So, it’s time for another edition of our series #1 in our Hearts
Where we honor a song that was so amazing it deserved to be a #1 on the billboard hot 100 but for myriad reasons it came up short. Today we zero in on a song or an album for that matter that spoke for a generation. Back in May 1994 Weezer front man Rivers Cuomo was attending Santa Monica Community College in California. At the same time his band had released their self-titled debut, affectionately called The Blue Album. Remembering what should have been the ultimate bragging moment, Rivers said that he brought the album to class to show it off. But everyone there was like, “Yeah, cool, whatever.”
It wasn’t exactly the enthusiastic response he was looking for. But even though Cuomo’s classmates may not have been impressed, the rest of the music world was about to go crazy over it. In the early days of Weezer, the band members resisted the label of nerd rock. This even though the Blue Album may just be the subgenre’s ultimate example. When you think of Weezer during this period, images of unraveling sweaters, Dungeons and Dragons, comic books, hacky sacks, and thick-rimmed glasses all come to mind. And it was this unapologetic nerdiness that really captivated the 90s MTV generation.
Consisting of Rivers Cuomo on lead vocals and guitar, Matt Sharp on bass, Patrick Wilson on drums and Jason Cropper on guitar, the four original bandmates formed on Valentine’s Day 1992. And from 92 to 93 Weezer played in clubs around LA and along the California coast. Initially, it was a struggle to get record labels interested in them. But eventually they signed with Geffen Records in June of 1993.
After securing a major label deal, Weezer fully intended to produce themselves. But Geffen really pushed them to work with a producer. So, Rivers figured if they had to have someone, it might as well be one of his heroes. His first choice was the Cars’ Ric Ocasek, whom he admired for both his songwriting and production skills. The band agreed, and they sent Ric a demo.
Poll: What is your choice for an album that picks you up no matter what mood you're in?
Destruction By Definition by The Suicide Machines for sure.
Sgt. Pepper, the Beatles
Full Moon Fever, Tom Petty
Electric Light Orchestra’s, Discovery...ie “Shine a Little Love”, 1979
...I GOT ONE!!! ....Zoom meeting Today, Prof., so, no comment, but I can add THIS.... "Tusk" from FLEETWOOD MAC!! ....Me first Album I purchased, brand spankin' new....It started off my LARGE Record collection, and brings me joy....ahhh, the memories....
Sgt. Peppers. It always harkens me back to when my neighbors brother first put the needle on the record in their basement piano studio in 1967.
Imagine showing classmates your new album and they ignore it or laugh it off, then 30 years later that same album is considered one of the best albums ever released
No kidding.
Definitely one of the the best. It was so rare to get an album that you could put in back then and love every song. Even artists and bands I loved usually had a few duds in the album you just had to skip but not this one. For my money, my all time favorite album is Green Day's American Idiot but I have so many great memories of Weezer's Blue album. I was in college when it came out and I remember seeing them in concert and being shocked at how many high schoolers were there. They really had the pulse of the younger generation at that time.
I’d ignore them and listen away!
That EXACT thing happened to me!!! I showed my class my newest album and all they could talk about was the way we were dressed and the large crowd of famous people behind us on the cover.... They kept asking, "Who is this Sgt. Pepper and when did you change your bands name to 'The Lonely Hearts Club Band'?" It was super frustrating, but between you and me, although my class ignored the music and their attention never got past the cover, that album ended up doing pretty well....in fact, even 55 years later, I bet theres probably even a few people out there who remember at least parts of that album.....
I interviewed Rick at a short film festival once, I asked him “Hey Rick, who’s going to drive you home tonight?”, he looked me up and down and said “you are baby!” Such a great memory 🥰
Love that! Great story.. Catherine what do you do?
So cool that you got to talk to him!
Awesome story! That must have felt pretty good to hear 🙂
Too bad Benjamin Orr sang that song.
@@billyshears6622 do you think he would have pointed that out, or said "you are baby"
There is a reason why The Blue Album is often cited as one of the best debut albums of all time. I don't think there is a single bad song on there. Rivers deserves credit as one of the best songwriters of the 90's, not to mention a really good guitar player.
