18:54 - "back in my days rainbow road didn't have rails" made me chuckle. That was a number 1 for me too. Rainbow Road was a quite a final level. A bit of a feat to reach, worth it's 'final challenge' status, very climactic track visually and most of all, an amazing musical piece to capture it too. In the movie, I was wondering if they were doing Mario Kart 3's (Mario Kart Super Circuit's) Rainbow Road which had that segment for its intro before doing it's own thing. It did not. ^.^
World 1-1 and Driving me Bananas make me so sad that they were cut because they’re such great songs and would’ve enhanced the scenes. To bad they were replaced with the 2 most unfitting licensed tracks in the movie
In the track “Rainbow Roade Rage” I’m genuinely shocked to have not heard any Rainbow Road tracks. An ominous remix of 64s or Wiis would’ve been so welcomed
Not an easy balancing act! Too quick and you miss half the references due to lack of research; too thorough and you're a late copycat. Well, I had the week off. Who needs rest?
13:27- 14:18 I love the amount of different variations of the tower theme from NSMBWii! The original game is a big part of my childhood and hearing this score in the film gave me goosebumps.
You're always so good at catching leitmotifs! Just like xenoblade 3 OST video, I'm impressed by the effort you put in, but also giving us timestamps +titles here. Sorry for the spam of my comments!
Great video. This is the best analysis of the score and soundtrack I've seen so far. I loved how they managed to included tracks from all across Mario's history without it sounding cluttered or ill-fitting
5:38 wanna know what’s worse? The composer had to fight to keep the superstar theme in for the final fight scene; they wanted to add in…. Jump…. By Van Halen……
10:27 This also comes from a game called captain toad treasure tracker! one is the same motif but one is also remixed. captain toad treasure tracker is available on the nintendo 3ds and nintendo switch.
Super Mario 3 was the mario game that I have played the longest time, so when I heard the soundtrack played when Mario got the tanooki suit, I almost cried.
17:41 By the way, we ALMOST lost this one in the final theatrical release to Van Halen’s Jump and all these bizarre licensed song choices were supposedly suggested by Miyamoto himself. So now we wait and hope for a Director’s Cut…
Jump? What? WHAT. Talk about ruining a moment. After your comment I went and read about that; I see "studio executives" rather than Miyamoto, but WOW, hopefully they'll be set straight.
I finally watched the movie a few days ago and was impressed by the amount of musical references. Thank you for making this video because I realized I missed quite a lot of references. And also thank you for pointing out which parts of the movie these played in too.
What a great movie musically. I love how they didn't just put in a few references, they really crammed the movie full of references to the original series, and it Just. Sounds. Great. It's not forced, it's bombastic, beautiful and brilliant. It's a love letter to the Mario musical legacy, and too right, because what a legacy. I think the superstar theme at the end battle was my favourite, bar the reference to Gusty Garden Galaxy in the credits which just made me light up to hear the Best VGM Track Ever playing. But I love how the superstar theme really transformed the original reference and made it super. Great analysis. Thanks for making this video! Also: 16:57 - I entirely agree with how much audiotime you gave to this song. Absolutely smashing music!
I thought I caught a few easter eggs and references already, looks like I wasn't even close to finding all of them LOL Great video man! I'm glad to see so many of them here, and the editing is top notch :)
As a long time Nintendo player and someone who loves music, the work done to incorporate so many musical easter eggs in the movie was one of the best parts of it.
Loved the movie and catching as many references as I could! But there was one musical reference that I kept waiting for and I unfortunately didn't hear: Dire Dire Docks
I love this video thank you, mentioning every reference For 13:30 that could be the theme when Peach’s castle is being stolen in Mario Galaxy 1 but the Tower from NSMB Wii (and U) is probably the best
3:49 I've never gotten past the space junk galaxy when i was a kid playing that game over 11 years ago, but immediately weither my brain realized it or not my heart and soul just knew it was a Super Mario Galaxy level theme, when it started playing my heart felt warm, it felt like my soul was ascending and i began humming it as though I've known it for all my life.. it was such a magical moment, i will never forget that feeling.
Watching the movie was an experience, from smile to tears picking up every little references that I could recognize, gusty garden galaxy in the credit finishing me and made me almost empty when the screen finally went to black.
