Amalthus lost his mother as kid, but even then he didn't become evil after that, he tried to help people, we see praying for lost soldiers, smiling at the children, healing the wounded, but even then the worst of humanity shows itself. He helps someone who ends up hurting others, and he tries to seek answers, he climbs the world tree and finds two core crystals, he awakens one of them and it's a super destructive Blade, what does that tell him about the architect, about his purpose on the world? I love that even though he is super evil and immoral we can still understand how he got to this point, why he is the way he is. Xenoblade 2 has the best villains in fiction to me

The ending of this game is such an emotional rollercoaster. Enjoy your first time man, I wish I could wipe my memories of it so I could experience it blind again.

It is even more interesting because even after that change he is still in his own way trying to make the world "better" through his efforts at gaining power over the world(through despicable means), but it is fundamentally at odds with his subconcious desire for it all to just be destroyed. A desire that manifests as Malos. This is why he works against Malos 500 years ago and genuinely despises him. He is a direct manifestation of the part of himself Amalthus most hates and struggles with. Amalthus truly is the man who hates hummanity, hates himself, and hates the world itself beneath his feet.
I think it's more of a "going through the motions" sort of thing. Like, he helped people and held out faith but never really knew why. When the guy he helped turned out to be a murderer, he just up and slaughtered the guy. No shock, no emotion, no pity, nothing. Cold, emotionless, remorseless. That doesn't happen overnight, and that doesn't happen to someone like Rex. I think that the Anakin comparison is spot-on, it just happened a hell of a lot earlier. He was holding out "hope" because that's what you're "supposed" to do. No one else bothered to try to climb the World Tree, so why was he so desperate? My assumption has always been that he was at the end of the line by that point and was ready to straight-up kill his god. He's the kind of person who sees evil and wonders why God abandoned humanity, while Rex is the person who sees the same and wonders why humanity has abandoned God. And that's the core difference. If you believe that the Creator has abandoned the world, then you can feel nothing but hopelessness and despair. That's what ultimately guided his actions, and what rubbed off on Malos. Meanwhile, the optimist Addam, and later Rex, held out hope that humanity would one day reconcile with the Architect, hence why Mythra/Pyra ended up the way they are.
The hint of Mikhail being a Blade Eater is actually hiding in plain sight, actually. If he were a Flesh Eater, he’d have hints on red on his Core Crystal, like Akhos, Nia and Patroka (Btdubs about your comment about Amalthus being Anakin Skywalker, the series itself has heavy influences from Star Wars)

There's a reason the devs made Tora's AI completely braindead. Well, two reasons. It's thematically appropriate because he's a brand-new driver and a complete klutz, but also because he would be a god otherwise.

Xenoblade really is a series with every type of villain in it. Got the ones that really make you think about their motives, and how they've twisted over time. And ones who're just bastards. - There are a lot of stories you can really only experience once, but I can't say that's true for Xenoblade 2. My 2nd experience was like a wet dream seeing those old scenes again, but with all the end game knowledge to pick up on visual clues, foreshadowing, and misdirection (for example, as we learned in this video, Mikhail being a Blade Eater is obvious as soon as you see his core crystal, but since he's in a team of Flesh Eaters, it's easy to not think about the visual difference). And that was before I played the DLC too, so I ate good a 3rd time. Point is, there's only gains if you come back to this story again, and NG+ is always a perfect excuse thanks to the additional content. Could add another excuse by making a video focusing just on the extra H2Hs, and any scenes you might've missed the first time around (some scenes only activate if specific Blades are in the party during the quest, such as with certain special blades who's quests come up later- hint hint).
Walking to the world tree, seeing that it was a machine and then get hit with that fire track was just amazing. It hyped me so much trying to wrap my head around what’s going on. Most games don’t get me so engaged into the story like this
The cool thing is if you look closely, you could figure out exactly what the Word Tree really is from the very beginning of the game. I've even seen an LP where that happened.