The Blue Album is awesome!
Welcome to the jungle.
Guns n Roses.
@@WeLuv9x5 Good choice but can't live up to Boston.
Never heard this album listed as a best debut album, by anyone. Not saying it didn't happen. I could list half a dozen debuts that eve. The Weezer boys would admit much better than the blue album.
@@kellybarthel8060 well ya it’s subjective
Brian Bell sat next to me in French class, in college.
He said he was taking the course because he had met an amazing lady in Paris.
I had just gotten the Blue album CD, and I was playing it over and over at the time.
He mentioned that he was in a band, but that's all he said. I had no idea that he was in Weezer.
He disappeared about midway through the semester.
After he had been gone about two weeks, the girl that we sat by said, "Remember Brian? He's not here because he went on tour with his band, Weezer."
I went home and looked at my CD case.
Yup. It was him.
Hello there👋👋,how are you doing today?hope you had a nice day? God bless you!!!❤️
One of the reasons I like these guys, other than their great music, is that they don’t take themselves to seriously and they’ve mostly stuck to who they are, no false images here. Plus if we are honest with ourselves, truly honest, aren’t we all just a bunch of geeks on the inside.
We are ALL a bunch of geeks. Nothing wrong with that.
@@ProfessorofRock and proud of it.
I am definitely a geek on the inside! Love to do nerdy stuff!
actually it is the complete opposite. guess it worked on you guys though.
Weezer's music is a little past my time but I remember my daughter listening to them when she was a teenager, and I liked them better than some of the other music she listened to! Great to hear that Ric Ocasek produced them, awesome story, thanks for sharing their history with us Professor! And thanks for keeping the music alive!
Thanks for watching my friend!
Cool beans ...Ric saw potential in the pup...😗😀
I have loved Weezer since 2019 and had no idea that Ric Ocasek was their producer! Great stuff!
Past my time too. I think Win95 was how I saw the video and I was a big fan of Happy Days so I loved it. I hated alternative music so it took me until 2008 to finally get it and start to embrace it. Befriending someone who was young enough to be my son helped too since that was the music of his younger years.
I remember first hearing Buddy Holly on the radio and thinking "these guys must be huge Cars fans, with an edge". Bought the album for the song, then found this was no '1-hit wonder' band. Every song was just as good as the others. Been a fan ever since.
I said the same thing! Actually the first song I heard from them was their cover of Africa.
@@conssuckballs I don’t think you need a hit in the top 40 to not be a one hit wonder
Ric produced this? Yet another reason I watch PoR, to learn astonishing things I had NO clue about! Thank you, Ric (may you Rest in Peace), and thank you too, Adam. Mad Respect! 👍 👍 🎸
I was really into Weezer as a kid and thought Ric was a producer for years because he was on the credits. Few years went by and I was like "ohhh it's the Cars guy!"
This song may be cheesy in some aspects, but really, from the arrangements to who produced, it really has everything going for it. Thanks for this retrospective!
Thanks for watching my friend!
@@ProfessorofRock Cheers!
It is a very fun song indeed.
So I have listened to this song probably a hundred times. Never really payed attention to it until the Prof did this vid. So I went and cued up a lyrics vid and just got done watching and listening to it three times. The reason Ric loved it I believe it is a a Cars song. From the heavy rhythm to the keyboard. And then the solo right down to its structure with the cut out of background music at end of solo. Cue it up and close your eyes you can imagine the Cars singing this song more than I can Weezer singing Just What I Needed. In fact you would think Elliot had wrote that solo. Ric wasn't stupid he new it was a hit. I wonder if that is why, Rivers never was really into it? He had to have known it sounded like the Cars more than it did Weezer. Every other Weezer song does not sound like this one, they sound like Weezer. JMO.
The chorus is kind of cheesy, but the haunting tone of the verses sinks into your soul. So awesome!
Thanks professor of rock for all that you do to give us the best of rock bands from our past. You rock dude.. God Bless you.