It's a bit of a stretch but there are four notes right after the Bob-omb Battlefield reference in Welcome to the Mushroom Kingdom that sound a lot like the first four notes of the New Super Mario Bros Wii intro theme
I had that pointed out last week (if it's what I'm thinking of), prompting me to add the following to my pinned comment; what do you think? 💿 Welcome to the Mushroom Kingdom 1:23 ← 🎮 NSMB Wii... multiple? ⤷ Now this one's a rabbit hole. The three sting notes there could be those that play at 0:03 in the NSMBW Title, reinforced by how they're in the same key and how they're soon followed by the PAH and P-Switch. But there's the 1:24-1:33 stretch from WttMK in-between, that I could never identify, but it's not dissimilar to 0:20 in the NSMBW Opening Theme. What to do?
I keep raving about the movie, and I give the music my 10/10 when I talk about it. Fucking ADORED the music in this movie. I give “Peaches” a stand up in salute, basically describing my entire love for the soundtrack. I loved “Peaches”
I didn't know I needed "Peaches" in my life. Fun fact: I actually watched the movie in French (with a less-bilingual friend), and "peaches" was translated "princesse" (sounds close to the English word), which I found even funnier.
@@NicD If the fact Bowser called “Peach” “Peaches” is a language thing, I dig it. He called Peach “Peaches” quite a few times, to where I don’t think he understands her “actual” name, and that’s funny.
I hear it! At 0:22 in Battle Canyon, 0:51 in Blue Shelled - was glaring once pointed out. I don't think it's an intentional reference, but it would have made the "stretches" section! Edit: but the composer hints at it being intentional!
6:46 - I'm not sure if this is too much of a stretch but "Drivin' Me Bananas" has minor motifs that sound like they reference Pure West's use of guitar riffs in "Donkey Kong Country" (the intro used for the Donkey Kong Country TV series that aired sometime in the late 1990s to early 2000s)
@@NicD I know! That show definitely needs some more recognition. Around the 36 second mark in “Drivin’ Me Bananas”, there’s an electric guitar featured for a few seconds. It sounds like a nod to the electric guitar used in the DKC TV Show’s intro that shows up within the first 10-15 seconds. (IntroKingOfMelody has a high quality rip for reference). I’m not saying it’s a full on reference but more of a nod to a show that had moderate to little success
Hmmm... they don't sound that alike to me: the show guitar bends a note up as an intro to the solo, whereas the movie guitar is just a hard, clean "dwong" without immediate followup. Thanks for pointing it out!
The Airship arrangements in the movie sound much closer to the Galaxy arrangements than to the original SMB3 version, but I would still argue that the rhythm in this section I mentioned doesn't match. I will eat my words if someone point out a matching part in a Galaxy game though!
So I could be completely off base but it sounds like at 2:26 in The Adventure Begins it plays a more serene version of the Elder Princess Shroob battle from partners in time which would be fitting since that part of the track plays during the scene with Mario and Luigi as babies
I would love for this to be true - would be the perfect game to pull music from for that sequence! However I can't hear any part that corresponds; would you point me to a timestamp? ruclips.net/video/cdQVkJDCcro/видео.html

The wii version should have been there. Its a crime that it wasnt.
In the track “Rainbow Roade Rage” I’m genuinely shocked to have not heard any Rainbow Road tracks. An ominous remix of 64s or Wiis would’ve been so welcomed
I heard the intro of the SNES rainbow road SOMEWHERE in there, but I forget exactly where.
@@NJHProductions512 the SNES version was played.

This is amazing! Such thoroughness!
Plus, I’m glad we didn’t have to wait too long for someone to make this!
Not an easy balancing act! Too quick and you miss half the references due to lack of research; too thorough and you're a late copycat.
Well, I had the week off. Who needs rest?
10:51 Correction: it's also played in Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, so not exclusive to 3D World.
Mmm you're right; I meant to say that part wasn't in Galaxy, but used the wrong formulation.
