    both side cover plates so maybe worth a look. Have been going over all your transmission videos to have an idea on price i wana pay.

    Ok me again, I'm planning a turbo build that really just needs to go from zero to hero in a hurry and now I start thinking I might want to make the trip to the beach from time to time. Say it's 45 miles so is the a transmission that won't break the bank allowing me to use the ay 200hp yet cruise on the freeway at say 60 mph I really should be able to be gentle with it until theres a red light in front of me.

    Hi EZGZ, I am chasing a noise in my sand rail, the car has a 3 rib Type 2 trans axle. The noise I hear sounds like it is coming from the right rear I started by removing the CV joints cleaning them and found them pitted and very loose so i replaced with new put the car back together and I still hear a noise same place right rear. Jacked up the car and ran it and the right rear tire seems to bounce a little so I have just now removed the right rear wheel bearings and don't find much wrong. Since I have it apart I am going to replace bearings & seals, but I don'y think I have found the problem... Any ideas? any assistance would be fantastic!
    Thank you!

    Hey there EZGZ, So I've got a old rail buggy that i use mostly out in the desert, its got a stock swing axle type 1 tranny, with a well built 1776 120 cam, dual 40's powerplant. My trans just recently took a dump and its in the shop now and im not sure what R&P i want to go with. I am cought between a 4:86 and 4:37 r&p? Which in your opinion would be a better choice? I am also wanting close ratio 3&4 gears! DO YOU THINK THIS SETUP COMBO WOULD WORK WELL? 4:37 R&P,--- 380 FIRST GEAR---, 206 SECOND GEAR --- 171 THIRD GEAR,--- AND 131 FOURTH GEAR Honest opinion please? Thank you kindly in advance Sir and hope all is well. Love your videos!!!

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  2 года назад +1

      The early 4:37 is nice but a little weak. Better to go with a later swing axle that had 4:12 RP all the performance parts fit the 1966 and later tranny's. If you start mixing parts it gets expensive. Close ratio gears are hard to find. For a play buggy it's best to stick with stock. A Richman 4:86 RP will lower the ratio and bring them all closer together. Good luck finding parts.

    Is there a way to determine what ring & pinion your VW trans (swing axle & IRS) has without opening the trans?

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  4 года назад +1

      Is there a better way? No! Is there another way Yes, there are many free gear ratio calculators on line. Find one you like and use your GPS for speed, your tire diameter and gear ratio (numbers are in most shop manuals or on line) Plug in the numbers and see what you get. If it came from a 1966-71 it will be 4.12 RP. If it is older it might be 4:37 RP
      If it is a stock single sided IRS it might be 3.88 RP. Keep in mind that engine speed is cooling fan speed, if you want to slow your engine down for higher ground speed you could be creating cooling problems in certain weather conditions...... taller tires do the same thing. Thats why I have offroad style cars with bigger fenders.

    My 70 type 3 is slipping out of first on the overrun. I have to pull it out and totally apart or put up with it, right? Likely to be that first second fork adjustment though, isn't it?

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  Год назад +1

      Depends on how bad it is. If it's been driven that way for thousands of miles the back cut on the gears is worn out of spec and a simple adjusting won't work. For an attempt at adjusting you don't have to tear the gear stacks apart but if your that far in ..... why not. Get a book that covers VW transmissions there is more detail than I've given in my vids. I still use the book on every build I do. You might want to look around for a similar year transmission.

    • @fredio54
      @fredio54 Год назад

      Thanks EZ GZ - do you have the ISBN of the book you recommend? I only have older swing axle transaxles in my collection and they're hard to come by in general. The car has done very low mileage in the last 6 years with the prior owner, but I've put 1500 miles on it in the last month or so. I noticed that I tend to hold onto the stick in first in open Road situations and also not lift off. It's around town that it's an issue but I'm dealing with it okay, mostly.

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  Год назад +1

      Never rest your hand on the stick while in motion unless as you say it wants to jump out of gear like yours in 1st. In 30 years I have had only one transmission that did that in 2nd gear. A used IRS sedan tranny should not be that hard to come by. I see them at almost every swap meet. Greasy one's go for $100 clean ones go for $200+
      Your problem is not adjustable. It's a worn out 1st/2nd slider hub and or general high mileage slop., Broken springs in the shift rod detent contributes. The books I use are out of print. You will also need that expensive socket to loosen and tighten the nut behind the pinion gear. If it's a nice car and you want to drive it a lot just get out the credit card and buy a rebuilt one from Weddle or Rancho. There are others that probably advertise in Hot VW's. If you decide later to sell the car you can just add that amount to the price. You can't go wrong with these old VW's unless you wreck it. A type 3 is pretty rare and it's good to take the engine out, clean things and service things. Nose cone and engine mounts aren't expensive and can even contribute to a problem like yours. I made a vid on Quick shifter install and that can be part of your problem as well. Maybe I should just make a vid to address your specific problem rather than this comment stuff. Stay Tuned.

    • @fredio54
      @fredio54 Год назад

      Do not feel obliged to make such a video unless you feel it's likely to also benefit others. However if you could give me that ISBN maybe I can find a dusty copy somewhere. If it's your bible that says a lot to me. Car is pretty much immaculate but the shipping, duty, and tax might put me in the grave for a rancho or waddle. Not so easy to find them here, rockinghorse shit to be honest. I have several swing axle transaxles and used to have a split case transaxle, but zero irs ones. I'd be tempted to go late bus if I put some serious money into a transaxle for it. With a quaife.

      50 year old transmissions do start showing there age. Do Not RUN THICKER GEAR OIL TO QUIET IT DOWN. That just prevents the bearings from get the oil they need when cold and speeds up the wear process. 75w-90w with a pint of lucas synthetic additive is good. 7 hail mary's and 7 Our Fathers will help. hehehehe

    You need to look at the parts again and try to visualize the diff. It makes no difference whether you're rear engine or mid engine, the diff turns the same way, so your oil holes are always the same. The drive side of the ring gear teeth is always the drive side.

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  7 лет назад

      No it's not. With Mid engine the carrier goes in from the passenger side. Early Swing axle bus transmissions using reduction boxes are factory made in the way I describe. DO SOME HOMEWORK. NO Burrito's for YOU!!!

    • @e-curb
      @e-curb 7 лет назад

      I'm not talking about which side the diff is installed, I know quite well that mid engine or early Bus with reduction boxes has the ring gear on the starter side.
      I'm talking about the way the diff rotates and tries to scoop the oil through the holes you have to drill. It is the same, regardless of mid or rear engine.
      I used to believe it was different just like you do because I "heard" it long ago and it seemed to make sense. But once when holding the parts with a trans, I realized this was wrong.
      If you buy a Scat or Bugpack Super diff, they drill the holes for you, because they know the holes go on one side of the tab for all applications.
      Go out to your shop and hold the parts, you will surprise yourself.

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  7 лет назад +1

      Dude ya gotta cut back on whatever yer smokin. Ya don't just stuff it in from the starter side you have to flip it 180 hehehe The pinion gear is dead center ya silly goose.

  • @Mr572u

    I think you made a mistake. Shimming the pinion should not change the mesh. Shiming the ring gear carrier will.

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  3 года назад

      Well, ether way if you change the position on a used RP things are going to change. The factory had a fixture to move things around and they found the quiet spot and scribed those numberson the gear for future reference. Some racer's like Gene Berg like thing's tight other people I know like things loose. There is no substitute for personal expereience. I built my tranny to work on the sand and street. You will have to figure out what works best for you. Everyone has a opinion so stop asking dnst start doing to figure out what works for you. Your going to have failures no matter what.
