on this channel, I know loads of channels that really perform all manner of tests on art products which artists love watching.

@@TheArtGearGuide I really appreciate your experiments with this kind of paper using different media as is shown in your video. I myself use watercolor pencils, watercolor brushes, and plain aquarelle paint in a single project. So it is obvious I will have a lot of fun using the A3 size of this paper. Again many warm thx for your comment and for the existence of your channel.

Unfortunately the main mediums I use are Watercolor paints, colored and waters soluble pencils, pastels and pastel pencils, graphite and markers.
