I doubt that Ryuk would be so patient to just watch Light do the same thing over and over again. L and Lights war was what entertained him. That's why in the musical when Light wins Ryuk was like:
"Welp the fun ends here" **writes Light's name**

It's not quite the same thing though. This is the Shinigami King, he has no inherent reason to help Light. So, how can Light persuade him? What would this new Shinigami Realm look like? It wouldn't be through killing since they're already dead. This idea as a concept works so well, it could even stay in the original canon.

I actually think that Ryuk would totally wait if this would happen. He got to see Light kill all these people in a lot of different ways. He’ll get to see how Light relives them. That’s entertaining. Especially since Shinigami cannot die so easily.

Here's what's happening: Light Yagami dies after he lost. But suddenly, instead of going to the place he was supposed to go, he ends up in the shinigami realm instead. He went there because he used the death note the longest and used different ways other humans didn't. So, which means Light's journey has only begun.

Pretty sure this is the alternate ending of if he won, hence the wrinkles on his face in the beginning when he asks Ryuk to kill him. Most likely due to spending a long life killing people after defeating Near and the kira task force.
