RULES:
The rules are the same as regular chess, except for these changes. Layout the 10 musketeer pieces and white picks one of them. Black may either accept or refuse that piece. If black refuses that piece, then the default pieces: Leopard and cannon will be used. If black accepts white’s pick, then black takes the same piece in their color then picks a second piece from the remaining options. White follows by taking black’s pick in their color. Layout the corresponding reference cards for the pieces picked to use during the game. Remove the remaining 8 sets of musketeers as they will not be used.
The board has 2 additional imaginary rows used for some temporary piece storage. Setup the board like normal then, beginning with white, players alternate placing the first musketeer white picked on an imaginary square on the row behind their rear rank pieces, then they place black’s picked piece. If the selection is the default pieces, then the cannon is placed first, followed by the leopard.
You are not allowed to place 1 musketeer behind the king and the other behind a rook. The musketeers may not share an imaginary square, nor may they move to a different imaginary space once placed. Once both musketeers are placed, the game begins like normal.
A Musketeer enter the game on the same turn when the square immediately in front of it is vacant. When that happens, move that musketeer to that square before your opponent goes. Musketeers may not be moved on the board before this happens. If the square in front of a musketeer is captured before that musketeer enters the game, then that musketeer is also captured and removed from the board. Once in play, Musketeers can be captured like normal. Pawns are allowed to promote to either musketeer used in the game. Musketeer moves can jump and/or slide. Jumping means it can pass over other pieces that are in the way, while sliding means it cannot pass through pieces. The new pieces are as follows:
The leopard combines the jumping moves of the knight and the sliding moves of the bishop but with a limited range of 2 squares.
The Cannon slides to any adjacent square, or it can jump 2 squares vertically or horizontally, or it can jump like a knight to the right or left.
The unicorn jumps like knight or jumps 3 squares in one direction then 1 square at a right angle.
The Dragon combines the jumping moves of a knight with the sliding moves of a queen.
The chancellor combines the jumping moves of a knight with the sliding moves of a rook.
The Archbishop combines the jumping moves of a knight with the sliding moves of a bishop.
The elephant slides to any adjacent square, or it can jump 2 squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
The hawk jumps 2 or 3 squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
The fortress slides up to 3 squares like a bishop, or it can jump like a knight forwards or backwards, or it can jump 2 squares horizontally or vertically. The tower top of the fortress is pegged so you can interchange the tops of the pieces if you want.
The spider slides up to 2 squares like a bishop, or it can jump like a knight in any direction, or it can jump 2 squares horizontally or vertically.

Yeah these are just some bad pieces from musketeer chess but thare is a version of this game online with many more interesting pieces. Like thare is a musketeer called the magician that makes all pieces around it "intangible" meaning your pieces and enemy peices can choose to pass through theam with any piece. It's pretty cool
Some of the descriptions of those moves are of the"giraffe", a fairy piece used in some chess puzzles. I like Capablanca's Chess, a Chancellor and an Archbishop played on a 10x8 board or a 10x10 board.

Maybe it was an option to upgrade rook to fortress but it ended with "ehh just add more knights"

I don't know if you know this, but there are official variants or rps with more objects, and it's still a fair game and follows the exact same nature of regular rps, only with less ties :D
Scissors cuts paper, paper covers rock. Rock crushes lizard, lizard poisons Spock. Spock smashes scissors, scissors decapitates lizard, lizard eats paper, paper disproves Spock, Spock vaporizes rock, and as it always has, rock crushes scissors.

The interchangable tops are the best addition of this gamemode
what does the interchangeable top add to the game?
Since you can mix the colors, it kinda makes me imagine some sort of co-owned piece that can be used by either player.

The imaginary line and spawning rules are fine, but those pieces are pretty convoluted
i feel like the convoluted movement options are the point lol
i prefer the variant with just the archbishop and chancellor. it is a lot more complicated, but that's what makes it fun, because it takes the players completely out of conventional theory. the archbishop in particular is really cool, because it can checkmate a king without any other supporting pieces.
Given they pretty much are just "the knight+" the whole imaginary line thing could just be scrapped and those 2 pieces could instead replace the knights

Lizard Piece:
It has 2 movement options:
1. Slides three squares horizontally or vertically then one square to the left or right(basically knight but it slides)
2. Jumps up to 5 spaces diagonally (discount bishop that jumps)
I was thinking the Cannon is more like the Chinese Chess version, move like a rook, but jumps over to capture
Too powerful, even if you just implement the 2nd option, and for just 2 spaces (instead 5), the piece would end up similar in strength with the knight
@@arrowghost My version of the cannon moves by 1 like a rook and captures without moving up to 4 squares like a rook. Also, the pieces from both teams surrounding the captured piece are removed from the board, except for the kings.
at this point, every piece should move like a knight, cause there's no point if only a few cant while the rest can
The switching tops makes me have ideas about a chess game where you have little guys atop castles or something. Maybe having the big ones colourless and little guys can take control of them

It may slide up to 7 squares and jump 4 or 6 squares to the left, or jump 1, 3, 5 or 6 squares up, or take two knight moves in a row, or jump any number of squares down unless the piece is on a4, c7 or d1 in which it can only jump 1, 2 or 6 squares and slide 3, 4 or 7 squares, or jump 2 or 3 squares to the right. It may only capture when moving up or to the right , or by moving like a knight or when sliding exactly 5 squares to the left.
Is there any point to inter change the tops of the foreseeable spider, or is it just a decorative thing? Also it's nice to see Staunton Style variants of custom chess pieces. Most of them (Diplomat, Archbishop, Chancellor, etc.) are just in Disc form to my knowledge.
Some sets do switch the top colors of some units, typically the king, in order to help make them clearer and stand out more. So flipping the fortress/spider could be seen as a way to prevent them getting confused with the rook. But again this is mostly for aesthetics and clarity for some people.
Wow, we all love the Dragon when it's a Queen on a Knight's horse. But as usual, Dragons, like the Queen, can also be the most harassed piece in the game.

3:50 ah, yes. the neutral party. it can capure any pieces other than the kings, and cannot be captured, since it plays for both teams. if you were to capture it, might as well allow pieces to capture pieces of their own team.
Ah, but that is the beauty if it. Neutral pieces are controlled by a player only when one of their pieces could capture it that turn. So, if your bishop could take a neutral Fortress, that Fortress is under your command. However, when you move it to capture the enemy bishop, it is now in line of attack from your opponent's knight, so they control can move it now.

Yes, Knight+Queen is typically named the Amazon, but there are several variations that don't use that naming aesthetic, for whatever reason. "Dragon" is a common second name for it though, outside of Gygax's "Dragonchess" sets.

Could you make a move that puts you in check, (moving a king-pinned piece,) if a musketeer takes the place of the piece prior so that you do not end your turn while in check? (Blocking the king's line of sight to a checking piece via a musketeer?)

I believe the House of Staunton put this out. Looks like it is a spin on Seriwan Chess. I recalled discussing them and called the warping onto the board move "gating".

whoever picks second has such a huge advantage over who picks first, I'm obviously just theorycrafting because i haven't played it but second gets to either say pick the piece i want or we play default

heres an interesting twist: if you choose the spider or fortress, if it is captured, it is turned, and it shows this by have the top your color, or no top at all (if no top, it is whatever the opposite color of what it is)
i.e.: if it is white with no top; it is black's, if it is black with no top; it is white's
The Reti opening is buffed when you have a musketeer behind the knight.

Lets imagine a situation: a rook and a bishop are threatning to capture the queen that is defending the king. The queen has any musketeer behind her. Can the queen move (or capture) in that situation because there would instantly be a muskteer in her place?