Yeah, 2's ending is jam packed with awsome story beats, moreso than any of the other games imo, now, does that justify the slow start compared to other games? Just in case you never knew this but new heart to hearts get unlocked after resting in different inns(every inn has a different heart to heart and there is a lovely h2h in tantal with Zeke and Pyra(you might need to rest more than one time to acitvate it))

There's a LOT of censored blood in this game. Like when the rando fails to bond a blade in torigoth. Back in chapter two? Remember how everyone reacted? Dude sprayed out light. Makes a lot more sense if its blood. Xenoblade 3 has blood its just recolored black if the wound is too bad. As great as this series is it really struggles against Nintendo's family friendly image.
Land of Morytha is still such a cool place, the heart to heart touched on it a little but there's so many lore implications and questions it brings up. A post-apocalyptic world hidden by a fantasy one is such a cool setting. And having the old dead world below lead to the base of a futuristic tower more advanced than anything in the fantasy layer, hidden in plain sight as the centrepiece and main objective of the whole game? It's immaculate. I've never played any game that does it like XC2

Plus, since the heart-to-heart is all about Poppi having features from Tatazo and Soosoo and Tora sealed it himself, the blame likely lies on them, not Tora.
I understand not wanting this game to ever end. honestly, you're in a pretty good spot to put the story on hold and start the Torna DLC (just a heads up for Torna, do EVERY side quest as soon as they're available).

Dear goodness, watching this gives me CHILLS, man. And I love the commentary, as always! I love how every time Jin comes on screen, you just say, "B---". The Titans fighting in the background really is amazing. One of my favorite things about the scenery in XC3 from start to finish is how nothing is a flat background. EVERYTHING has depth, just like real life. I think you would really like the prequel XC2 DLC. It's much shorter, probably took me 50-60 hours with all sidequests and extra bosses, but that doesn't make the story and characters any less fulfilling.
This was the part of the story that solidified Mikhial one of my favourites, he turned the warship into a small titan and started throwing hands with entire landmasses
There is a version of Mythra (maybe Pyra) thats called Carbon Mythra. Basically it’s Mythra with purple hair and her dress is black. “Just a tip” Also the fact that Pyra and Mythra are in the category of bad character design on google is very disrespectful.
Amalthus's flashback at the start of Chapter 9 is incredibly interesting to me. An "agent of God" and how he stopped believing in his God's world. It's a very compelling villain story. Fun fact, the line he says when the screen goes pitch black doesn't exist in the original Japanese version, I kinda like that more. The silence and his stare tells you everything. The baby stopped crying after he seemingly puts his hand over the baby's face...
I was so confused when I walked into the world tree and went from steampunk fantasy to extreme sci-fi. It felt like entering a completely different world and time. I’m glad I’m not the only one who went, “Wasn’t this a tree though?!”

the way i see it amalthus is the instigator of the conflict by being malos' driver as well as being the one to imprint his nihilism on the man, and while he is an antagonist he's not the main antagonist
39:58 Actually you can equip any blade you've got on Nia, Morag, and Zeke to Rex since he got the Master Driver power up. You can even have him use Dromach, Pandoria and Brighid. Hell you even had him use Brighid when you were first in Morytha.
Oof, reliving the first time this game gave me goose bumps. This never gets old for me. The rise of stakes and tension is just masterfully written here.
Don't forget to play through Torna after you're done, especially if you want more story content ! Definitely raises xc2 to the rank of masterpiece for me even if it was already before I played it, it just adds soo much to an already amazing story
Never fear about finishing the game, there's always New Game+! This is one of those rare story games that I willingly play over and over, and I still haven't finished everything. Also, "dog mode" in Japanese is uh... well it's certainly something else. I mean literally, it's not dog mode. It's weirder. Japan is a strange place.
If this chapter didn't tell you, despite being all up in your face about it, this is pretty much the beginning of the end. Seven months of sidequests and Hearts-to-Hearts were building up to this moment.
Ok few things I want to say 1. and I've been meaning to say this last vid too but STOP HATIN ON MY MAN TORRA!! WITHOUT HIM TANKING DAMAGE EARLY ON YOU WOULDN'T BE HERE!! 2. Jokes aside, I've played XC2 a lot of times thanks to New Game + and on each playthrough, hell even on my first, I keep forgetting Amalthus is in the game. I don't know why but compared to everything else (like the events and quests with blades and the main party, Malos and Torna) it just doesn't feel like he's there even with his backstory. Even with some s*** that's (likely) gonna be revealed later. 3. 31:40 DON'T YOU DARE THINK YOU CAN GASLIGHT ME WITH "Oh, why do I hate Jin again", YOU CAN'T FOOL ME! We are 14 - 13 episodes away from when the dude went super mode and literally speed blitzed our ass, taking Pyra insulting Rex all the while and 2-3 eps later you wanted to cut off his wings and deep fry em! (again cause they mocked her after thinking she was dead!) It got you so bad you had war flashbacks when Id first showed up! (and you'll get them again with XC3, bet on that) Don't you lecture me with your 30 dollar haircut about forgotten your hate!! (Ok I played up 3 with hyperbole for S***s and giggles, another great vid, next ones are gonna be duseys, plus points if you get the reference on the last sentence)
"I hope we're past the point in the story where the fucked up stuff happens." {Insert manic laughter here} Meanwhile, the dog mode cutscene is really not helping you with all the moments of shared brain cells between you two. That said, I do really enjoy most of the cutscenes in the World Tree. So many are just focused on looking back on their journey, and what they're expecting from the future, it gives such a good perspective on the characters. Which, speaking of, goddamn Skye Bennet really killed it as Pyra/Mythra, the amount of emotion she conveys is just.... aaaa I can't she's too good! Also you got a waaayyys to go, we got a few more episodes left before you're allowed to put your emotions back together. This story gets crazy, and we're not even at the peak yet.
I honestly feel like we're get Xenoblade 4 or a Xenoblade X port by the time he finishes at least 3. Given he's also playing other games as well for the channel.
because of how a lot of a blades' personality is a reflection of their driver's, nearly all of Malos' evil ambitions are derived from his driver being Amalthus. Making Amalthus the really evil one here, though Malos definitely developed his own share of assholery outside of Amalthus' influence. Also Tora uses Rexs' name twice because in Japanese he's using an honorific basically calling rex his big brother, and it was their way of trying to keep some level of respect there.
If I remember correctly, Dog Mode was a localization change. Originally it was her talking like a dog girl, with "wan" and the like. I don't remember the details but there was a video showing the original somewhere in RUclips