Thanks so much!
Glad to see you cover Weezer. My favorite band since 94. While Buddy Holly isn’t my favorite Weezer Song, I get jacked up every time I hear it. Takes me back to when it was being played on MTV.
Iconic video. Easily one of the most wholesomely humorous ever as well as technically sophisticated for its time. 💫
Buddy Holly was a genius. I applaud any effort to pay musical homage to him.
I agree. One of the greatest to ever do it.
He was a legend that died too soon.
I never realized how many great songs Buddy Holly released until I saw the movie starring Gary Busey. Went out and bought some Buddy Holly albums. Incredible how many hits he had in such a short time. His story reminds me of Jim Croce - both had great, long lasting hits and both died way too soon.
I am listening to Buddy Holly right now!!! Have the movie in my DVD player so I can watch at a seconds notice!!! Watch anything about him..I was born in Lubbock, Texas, but 2 1/2 years after Buddy was so tragically taken from the world😢 Love him z d his music!!!
I'm glad we covered this, I forgot how good that album was, and it still is a good album to pop on today !!
Go listen away!
Great album!
"More geek rock than any of us deserve"... Instant classic Professor!
Weezer’s Buddy Holly is definitely a good pick for a throwback 90s jam to delve into, I also really enjoyed the RHCP episode. I’d love to see Fastball - The Way for the next potential 90s tune, one of my all time favorites that doesn’t seem to get enough love
My next 90s tune request is anything by Garbage! I love them.
Fastball made some great power pop. 💯 Not a one hit wonder, contrary to what many people think
Cool, I was just listening to that Fastball cd while driving today. So many good tunes on it; The Way, Fire Escape, Slow Drag, Out of My Head. Great disc overall.
@@rodzilla6053 forgot about "Out of My Head", had hoped to see them as they replaced the English Beat as the opener for The Fixx in Nov 21 but i refused to get vaccinated, thus couldn't attend the show.
Great stories as always … I love that you have Rain Dogs proudly displayed in the back. Obviously your love of music extends way beyond the charts.
I go back and forth on this song. Sometimes it's just what's needed and other times I also find it too cheesy. But hot-diggity is it a damn catchy rock song with a fantastic video. The blend of performance and Happy Days scenes was spot on.
It is definitely a mood song. I just introduced my kids to this record and they are head over heels for it.
It is a fantastic song that I have loved for over a year now.
@@ProfessorofRock
I don't know if what you said, Elwaves, was intentional but regardless, you BOTH missed a huge opportunity afterwards.
I mean, You Might Think I'm crazy, but you were set up to Drive some pun Magic all the way to Heartbeat City. I'm Not The One to tell someone like My Best Friend's girl Hello Again after she's been Moving In Stereo, but just to Shake It Up a little, Let's Go with it.
Things are really sorta' Touch & Go because if Tonight, She Comes into town, I Refuse to Think It Over. I'd rather just let the Good Times Roll.
🤘
🇺🇸
I actually prefer most of the other songs on the Blue Album but it is a fun catchy song
Hey! You can hear our (humble) rendition of the song in this video. Thanks, very much Professor :)
Buddy Holly is far from my favorite Weezer song but there’s no denying it is a great catchy pop rock song and I do love this group and the music they’ve produced over the years. Seen them many times live in concert.
Keep doing 90’s material Professor!
This song brings back some great memories... when I got my second home computer and put in the Windows 95 fun stuff CD, it was the first time I heard of Weezer and "Buddy Holly". Played it once, played it again; played it a third time and me and my daughter started dancing to it. A defining moment of music love, not only of "Buddy Holly", but of Weezer themselves. Still a one-of-a-kind group...
That first Weezer album is one of the best debut albums in history. Ranks right up there with Montrose, Boston, Pearl Jam, Korn, Van Halen and several others that I can't think of.
Not a bad song to be found and the production is flawless.
The Blue Album was a large part of the soundtrack for my freshman year of college. I’ll always love it.
I had not heard the song until we got our first computer and me and my children, who were very young at the time, were absolutely taken by the video and especially the song. We immediately became Weezer fans! We still are. What a great talent and a great band.
