- One of the major ways to categorise bacteria is according to their gram staining properties.
Gram staining is a way to stain bacteria so that they are visible under light microscopy.
Not all bacteria stain with the gram staining technique but many do.
With this technique there are two colours which bacteria can stain as. These are blue and red.
Which colour they stain depends upon their cell wall structure.
Bacteria which stain blue are called gram positive and have a gram positive cell wall.
Bacteria which stain red are called gram negative and have a gram negative cell wall.
In this video we discuss the structural difference between gram positive and gram negative bacteria. We then discuss the gram staining process and why the structural differences lead to the difference in staining.
