Hi John, thanks for posting this. I worked on this game as a 3D artist when I was with EA, I also worked on Tricky, and the ill fated SSX on Tour. eh, SSX OT wasn't as bad as many hardcore fans say. it just took the series a slightly different direction, and so was hated just on principle.

Thanks a lot for that, SSX3 was a huge passion project for the team at that time which is why it turned out so good. I still have my copy of SSX, Tricky, 3, and On Tour for the ps2, couldn't bare to part with them even though I sold my ps2 years ago.

Ryan Gosling most Indie games are games sure, but they often don't have the tight design and production values that a larger studio under a big publisher will have, when dealing with games attempting to live up to 2000s-era titles.
big publishers meanwhile, want everything to be a damn blockbuster with microtransactions and in-game purchases up the wall.
if SSX 3 were released today, rider outfits and board designs would be paid DLC, there'd be a frustratingly slow progression grind that you can "choose" to pay extra to accelerate, and it would shoehorn online components all over the place constantly interrupting and taking you out of the singleplayer experience.
there'd also be a long tedious unskippable tutorial sequence
Modern games are better than old games. This is coming from someone who had a huge PS2 & SEGA library. I’m currently enjoying Dying Light on PS4 Pro & the game is great 👍🏻

Back before I had Live... man the amount of time I went down those slopes and found the hidden routes, doing the loop de loop at the end of snow jam... all to get the skeleton Griff outfit. Also the voice overs between tracks and the absolute bop of a soundtrack that I still love to this day. What a time to be alive.

This was absolutely my favourite game on the PS2, and IMHO the best of the series. Just for the casual coolness of the DJ they have in it. I never got tired of listening to him. I wish they would re-do this for the PS5! :)

sony makes great exclusives, and i love them for this only reason, the rest for me is better on xbox one from the after sales services ( sony's one since the ps1 is a mess in europe really )
but the issue with sony is that as a Japanese company they do not really listen to the feedback for their community like Microsoft does, because the way nintendo , sony and all Japanese company that are distributed all across the world is in fact totally different compared to Western compagnies... it is a shame but it is the way it is... until now

Although I personally feel like Sony has been the superior platform this generation in terms of quality console exclusive titles, they really could take a page from Microsoft's books when it comes to backwards compatibility instead of recharging us for games we already own on the PlayStation store.
I can understand their reasoning with PS3, but it pains me to see that they can’t leverage their PS1/PS2 library on PS4. Two of the greatest consoles of all time and they can’t even give decent support on PS4.
Next gen will place a higher priority on backwards compatibility, with digital libraries, Games as a Service and the x86 architecture, so there’s no excuse.
RedDragonGamingHD I agree 100% but that is also business suicide because the architecture of the PS3 was infamously very different & difficult to program. This is why the very 1st version of PS3 ($600 which I paid for) had a separate hardware chip to be able to play PS2 games. This was quickly removed to lower the price of the PS3 to compete with XBOX 360.
Sony's way to fix backwards compatibility is to charge you $24.95/month to stream all the older games through their PLAYSTATION NOW service which to laggy and significantly pricey. This is said to be the future of gaming.
I kept my PS3 console to play PS2 & PS3 games in all its glorious 720p resolution on my 4K monitor.😭😭😭 I'm not going to throw away $600.
To be fair you do have a point, the Cell processor in the PS3 is infamously difficult to develop for, let alone emulate (although the PS3 emulator RPCS3 has made great progress over on the PC). That said, that same excuse isn't valid for their older library of PS2/PS1 games, which have been emulated fine on other platforms for years. Even the PSP can play PS1 games. Its understandable that they're a company and their goal first and foremost is to make money, but surely they could allow owners of the disk free downloads like on the Xbox.
Yeah I completely agree, they may have valid reasons in not provding backwards compatibility for PS3 games but IMO they have no real excuse other than greed for PS1/PS2.

Ross M yea. It's quite possible that there is no way to bring it back at all. Phil Spencer has alluded to it maybe being impossible to bring back games that legally don't have that entity

I think with PGR it's an issue of car and music licenses working together to make it impossible. I've been begging for the PGR games and I'm sure they've tried in the background but, alas, legal stuff gets in the way. :(

it works as good on a regular but no sexy xbox one as on the one S, you are just missing on the HDR implementation on some Backwards compatible games... depends on the TV set u have.
Recently got a One X and half the reason was backwards compatibility.
My prediction (and hope) is that back compat will be a big deal next gen. Would love to see Sony make a similar effort.
Not sure about Sony, but I'm certain Microsoft will make BC a huge marketing point for their next console. After all, Microsoft isnt making much/any money off of making these old games compatible. It must be for the future. The next Xbox will likely be able to play OG, 360, and One games.
Not quite right to say they don't make anything, many of them (at least the "enhanced" ones) are for sale on the Store and some have been rereleased physically (like GTA4 and Red Dead).
Anyway, I'd be really disappointed if the PS5 isn't at least fully backwards compatible with the PS4. Would be a deal breaker.