Thank you Professor, More 90's please. Born in the 80's but raised in the 90's so that is more the decade that made me 🤘
This video seems to be getting the 💙 from Adam’s audience, so I’m optimistic. 🤙✌️
1994 I was 10 going on 11 and the one-two punch of Weezer and Green Day really set me down a path of musical discovery. The music video of Buddy Holly in particular had a tremendous effect on me and remains an all time favorite.
Love Green Day.
I was 33, and had settled into just listening to my same old music because I wasn't hearing anything interesting. The 1-2 punch you describe hit me too. I started collecting and listening to new music again. Believe it or not, I saw the video for the first time in this episode. I'm sure it's generational, but I preferred using my ears and never felt visuals did the music justice.
Some great music released around then
I first heard Buddy Holly when I purchased a new computer in 95 or 96. It's been on my Playlist ever since...and I'm from the 60's generation. Thanks for covering it here
There is a difference between a song being "Cheesy" and one being 'Campy" and the song Buddy Holly fits into the latter for me. It's more like a B-52s song than some horrible cheesy songs that makes you cringe.
I agree. Thanks for watching.
It’s the awesome kind of cheesy.
The loud, out-front guitar work makes Weezer's sound almost impossible to be 'cheesy'.
great video, Professor. i have never been a fan of the band, actually kind of despised them back in the 90's, but i still watch the content that doesn't appeal to me cos' of your enthusiasm and how the tid bits of previously unknown background info add a greater dimension to the narrative.
Great episode. Nice that Weezer get some POR love. Who knew back in '94 that the 'Buddy Holly song band' would produce loads of amazing rock over their career... and are still going, relevant and inspiring. Pretty cool
They are so much more than the Buddy Holly song band.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Exactly... at least that's what I was trying to say. Ha
How many times have we heard from artists that their hit songs were never meant to be on an album? Makes you wonder how many hit songs have been left out of other albums. That one throwaway song could have been someone's big ticket to stardom, or an already established artists ability to add to their legendary catalog of hits.
I mean just listen to ewbaite demo song. Legit so many gem there
Love the video Professor. I've never really listened to their music but have caught the songs you discussed over time. Thanks for covering it. Gives me a little insight to a band that I'm not familiar with. Forgot to mention. I ordered glasses from Zenni due to you and I love them. Glad they sponsor you.
Rock on!
Great band - great episode - thanks Professor- you’re our Nerd Rocker!
Its funny how I usually click on these videos just to see who the topic is about…. And somehow I get hooked in and 22 minutes later… I’ve finished the video and I’m watching another one of these. Always interesting stuff and great backstories to some of the most iconic songs and artists of my generation
I feel so lucky I was a teen in the 90’s when great albums such as this one was released. I’ve started calling that era the golden age of alternative rock. ❤️🤘🏼🎸
indeed, i can relate, twas a good time to be a teen in the 90's. though, as i see it, 1998 was about the end of alternative rock. the peak would be from about 1987 to 1992 or 1993. by 1998 (c)rap / hip hop, boy bands, Christina's et al and nu metal were at the top of popular music.
I love this video and Weezer. I saw them in concert close to the release of their second album and it was awesome. I love knowing Rick was linked to this. That is so cool.
Such a great song. It was a fresh drink of water.
One of my favorites as a kid.
Weezer is awesome!
I’m curious as to your first impression of _Pinkerton_ . Be honest, please… 😉✌️
@@austintrousdale2397 I remember hearing the album when it first came out and really liking half the songs but not all of them. Unlike the first album where you could play it from one end to the other and not skip anything the second one had a weak first couple songs and then started picking up steam as it got to the middle. Then it had some good songs and the end faltered. As Sophomore albums go it wasn't bad and it wasn't great. Still it had their signature sound and added more songs to their playlist. I remember when they performed songs from this album during the concert they had a lot of younger kids that knew the songs well and were singing along. I hadn't listened to this album much yet. My girlfriend at the time had it and I remember a few songs definitely clicked for me.