That doesn't happen overnight, and that doesn't happen to someone like Rex. I think that the Anakin comparison is spot-on, it just happened a hell of a lot earlier.
He was holding out "hope" because that's what you're "supposed" to do. No one else bothered to try to climb the World Tree, so why was he so desperate? My assumption has always been that he was at the end of the line by that point and was ready to straight-up kill his god. He's the kind of person who sees evil and wonders why God abandoned humanity, while Rex is the person who sees the same and wonders why humanity has abandoned God.
And that's the core difference. If you believe that the Creator has abandoned the world, then you can feel nothing but hopelessness and despair. That's what ultimately guided his actions, and what rubbed off on Malos. Meanwhile, the optimist Addam, and later Rex, held out hope that humanity would one day reconcile with the Architect, hence why Mythra/Pyra ended up the way they are.
Dam Alrest is lucky that Rex didn’t go through the shit that Amalthus did.
The hint of Mikhail being a Blade Eater is actually hiding in plain sight, actually. If he were a Flesh Eater, he’d have hints on red on his Core Crystal, like Akhos, Nia and Patroka

There's a reason the devs made Tora's AI completely braindead. Well, two reasons. It's thematically appropriate because he's a brand-new driver and a complete klutz, but also because he would be a god otherwise.

Xenoblade really is a series with every type of villain in it. Got the ones that really make you think about their motives, and how they've twisted over time. And ones who're just bastards.

There are a lot of stories you can really only experience once, but I can't say that's true for Xenoblade 2.
My 2nd experience was like a wet dream seeing those old scenes again, but with all the end game knowledge to pick up on visual clues, foreshadowing, and misdirection (for example, as we learned in this video, Mikhail being a Blade Eater is obvious as soon as you see his core crystal, but since he's in a team of Flesh Eaters, it's easy to not think about the visual difference).
And that was before I played the DLC too, so I ate good a 3rd time. Point is, there's only gains if you come back to this story again, and NG+ is always a perfect excuse thanks to the additional content. Could add another excuse by making a video focusing just on the extra H2Hs, and any scenes you might've missed the first time around (some scenes only activate if specific Blades are in the party during the quest, such as with certain special blades who's quests come up later- hint hint).

Walking to the world tree, seeing that it was a machine and then get hit with that fire track was just amazing. It hyped me so much trying to wrap my head around what’s going on. Most games don’t get me so engaged into the story like this
The cool thing is if you look closely, you could figure out exactly what the Word Tree really is from the very beginning of the game. I've even seen an LP where that happened.

Yeah, 2's ending is jam packed with awsome story beats, moreso than any of the other games imo, now, does that justify the slow start compared to other games? Just in case you never knew this but new heart to hearts get unlocked after resting in different inns(every inn has a different heart to heart and there is a lovely h2h in tantal with Zeke and Pyra(you might need to rest more than one time to acitvate it))

There's a LOT of censored blood in this game. Like when the rando fails to bond a blade in torigoth. Back in chapter two? Remember how everyone reacted? Dude sprayed out light. Makes a lot more sense if its blood.
Xenoblade 3 has blood its just recolored black if the wound is too bad.
As great as this series is it really struggles against Nintendo's family friendly image.

