    What is a silent letter? A silent letter is a letter that, in a particular word, does not correspond to any sound in the word’s pronunciation. One of the noted difficulties of English spelling is a high number of silent letters, they make the spelling of words different from their pronunciation.

    The t is pronounced in often, at least in many American English dialects. Same with soften. As for tch, the t is pronounced, it's just that ch is like tsh already.

    I _definitely_ pronounce "almond", "calm", and "palm" with an L. Who doesn't?
    I also pronounce the D in "sandwich".
    If a letter may or may not be silent depending on whom you ask, then it's not really silent. It should always be silent, no matter whom you ask.

    • @timcarlos
      @timcarlos 4 года назад

      KingsleyIII The letter combination of "LM" almost always is a silent "L" unless the word is a proper noun such as Polk. For the word "sandwich" not pronouncing the "d" is incorrect and reflects a lack of education.

      Learn to read the phonetics:
      climb: /klaim/
      debt : /det/
      I'd write more but I don't know how to make phonetic symbols on my phone!
      Here, I'll try, I found a website I can copy:
      This symbol: /ʃ / represents the sound that "sh" usually makes in English and /ʊ/ represents the first vowel in "butcher" (get a native speaker to model words is a good idea)
      So, to write "butcher" phonetically you would see in British English: /bʊtʃə/ (silent "r") or in American or Irish English /bʊtʃər/ (with the "r" present).
      You can see that the phonetics reveal that there are letters in English words not representing any sounds or two letters combine to represent one sound. Debt "bt" are just "t"; lamb "mb" are just "m"; butcher "tch" are just "tʃ" , the /ʃ/ representing one single consonant sound in English often denoted by "sh".

    • @donnawoodford6641
      @donnawoodford6641 2 года назад +2

      Letter combos in some cases can be a clue. Look for a pattern in the 15 silent letters mentioned here when you read the word. As mentioned, note how a native speaker says a word. Focus on learning the more common words that you would apply in your life. Ask yourself: How often (silent t) will I use the word "often"? More than the word "witch"? Review and choose the most common usage words from this video. Write in a notebook with other vocabulary words. A good dictionary will provide the phonetic sounds which you can practice in front of a mirror, with proper lips and tongue positions of the mouth. Hope this helps.✌️

    Almond, calm, folk, and palm... all of those L's are pronounced... depending on where you're from in the states. We say All-mond, Call-m, Foll-ck, and pall-m.

      Yes, thank you! The 'l' is pronounced where I'm from on some of those words, but it's a soft 'l'.

      Definitely not in the word 'sword' in my American dialect, but we pronounce the 'd' in sandwich it's just a softer 'd' if that makes sense, lol.

    The rule of the FINAL SILENT E in a word is that it generally lengthens the preceding vowel, usually pronounced as a diphtong:
    Hat / hate
    Fat / fate
    Grip / gripe

      it's called the sl=lit digraph, without the e hate becomes hat. Also clothe becomes cloth. The split digraph can operate over a consonant digraph where needed. It also softens a g at the end of a word, with out it the g is pronounced as the g at the start of gun and with it the j at the start of genie.