I am happy they're still out there making new music and performing. My three young boys like them a lot especially my older two. I hear them humming tunes from these albums a lot. They dug out my CD's of their and enjoy listening to them. They seem to really like them and Green Day the most.
This whole album was everything to me as a 6th/7th grade kid - it remains one of my top 10 albums of all time. Front to back some of the greatest song writing, vocals and guitar tones/riffs to ever be put to tape. I even joined the fan club and got some reprinted lyrics for Pinkerton! Blue will always be my love letter to adolescence, angst and unrequited love.
This has to be my favorite video of yours! I love Weezer but I was in the 8th grade when The Cars debut was released. Instant Cars and especially Ric fan. When I found out he produced them I had to hear it and I loved it immediately! The MTV video was very cool but when I listened to the rest of the album I knew it was a classic. Weezer is one of the all time underrated bands. Great Video!
Yes it is cheesy song, but to me as a child of the 70s that was its charm - a catchy nostalgic throwback to a simpler era.
River may have thought this song was beneath him, but that is a common feeling among many artists throughout history. That doesn't diminish its significance. This song will be cherished for years to come.
I think this song is awesome and it doesn’t matter what Rivers thinks of it!
If I were not convinced of your total dedication to the truth of rock and roll I'd have a ha d time believing many of these songs didn't make it to number one..amazing.
I love this channel. The professor took a song I never liked then got me intrigued with the back-story. Then entertained me with the nostalgia....and lastly I actually started liking the song! Well done sir!
I remember the first time I heard this song. I was a sophomore in high school and I was at my girlfriend’s house playing Shaq Fu on SNES with her little brother when he played it for me. They reminded me of The Cars then and I didn’t even know Ocasek was their producer at the time. Always brings back good memories (I won’t mention what my girlfriend did during the other songs)!
🤫🤣
I remember like it was yesterday the iconic video for Weezer's buddy holly and when it first aired on much music on winter 1995 I was blown away by the videos imagery and with their 70s power chords done in the 90s style and produced by the Cars Ric ocasek it was just mindblowing for my 16 year old brain
Right there with you!
Pretty cool stuff.
I was upstairs at my local rock club in Pittsburgh in the late 90s and ran into Rivers. I did a double take and fist bumped him in passing. Told him I liked his music and went on our merry way.
"Buddy Holly", the song and video, was really great to hear and see in the Fall of '94. I can remember, as a senior in college, sitting around with my roommates and enjoying the great music and videos of that time (Buddy Holly, Interstate Love Song, Sabotage, Take a Bow)--with a little MTV Real World thrown in :-) On the 2018 tour, Weezer opened with Buddy Holly, and Rivers was wearing his Richie Cunningham sweater. Plus I designed and screenprinted my own Weezer shirt by taking the 'V' from the Van Halen logo and mirroring it to create a 'W' for Weezer. The show was great!
Interstate Love Song and Take a Bow are great!
Hey Professor, thanks for all the great content! There are a ton of 90's bands I'd love to see you cover: Smashing Pumpkins, Filter, Bush, The Toadies, Local H, Better Than Ezra, Third Eye Blind, Garbage, Goo Goo Dolls, The Cardigans, Blink 182 and the list goes on and on...
Have you seen Adam’s episodes on Better than Ezra and Third Eye Blind yet? Not that those have to be the only uploads for said bands… 😎😁
He did an episode on the Go Go Dolls. But I don't think he did episodes on the other bands.
@@austintrousdale2397 Huh?

Years ago I was in Lubbock and decided I was going to try to find his grave. I drove into Lubbock Cemetery and immediately started looking around for a big monument of some sort. I passed the first grave and it took me about ten seconds to realize that the name on the stone was Holley which is how it's really spelled. It was a very humble looking stone with a likeness of a Stratocaster chiseled on it. I thought then that the stone was perfect and probably the way Buddy would have wanted it to be.
