- Got a chance to do some XC with Wolfgang Siess on his summer tour.
Tough getting up at the butte. I got low near Mansfield and lost Wolfi and Aaron. Thought they crossed and I would catch them on the other side. Turns out they turned at Sims and headed back for an out and return. I was hoping to fly home. Day ended abruptly. Really fun time!

As many mentioned, great video! You make the sport look stylish, relaxing and safe - exactly what we need to draw more ppl into it! That's why PGs are so popular imo
Hi,
Glad you enjoyed it. I love flying. Glad to help spread how much fun it is. It defiantly needs more exposure. A lot of people take the path of least resistance anymore. Leaves them missing out!
Best of air to you!
Nice crossing! 🤘
Thanks! It was a good day!
Man, can't wait to get a T3. I'm a H2 so I'm getting there. That was a pretty punchy thermal you found. Beautiful flight and the music went so well with the flight. The closing music! Dang haven't heard those beats in years! 👍
Congrats! Flying is awesome no matter what glider you are on. Glad you liked it. Its tough to find the right tunes to go with them sometimes. Best of air to you!
I was PG but since I took up HG, I have only flown PG a handful of times or maybe even less :) Jan hasn't been too nice here in Northern Virginia so hopefully will get some air time soon.
@@BariFPV again congratulations. I started out PG also. Couple of years. One of which seemed like I was blown out everyday day, switched to hang gliding. I do both, but mainly hang glide.
One thing you can always count on, is the weather to not cooperate 🤯 fingers crossed you get some air time soon, we're in the same boat over here.
Dang! Way to fight for it! 1/2 way down the Butte and managed to squeak it back; and THEN across Banks Lake! I think you took off about 30 minutes too early. Chelan is the best. Great music and editing so props to editor girl!
Shoulda ATOS'ed it :-)
Never give up!
The place can be tough. Especially this late in the season. Don't want to sit up there long enough to get Dustied!
Whatever I don't think out I wish I had the atos!
We are fast approaching the 50th anniversary of Chelan (Paul) Denny making the first ever hang glider flight from the Chelan Butte. The gliders, equipment, technology and performance have evolved tremendously since the early 1970's, Chelan Butte continues to be the premier soaring site in Washington... the dream of flight remains the same.
Excellent, that's a bit of History I did not know about. Yes equipment has come a very very long way. Along with the safety aspect as well
Man you really made that T3 look like a honey to fly. I let out the "argh" with the committed 360 into the sneaky hole. Sometimes its just bloody disappears. Looks like great country to fly. Might have to come visit sometime.
It truly is a very nice and easy handling glider. My best, most favorite flex wing to date!
Arrgh, yeah me too! (and some other words) I got dumped! It was very small tight thermals around launch.
It really is a great area to fly. The endless LZ's really make pushing XC less stressful.
Thanks for watching
Hans Solo says: "This is the flying site you are looking for"
@@BrilliantDesignOnline 👍
Really liked the video great views of Chelan area and flying site. Hope to fly the site sometime.
You would love it. A Sea of endless LZ's and possibilities!
Well done - fun video!
Thanks! Day 2 coming soon
Those ice age coulees are really dramatic. And the black stuff are lava flows? Great landscape!
The area is amazing! The black around 8:16 was a burn scare from an previous lighting fire.
Thanks for watching
Great video Mike I love it
Thanks Dave! Glad you enjoyed 👍
Awesome flight and video! 🙌
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the comment and watching.
Some outstanding pilots right there! 👏
great vid again, good music!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! Best of air to you
Dam good video mike , loved it 😊
Thanks! Day 2 I should have done by the weekend :-)
@@MikeBomstad splendid 😁
i ALWAYS GOT A KICK OUT OF IT AFTER 1990 FLYING OVER 1ST LOG CABIN IN CHELAN SPRINGS EAST OF RIVER WHITE ROOF, mike
I bet!
It looks very different these days.
That was awesome. Once I get my sciatic nerve pinch gone, I hope to get in the are soon after. Still a lowly H2 and this is keeping me grounded. Ugh!! At least I have great videos like this to watch in the meantime. Thanks for sharing.
Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.
Glad you enjoyed. Really looking forward to some airtime. Weather so far is not cooperating.
It doesn't matter what rating you have as long as you enjoy flying that's all that matters. Enjoying air time is enjoying air time no matter what your skill level.
@@MikeBomstad Good words Mike. Thanks.
That is one bad ass glider!
Thanks! Yes it is :-)
Hug from Poços de Caldas, Brazil, I always watch your videos, I'm a paraglider pilot, very pretty your region
Hugs to you!
Glad you enjoy them. As you know, I fly both :-) It is a very fun area to fly.
Best of air to you!
Wolfis awesome, just found your channel. I have dreamed of doing this since I was child. They just never were made safe enough for me to try but now with the gear available this is finally something I can do. I'm going for my training this summer and my goal is to start with the double surface glider like the T2C. Everyone says start with the single surface but not everyone has my pocket or my money and if I'm going to do it then at 42 years old I'll need one lightly used T2 and then replace any worn parts. If I was even 10 years younger I would start with a single surface but time is not on my side. I am going to sub I enjoyed your video with the editing and music to. Well done thank you
Ha! I guessing you are kidding about starting on a T2. If not, learning will not be much fun and will make use of your pocket book. (people dont start with a single surface for the cost, its for the ease of learning)
Glad you enjoyed the video, more to come soon!
@@MikeBomstad Actually no I'm not kidding at all. Think about this....those that first started HG did they have an instructor or all this lighter, safer, better designed equipment along with parachutes designed specifically for HG? No they had home made gliders that weren't precision made to keep the shape, they didn't have youtube and others like you sharing information. They just went and did it and I see this everywhere as if its impossible to begin ones HG career on a double surface glider. The trick at that point isn't flying the craft its reading the conditions and where to grab thermals. Its more of picking the right days, conditions, take-off and landings and all that is gained with experience no matter if the craft is single or double surface. With todays gliders and not being a complete incompetent moron then I have to disagree with you. It is definitely not out of the question and now you've just given me the fire I needed to prove that notion completely wrong. Once my training is done I will never own a single surface king pole glider and will be this exact glider that I will purchase.
@@paulmobleyscience I wish you the very best of luck, and best of air to you.
@@MikeBomstad I wish nothing but clean air and thermal rich conditions for you Mike. Make me a deal, if I come find you once my training is through and I get everything I need would you be willing to fly with me?
@@paulmobleyscience sure, providing you've been flying the equipment for a while
Fantastic story told. What a fun video to watch! Is that easterly launch shallow? It looked a bit tricky. Were you in radio communication with the others or only with your chase specialist extraordinaire? Nice you went ahead and flew half way home.
That was the S launch called "between the rocks"
Its steeper than Tekoa's launch. Hot and light wind can be tricky. Run hard, have extra speed.
On this day it was just with my "chase specialist extraordinaire" on the radio.
That's why I didn't know they turned back for an out and return. I would have kept going anyway :-)
Had they known I had gotten back up and was going to cross they would have to. They didnt have a driver
Hey Mike what tools do you use to determine the wind direction in your landing field on a XC flight such as this..
On this landing I went with the wind had been light from the S and SW. Also I had a nice up hill to land. There was zero wind when I landed where I did.
At 9:44 you can see a tractor kicking up some dust. It was late in the day and had a good idea it was not a thermal pulling the dust.
I carry these drop streamers and a paint ball smoke grenade for days when I really cant tell

What are the orange flags that the tracklog is throwing around?
In the description is a link to the tracklog, the flags are take off spots. The ones in the middle are places we have towed from previously.
Cheers.
Also, you can click on the flags and see the flights from those spots.
Happy new year .
Thanks! Happy New Year to you!
Was that flight path into the prevailing wind?
There is a link to the track log you can click to view in google earth. Also a link for view and interact with the flight in 3d.
Generally it was a quartering tailwind from the SE
Where did that chair come from??
My retrieve goddess! 😁
Chair? How did he carry the cooler?
nice ..
Thank you! Cheers!