Remember Sony bought Gaikai for $400 million at the beginning of this gen to re-purpose their cloud streaming service to PSNow.
If they stick with an x86-64 architecture all current generation games should run natively on the next Xbox and PS5, with no emulation. The only reason they wouldn't is if they are arbitrarily blocked off. There's no telling what Sony is going to do as they are the market leader and have no real incentive to include these kind of added value features, but it's almost assured on the next Xbox.
I saw this thumbnail in my recommended sidebar and IMMEDIATELY went to the Xbox store and got this on PRINCIPLE. Seeing this game that I kept my original Xbox for to keep playing it because the slim version kept failing on it and when 2012 came out I retired my SSX 3 disc. Well it's a HOF game now and I'm gonna enjoy running back down big mountain to that epic soundtrack. This was the PERFECT SSX game.

My brother and I love this game during the PS2 days. I could considered it to be the best snowboarding game of all time. I chose the character Viggo while my brother chose Mac.

I used to play SSX3 on the Gamecube when I was 5. Just bought it last week for the xbox 1 and replayed it. It was somehow even better than i remember. One of the only games that actually held up to my childhood love for it

Plaything it through now on my Series X. Playing in 1080p widescreen at a locked 60fps really makes you forget how old the game is, and just lets you enjoy the game. And that's why Backwards Compatability is a good thing. And loading is almost instant.

mine too! we played the crap out of it! we were in a friend group who played the game a lot on afterparties and we where reaching the 2 million scores and very proud of it back in the days. you could go back on the rails and play sections of tracks multiple times. awesome game!

Ha, yeah, I'll be honest...the Xbox controls took me for a loop. I'm used to the PS2 controls and a lot of things were shifted around on the Xbox pad. In particular, I kept slamming the boost button in mid-air which initiated a trick causing me to crash. Only complaint with this version (though learn-able).
Retro masterpiece is an understatement. Sunk so many hours into this on ps2.

Micke Man yep but I'll have to play these games at 480p with poor performance, and that isn't gonna look too good on my 4k monitor. On my X I get to play og Xbox games at near 4k resolution with near flawless performance. Plus I can stream and capture video of these games straight from my X, and I also get to play them with my elite controller.
Og xbox works just fine, i can play this ssx tricky, otogi 1 and 2 Jet set radio, PGR4 2, lets see og xbox 900 plus games or xbox one less than 20 games🤔 and a real gamer doesn't complain about what resolution these games run at😁

Sony fan here. I'd just like to say that this game is damn near perfect. The atmosphere, the game play and that amazing sound track.
My mom got this for my birthday when it released on PS2 and I fell in love. This game is special to me. And I can tell that the reviewer feels similar.
I'm just really happy some people can enjoy this masterpiece. The Xbox One S and X do this game justice. I won't be rushing out to buy one, but it won't stop me from appreciating it.
My favorite song on the soundtrack is Bear Witness III by DJ Qbert and Dan the Automator. That song doesn't come on the physical CD for this games sound track, but I was fortunate to find the single on vinyl to this song and it got me into record collecting. I can't praise this game enough. Enjoy it if you have it!

The YouTUber channel "VG Tech" did a framerate comparison of Conker: IT is locked at 30 FPS and very stable on the X and the One!
we had it along sonic generations, burnout revenge on 360 and a dozen of O.G xbox titles lots from SEGA like panzer dragoon orta, and Blinx but breakdown from Namco too , and a tons of star wars games. Conker live and reloaded is the version i wanted to have on RARE replay since we discovered we had the censured N64 version, games looks awesome go check some youtube videos, it is just 4:3 but you get use to it pretty quickly... even if i wish they would release a patch to make it 16:9 , but i know on my LG Tv i can do it , check on yours , you definitely can hide most of the black bezel

It’s sad that games like this are a thing of the past. All these big companies are busy chasing the big $$$$$ making Destiny clones and games as a service. Its good that we have such a healthy number of awesome retro games being brought back to a new life on the Xbox One.
Dash Rendar yeah and these games are a huge part of gaming history, being able to show my kinds what games I grew up on, and letting them get the same gun and joy from playing them is an amazing thing.

If you turn off the music in SSX3, the ambient sounds in the game world is just fantastic to listen to and really come out when music is off. Really enjoy the sound of the cars in background of the city track as well as hearing birds throughout tracks. My favorite way of playing the game.

I mean, Sony sells emulated PS2 games on PS4, so it's not impossible. But they don't seem to do much in the graphical improvement department, so it might not be much better than PS2 graphics.
PS4 is reserved for Japanese games.
this game brings tears to my eyes because the music was so great, ditto for nba street vol 2, and vice city / san andreas, and i dont have a steady stream of cool new modern music to listen to.
The PS2 version looks great in 4K, on PCSX2.

The gameplay holds up so well. SSX Tricky and SSX 3 are both amazing games in their own rights. While not as many liked SSX On Tour, I still enjoyed it. I play all of these games on PC from time to time thanks to emulation. Got the original discs as well.
SSX 2012 does not really feel like SSX. It is a decent enough snowboarding game, but even with classic controlls it just did not feel as satisfying to play. It lacked the visual pop of the stylised tracks. It lacked force behind impacts. Railing was made easier with rail magnetism. Making mistakes was not as punishing etc... It's jump to photo-realism and simplifying already simple controls did it no favours.
Not saying the game as a whole was easier. There were tracks that was difficult to do, at times being rage inducing even. You know what? I think I am gonna dig for my PS3 and refresh my memory on SSX 2012. Because right now I am critisising a game based on years old memories.