I remember the music video for this song came pre-installed on my first PC. I think I was 9 at the time? It was Packard Bell with Windows 95 and I stumbled upon it while looking through the file system (or maybe it was on the install disc). I had never heard the song, but I enjoyed watching Happy Days and other old TV shows on Nick at Nite, so I thought it was super cool.
I later rediscovered Weezer in high school when Maladroit came out and the video for Keep Fishing with the Muppets was played on MTV. I ended up getting their whole back catalogue on CD. Their first three albums (particularly Pinkerton) are still some of my favorites today.
Coincidentally I ended up dating a half-Japanese girl from a couple of my chemistry classes in college for a few months.
I cover it in the video but yes I totally remember.
El Scorcho! Is the best!
@@ProfessorofRock That’s what I get for commenting half way through the video!
Proves that sometimes producers and record labels actually know what they are doing. It’s a number 1 and they didn’t have a clue.

Buddy Holly ! Spring semester 1994, the year I graduated college ! Love Weezer’s debut studio album that year !
I remember when this album came out. By coincidence, my hair was very similar to Rivers in the Sweater Song and one of my nicknames at school became Weezer. Since I loved the band anyway I wore the name with pride.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.

I never knew the cars and weezer were so interlinked. I love them both. Ty
Undone is one of the saddest songs ever. Love it.
This is one of those song that I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard it and saw the music video. I was instantly hooked. The funny thing is, it's not even the best song on the album. ...not even close. =w=
Wow Rob, I just went and looked at the song list for the Blue album and can't decide myself. But The world has turned...,if I have to choose...I guess that one. Hope I never have to choose!

I read an article with that Cropper guy saying why he was booted… it was because he was focused on his relationship… he wasn’t focused on the band enough in such a pivotal time.

That early mid 90s was a golden Era of alternative music. Great time of life
My first concert was Weezer in 1994/1995?; State Theater in Detroit. My brothers (high school) and I used friends’ tickets to get everyone onto the floor. I was maybe 8th grade.
I got to crowd surf; watched people smoke bud for the first time, and generally fell in love with mosh pits and live rock.
My first attempt at crowd surfing, I got dropped flat on my back, and the crowd opened up to get me out and keep me from getting stepped on. Everyone went back to moshing and pogoing. Great night, and a great concert!
Great vid and info! Buddy Holly is infectious and makes you smile every time. It truly is a #1 song in my heart!
Growing up in the '80s, I've seen just about every music video there is. I remember when MTV first hit the air. That said, this is one of the 10 greatest music videos ever. Maybe even top-3.
Like many people here of a certain age, my first introduction to this song, and Weezer as a band, was the video being included with Windows 95. They wanted to show off their embedded video player capabilities as part of this game changing operating system. Don't laugh, because back then Windows 95 actually WAS game changing.
I probably watched that video five hundred times. Loved the song, loved the groove and LOVED the video.
Great video as always

I'm more at the age where I first discovered Weezer through seeing videos like Island In The Sun and Keep Fishin' on TV and then I went back and got the Blue album and Pinkerton out from the library. Great band, really refreshing to see a bespectacled guy fronting a band at a time where many bands had showy frontmen parading around with their shirts off

Buddy Holly is my favorite 50s artist. Thanks for the variety of music in these videos.
Island In the Sun is my favorite Weezer song.
P.S. I am going to see the B52s Aug. 22 in Seattle. It is their farewell tour. I thought I better go if this is the last opportunity to see them. Like you said, we all need some fun music in these difficult times.

I would like to see more female fronted 90s music. Ones that hit, ones that didn’t and all that. I love the Breeders, LZ, Cranberries…

I expect that we’ll see episodes devoted to “Zombie” or “Linger” eventually 🤙✌️
Cocteau Twins would be nice.
I worked at an HMV before the Blue Album was released. DGC sent out a sampler, used to help record stores choose what stock to buy and how much. On that sampler was Jamie. I remember being so excited when I heard it and ordered a hundred albums for release day of the Blue Album. Nailed it!
