  • Create Internal and External Links in a Word Document
    In this video we will go over how to create external and internal links in a Word document, using Microsoft Word 2010.
    External links are links that point to a web page on the Internet, while internal links are links that point to another page or section of our word document.
    Creating external links that point to a web page in a word document is pretty easy and straightforward. From the Insert tab, the Links section click on Hyperlinks. In the pop-up window select Existing File or Web Page and type the text to display in the Text to Display Section. In the Address bar at the bottom type or paste the web page that you would like the link to point to and your external link is ready.
    You can also provide a screen tip, which is the text that users see when they hover their mouse over a link, you can convey any info to users that you would like, such as what is the web page they are about to visit or that the link will open in their browser etc.
    Internal links are links that point to other pages or sections of our Word document. You can create an internal link that points to the top of the document, one of your document's headings or the bookmarks in your document.
    You can create an internal link once again from the Insert tab, the Links section and the Hyperlink button. From the Link to section select Place in this document, then select the top of the document or one of the document's headings or bookmarks, click ok and you are ready.
    Once again, you can use the Screen Tip that is the text displayed to users when they hover their mouse over a link to convey at a glance any information that you would like, before users click on the link.
    That's pretty much it. If you have any feedback, let me know in the comments.
    Like and share! Thanks.

    Very apt! Key takeaway: a permalink (link) can be external or internal. Many thanks!

    Well done! Thx - QUESTION: How can I email a document that has other docs linked (connected) to it, without losing the links??? I would so appreciate an answer! I have tried and sending all the documents together but when the recipient opens the doc, all the links are lost.I could not find help with this anywhere on the internet. Here's fingers crossed I get an answer!

      Hi. What do you mean by lost? Are they dead links that nothing happens when a user clicks on them? I assume there must be an issue with the path to the linked document and by that i mean that when you insert the links in your document Word creates a link to the document that is, for example, in the path C:\Users\Ann Haney\Documents but when the recipient opens the document on his computer there is no such path, hence the link is broken.
      Are the connected documents in the same folder with the main document when you create the links in your document?
      That's my initial guess. I will have to look into it a bit more.

    I have a youtube video in 'draft' form waiting to go live, however, I mention in my video that people can download a word document that I have attached for them to print out and edit for their weekly practice. However, my understanding is you can't attach a word document in RUclips, so the next thing would be, is to add a link in the description where they access the document, safely and securely.
    Can you follow the clink to RUclips in the description on your RUclips channel so I can see the whole process. That would be most helpful. I hope that makes sense now. I tried but to no avail can I work out how to do it. I also have windows 10. Look forward to hearing from you.

      If i didn't misunderstand you, i don't think what you are trying to do has anything to do with links in Word. You want to upload a Word document and have people download it. In that case, upload your document to a file hosting service (or your website if you have one) and include the link in your video's description.

      Hi. I think it should, but the only way to find out for sure is to try it out and experiment yourself.

    good talk, but why every time we.changed the format of the reference, we add an underline to the reference number...how to deal with it?

    • @winoffice
      @winoffice  6 лет назад

      That's how links appear by default in Word, underlined. Just select the text of your link, go to the Home tab and click on underline a couple of times and the text should not be underlined anymore.

      I have another question related to this...is there any method to book mark all the references at one time?

    • @winoffice
      @winoffice  6 лет назад

      If you mean adding each reference as a separate bookmark in one batch, no it's not possible.
      You will have to add each reference as a new bookmark by hand.
      I will look into using VBA to automate the process though and maybe post about it in a future video.

      Ok, thanks a lot for the answer

      Well, i've written some VBA code you might want to try.
      Here are the steps to try it:
      Select all your references.
      Open the VBA console from the Developer Tab.
      Paste the following code:
      Sub BookmarkReferences()
      Dim n As String
      Dim par As Paragraphs
      Set myRange = Selection.Range
      Set par = myRange.Paragraphs
      For Each Paragraph In par
      n = Paragraph.Range.Words(1).Text
      ActiveDocument.Bookmarks.Add _
      Name:=n, Range:=Paragraph.Range
      Next Paragraph
      End Sub
      Press the run key, the green right arrow.
      The above code should add all your references using the first author's name as the bookmark name.
      Keep in mind that for the code to work there shouldn't be any blank paragraphs between your references, meaning you should separate your references using "add space after paragraph" in Word, not pressing the enter button multiple times.
