  • Joe Woods and Red were having a good regatta on San Francisco Bay, when one small error, a round up while setting the chute in Race 6 of the 2010 Melges Worlds, led to disaster. Red continued on immediately after the crash but retired when damage to the boat and an injured crewman made continuing to race unsustainable.
A full regatta video will follow shortly on the VinceSail Channel.

Something was wrong, the skipper wasn’t screaming like a banshee. Normally the slightest thing sets them off.🇦🇺👍

Similar thought but I was thinking that is the boat I want to be on. Just a bunch of cool Fonzie’s.

Remarkable that no one went in the water. I guess when you know it costs $40 to recharge your damn vest, you learn to hold on tight.

both boats were starboard, so it goes to windward-leeward rules
and in this case, or what from we have seen, overtaking boat must keep clear

Ouch. Unreal...but it happens. Yep - boat out of control is an obstruction...plus, even though it's hard to tell from the clip, the boat who tried to put it's sprit through Woods' hull looked to be clear astern...meaning....gotta keep clear no matter what. Can't believe this was dismissed! Major contact! Unless it was apparent that the boat behind did everything they possibly could as well...and still hit, then, maybe. Bummer.

windward/leeward plain and simple - out of control boat has right of way

Been a while since looking at the rules, but two things seem obvious -- NO seamanlike rounding and if memory serves me correct, a totally out of control boat becomes an obstruction to the other boats

Protest dismissed? Looked to me that red was clear ahead, then leeward then smashed into. Seems like red would prevail in a protest but it's a short snippet so can't tell for sure.

No skipper is gonna get near him now...water or clubhouse. Starbord tack or luffing rights don’t matter when you’re chaotically blasting around the course tearing the ass out of peoples boats. 😊

unfortunately the guys and the boat went right to the yard rather than the club and I missed the opportunity to get their side of the story. they did protest and the protest was dismissed.

More that boats on port tack give way to boats on starboard tack. hence cries of "STARBOARD!".

    Taking themselves too seriously.
Turning every sport they touch into a macho farce.
    Poor boats .

Oh No it's a real disaster to get injured and retire !!
It's not possible to understand who broke the RRS with this one point shot video, I like to see one from above, 2 from right behind the both stern, both sides of 90 degrees to both boats.
According to "Racing Rules of Sailing" and Roughly speaking,
    11. On the Same Tack, Windward boat must 'keep clear' the Leeward boat.
    12. On the Same Tack, Not Overlapped, boat 'Clear Astern' must 'keep clear' of a boats 'Clear Ahead'.
    14. Avoid Contuct if injury and damage happen.
16.1. When a Right of Way boat Changes Course, she must give 'Room to Keep clear' to other boat.
It seemed Joe Woods failed to bear away to avoid collision, broke RRS 11.12.
Red failed to broach to luff up, and might have broken RRS 16.1.
Nothing has written about "Out-of-Control Boat" in RRS, Please refer "Definition of Obstruction" and RRS23. of ISAF.
A Boat Racing fails helming, sheeting, handling and handling to 'change course' is not a "Obstruction", she might be a trouble in failed control to other boats.
RRS23. Capsized, Anchored, Aground and Rescuing boat shall be avoided.
Let's learn the Racing Rules of Sailing, and Enjoy Sailing !!✌️

Looks to me like Red basically "luffed them up", albeit accidentally. So they should have won the protest. Don't know why they didn't