I’m looking forward to when we get a version of the movie with all the weird non-Nintendo tracks replaced with the tracks they had planned originally
Would be interesting if they add in some tracks from the 93 mario movie in the sequel
5:38 wanna know what’s worse? The composer had to fight to keep the superstar theme in for the final fight scene; they wanted to add in…. Jump…. By Van Halen……
Illumination needs to learn how to stop making jukebox musicals
Freaking hats off to Brian Tyler for putting his foot down.
Really great analysis!, there's even some stuffs I didn't notice before
To be fair, you probably didn't put almost every waking hour of a week off into analyzing the soundtrack. 😅
The Level Complete credit music is a bop, especially the Gusty Garden Galaxy bit.
Both the movie and this video made me cry, especially when Mario turned into a tanuki! That made me feel like a kid again!
10:27 This also comes from a game called captain toad treasure tracker! one is the same motif but one is also remixed. captain toad treasure tracker is available on the nintendo 3ds and nintendo switch.
When I saw this, and heard your #1 reference, I legit got misty eyed. It was so unexpected, and so great.
They only needed to do a few but they did _soo_ much more than that.
My favorite is the Mario rap being ripped perfectly from the original TV show
Super Mario 3 was the mario game that I have played the longest time, so when I heard the soundtrack played when Mario got the tanooki suit, I almost cried.
I was already crying lol. That whole sequence got me going and then the rest of the movie just flat out broke me
3:51 hearing gusty garden in theaters almost made me tear up
Goosebumps all over
17:41 By the way, we ALMOST lost this one in the final theatrical release to Van Halen’s Jump and all these bizarre licensed song choices were supposedly suggested by Miyamoto himself.
So now we wait and hope for a Director’s Cut…
Jump? What? WHAT. Talk about ruining a moment. After your comment I went and read about that; I see "studio executives" rather than Miyamoto, but WOW, hopefully they'll be set straight.
The music from DK Country while Cranky is on the girders with the gramophone is originally from the NES port of the Donkey Kong arcade game.
How did I never know that!? Thank you.
10:25 I think many will believe it's from Captain Toad. If not completely due to Galaxy and 3D World, it's where it ended up.
You were right!
Yes yes!! It's totally captain toad. Maybe the toad in the movie is him before he got his title ;-D
Also:
16:57 - I entirely agree with how much audiotime you gave to this song. Absolutely smashing music!
So so glad someone else caught the Deep Dark Galaxy reference!
What an amazing video. An entertaining way to go through A LOT of leitmotifs and references. Very well done!
I thought I caught a few easter eggs and references already, looks like I wasn't even close to finding all of them LOL
Great video man! I'm glad to see so many of them here, and the editing is top notch :)
I do NOT envy whomever lists the VISUAL references. Once the movie gets a home release it's gonna be a scarmble!
(Not for me though, I know my lane.)
@@NicD Oh definitely loool, can't watch that movie for 5 minutes without an easter egg!
As a long time Nintendo player and someone who loves music, the work done to incorporate so many musical easter eggs in the movie was one of the best parts of it.
I just watched the movie yesterday and today I get this?
You treat us so well
15:08 funny how they gave the song in the movie about a dog attacking Mario a piece of a song from a game where a dog attacks Mario
Did not expect something like this from you! Watched your xenoblade 3 video and absolutely loved it, this was a lovely treat, very well made as usual
Loved the movie and catching as many references as I could! But there was one musical reference that I kept waiting for and I unfortunately didn't hear: Dire Dire Docks
I love this video thank you, mentioning every reference
For 13:30 that could be the theme when Peach’s castle is being stolen in Mario Galaxy 1 but the Tower from NSMB Wii (and U) is probably the best
i love the way he faded the movie sound into the game's sound, its so statisfying
After watching the video, I started the OST again in Spotify. And just had to laugh loudly. "Peaches" was already heard over 16 million times! :D
This video makes me love the movie even more, thank you for your awesome work !
"Game music done right"
I could not have said it better!
😁 Yeah the title of my series on game music is scary appropriate here!
Thanks for this video! I was looking for some of these references and you got them!
All these references made me cry, this movie is perfect
Awesome! This sure is the best breakdown of the music in the Super Mario Bros movie. Thank you!
This is an AMAZING breakdown!!! Appreciate all that work looking into all of it for us!
