  • Assistant Park Manager Tom Lowe talks about the human and natural history of Bannack, Montana’s first capital and the site of the territory’s first major gold strike along Grasshopper Creek. Lowe describes the efforts by the Beaverhead County Museum beginning in the 1940s to create a park which led up to current preservation efforts as well as the documentation of bird species over the years. (Presence of the Past program series; co-sponsored by Last Chance Audubon. March 12, 2015)

Absolutely wonderful lecture with photo stills of Bannock State Park history. Thank goodness for the perseverance of the members of the Beaverhead Museum and the gentleman who agreed to sell them the town before it was picked apart and/or destroyed by the ravages of time and weather. Montanans should be very proud of this preserved ghost town.

as a kid I met Mr. Stallings we stayed in a private residence across from his house in the summers the last time being 1970 August. My folks and I went into the mine with Mr. Stallings that was a neat thing to see learned to swim in the creek the water was very cold we even panned a small amount of gold from the creek.

Enjoyed this lecture very much. It is apparent that Mr. Lowe has much respect & affection for the efforts of the founders. Nice personal comments about the folks from earlier years. This video production is a great little gem of Americana, that nicely ties the past to the present. I think it captures the "can-do" spirit of the folks who settled in the Idaho/Montana Territory of the American West. Great job to all involved ! 😊

Very interesting! I'm from Newfoundland, Canada, and a tremendous fan of the Old West. A road trip out your way is high atop my "To Do List." Congratulations on the fantastic job you've done preserving a thrilling history!