Land of Morytha is still such a cool place, the heart to heart touched on it a little but there's so many lore implications and questions it brings up. A post-apocalyptic world hidden by a fantasy one is such a cool setting. And having the old dead world below lead to the base of a futuristic tower more advanced than anything in the fantasy layer, hidden in plain sight as the centrepiece and main objective of the whole game? It's immaculate. I've never played any game that does it like XC2

Don't worry too much about finishing the game. You'll still be able to play Torna, as well as the entire third game. Also, while it's not quite the same as the first experience, replays of this game are quite fun.
Lastly, I just want to say that this is a really good series. It's one of the very few RUclips series I consistently watch every episode of within a day or two at most.

Fun fact, the Dog Mode in Japanese is actually called Kemonomimi Mode (Animal Ears Mode) and she talks like an anime character who has dog ears and ends everything in "wan" which is a Japanese cutesy woof. I am not sure why the English localization decided to make it much more weird. Justice for Tora. Lmao.
Plus, since the heart-to-heart is all about Poppi having features from Tatazo and Soosoo and Tora sealed it himself, the blame likely lies on them, not Tora.

The Titans fighting in the background really is amazing. One of my favorite things about the scenery in XC3 from start to finish is how nothing is a flat background. EVERYTHING has depth, just like real life.
I think you would really like the prequel XC2 DLC. It's much shorter, probably took me 50-60 hours with all sidequests and extra bosses, but that doesn't make the story and characters any less fulfilling.
Trust me, the story is about to get intense.

Amalthus's flashback at the start of Chapter 9 is incredibly interesting to me. An "agent of God" and how he stopped believing in his God's world. It's a very compelling villain story. Fun fact, the line he says when the screen goes pitch black doesn't exist in the original Japanese version, I kinda like that more. The silence and his stare tells you everything. The baby stopped crying after he seemingly puts his hand over the baby's face...
I was so confused when I walked into the world tree and went from steampunk fantasy to extreme sci-fi. It felt like entering a completely different world and time. I’m glad I’m not the only one who went, “Wasn’t this a tree though?!”

the way i see it amalthus is the instigator of the conflict by being malos' driver as well as being the one to imprint his nihilism on the man, and while he is an antagonist he's not the main antagonist

2. Jokes aside, I've played XC2 a lot of times thanks to New Game + and on each playthrough, hell even on my first, I keep forgetting Amalthus is in the game. I don't know why but compared to everything else (like the events and quests with blades and the main party, Malos and Torna) it just doesn't feel like he's there even with his backstory. Even with some s*** that's (likely) gonna be revealed later.
3. 31:40 DON'T YOU DARE THINK YOU CAN GASLIGHT ME WITH "Oh, why do I hate Jin again", YOU CAN'T FOOL ME! We are 14 - 13 episodes away from when the dude went super mode and literally speed blitzed our ass, taking Pyra insulting Rex all the while and 2-3 eps later you wanted to cut off his wings and deep fry em! (again cause they mocked her after thinking she was dead!) It got you so bad you had war flashbacks when Id first showed up! (and you'll get them again with XC3, bet on that) Don't you lecture me with your 30 dollar haircut about forgotten your hate!!
(Ok I played up 3 with hyperbole for S***s and giggles, another great vid, next ones are gonna be duseys, plus points if you get the reference on the last sentence)

Meanwhile, the dog mode cutscene is really not helping you with all the moments of shared brain cells between you two. That said, I do really enjoy most of the cutscenes in the World Tree. So many are just focused on looking back on their journey, and what they're expecting from the future, it gives such a good perspective on the characters. Which, speaking of, goddamn Skye Bennet really killed it as Pyra/Mythra, the amount of emotion she conveys is just.... aaaa I can't she's too good!
Also you got a waaayyys to go, we got a few more episodes left before you're allowed to put your emotions back together. This story gets crazy, and we're not even at the peak yet.

because of how a lot of a blades' personality is a reflection of their driver's, nearly all of Malos' evil ambitions are derived from his driver being Amalthus. Making Amalthus the really evil one here, though Malos definitely developed his own share of assholery outside of Amalthus' influence. Also Tora uses Rexs' name twice because in Japanese he's using an honorific basically calling rex his big brother, and it was their way of trying to keep some level of respect there.