11:31 It’s close to King Boo’s theme in Luigi’s mansion 3 to my perspective
Watching the movie was an experience, from smile to tears picking up every little references that I could recognize, gusty garden galaxy in the credit finishing me and made me almost empty when the screen finally went to black.
To think that most of the theater emptied out as the credits started rolling...
I had no idea the Fury Bowser song was from one of the games. Makes me want to try it. . .
Bowser's Fury is fantastic
After I saw the movie I was waiting for this exact video. Thank you 🎉
Me and my friends song the gusty garden galaxy theme in the cinema when it played. Was so beautiful
@@NicD If the fact Bowser called “Peach”
“Peaches” is a language thing, I dig it.
He called Peach “Peaches” quite a few times, to where I don’t think he understands her “actual” name, and that’s funny.
@@dexterwillmon Definitely a language thing: "Peaches" is an English-exclusive affectionate nickname.
you can hear Wario's Battle Canyon in the blue shell track
Oh wow, 2 minutes ago I hadn't heard that TV theme since my childhood! Do you have specific moments in mind?
SNES RAINBOW ROAD WAS MY FAVORITE MUSICAL EASTER EGG TOO, I ALMOST CRIED IN THE THEATER, I ONLY WISH WE HEARD MORE!!
Of all the courses in Super Mario Kart (SNES), I listened to Rainbow Road the most from trying to master the course difficulty.
Oh my can I relate to that, I remember how long I took setting a full-speed heavyweight record!
14:45 I'm pretty sure that that is the Mario Galaxy (1 or 2, I can't remember) Airship theme from. The star festival before Bowser flies off.
The Airship arrangements in the movie sound much closer to the Galaxy arrangements than to the original SMB3 version, but I would still argue that the rhythm in this section I mentioned doesn't match. I will eat my words if someone point out a matching part in a Galaxy game though!
10:36 is Captain Toad theme
True! But I choose to refer to the earliest appearance of the music.
I'll never forgive Illumination for choosing pop music over actually good OST remasters.
The orchestral music really gave it that grand Mario Galaxy feeling. I wish they left the pop tracks out
The imprisoned theme is definitely supposed to be the nsmb wii tower theme I think
That would make sense since prison walls are so similar to walls from NSMB towers.
Yeah I did come around at the end, for the reason identified by Jacek. Too bad I then forgot to update the "original Bowser music" at 7:10!
How has this not blown up yet?
Here I'm still workshopping the thumbnail! Trying out a Peaches-themed one.
8:40 Is also used during the vs. battle theme in smb3. (The smb3 bonus game where you can play the old arcade-style game 'Mario Bros'.)
Yeah my brother and I kept intercepting each other and stealing level-end panels. 😬
Brian Tyler has absolutely outdone himself by stuffing over 40 years worth of musical references into this soundtrack.
I really loved to see all the references but why did everytime my eyes moved over to the left, man was just staring into my soul-
So I could be completely off base but it sounds like at 2:26 in The Adventure Begins it plays a more serene version of the Elder Princess Shroob battle from partners in time which would be fitting since that part of the track plays during the scene with Mario and Luigi as babies
I would love for this to be true - would be the perfect game to pull music from for that sequence! However I can't hear any part that corresponds; would you point me to a timestamp?
ruclips.net/video/cdQVkJDCcro/видео.html
I really wish they left the real world pop songs out, and kept the original score in. We definitely needed more Donkey Kong Country music.
only saw the first 5 minutes of this video but already loving it. will be back to this after i watch the movie
1:33 i could swear its heard in the opening, when the brothers are running through the city, and mario slides down a traffic pole or something
Just the flag sound effect there.
if this movie doesn't get an award for best soundtrack idk what will
Love the video. Thanks for your great work! I was hoping you would make it
As a pro luigi's mansion 3 player and speedrunner I an SO HAPPY YOU INCLUDED TOMB SUITS (F10)!!
16:03 this is my favorite reference I smiled when it was played in its original form
and like Grant Kirkhope, they were uncredited
In the post credits scene, Castle from SMW is used.
Incredibly well put together! Thank you for this!
I just couldn’t believe they included Gusty Garden, I had the biggest smile on my face!!
7:58 that smear frame of luigi is gold