How about do a video on the sensation that was Only Wanna Be With You from Hootie and the Blowfish? That song was EVERYWHERE! It had amazing and catchy lyrics, Darius at his beginning, and a good sound. Cracked Rear View as a whole deserves to be reviewed by you. PLEASE PROFESSOR OF ROCK!
I’m certain that we’ll get at least one video about Hootie and the Blowfish. That’ll be appointment viewing for me. My dentist will greet me warmly 🙃
Haha! It'd be great, but I think their bigger hit was Let Her Cry (though the whole album was packed with hits). I was at some yard sale and found it on cd, put it in my truck and just about cried when Hannah Jane came on. I don't know what it was, took me somewhere I didn't know I missed.
"Let Her Cry" is the best song from their debut
The more I watch your videos the more I appreciate not only your narrative abilities but your overall taste in music. I don’t like everything you like, but most of it 🤘
Ben Folds Five - The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner
Junior Senior - d-d-don't don't stop the beat
Both underrated albums IMO. I know Junior Senior is mostly known for being a 1 hit wonder, but their first album is pure sugary pop bliss!
Say it ain’t So is so dope and just loved that high pitch note towards the end 🙌
Hash Pipe was a one of a kind too! Excellent opening riff!
Definitely one of the coolest videos of the era. Great job as always, good Professor! 🤘🏻
Thank you for all your research..appreciated and you help me enjoy and appreciate music even more , especially that outside my generation of the 60s, 70s and 80s. I've learned that Weezer is cute serious!
Ha ha. Thanks Tracy. Good call!
You are so right!
Glad that we’re parts of the same community. I toast Adam’s episodes on The Kinks, The Beach Boys, and Zeppelin, for example, but I dig into content from the mid-80s onward 🍽🥢
I remember watching it in the basement. It was so cool seeing seeing Fonzie jamming to this song though it was just footage from the TV show. My brother had the album and he would play it non stop.
I was at a festival in Bonn, Germany, around the year 2000, and Ash were part of the line-up. They had been touring with Weezer and occasionally included Weezer covers in their set.
All day, there had been threats of thunderstorms, with clouds blackening the sky, and it actually did pour down pretty bad. But then Ash started to play Only in Dreams, and exactly in that moment, the clouds parted and the sun came out. I remember agreeing with God that day.
I still buy stuff from the 90s, music I never got around to getting back then. I bought this one a few years ago and regularly play it.
Have always loved this album. I know in some circles it's not cool to like Weezer, but as Rivers sang, "I don't care about that..." The Blue album is a phenomenal debut and has earned its status as a power pop/alternative classic. It's hard to believe that as of my writing this comment, the album is 28 years old and will soon celebrate 3 decades of gracing us with its presence. Weezer has a ton of great songs, but it all starts right here. I knew the moment I hear "Undone (the Sweater Song)" and then listened to the album and heard "My Name Is Jonas" that I was going to love this band. Thanks Professor for ANOTHER stellar episode! You never fail to deliver!!
I’ve loved Weezer ever since I first heard the Sweater song… and of Course Buddy Holly. Weezer may be the most resilient band of their era. Turns out a friend is Jason Cropper’s cousin. While they may have physically removed Cropper’s sonic contributions he is still given writing credits for some of the Blue Album’s songs.
one of my favorite albums of all time... loved it then, love it now.
It certainly helped that the Buddy Holly video was packaged with many Windows 95 PCs to showcase how video could be played on Windows. When my Mum bought our family computer it was the first time I'd heard of Weezer. Around the same time I managed to swag a copy of Spinal Tap on Video CD (not DVD) that had another disc of additional material cut into a whole other movie. Ah, the mid-late 90s 🤘🏼
The video for "Buddy Holly" is brilliant and entertaining like no other video 😁
Blue album is such a fantastic album - so many great songs packed into one disc
I remember people ripping on weezer for some songs, never heard anyone really rip on this song. No wonder it did well, a perfectionist singer songwriter and Ric Ocasek producing it.
Produced by a member of the Cars! Ain’t that awesome?
I think Material Issue - International Pop Overthrow is one of my favorite albums from that time. A couple years before Weezers blue album, but both of them are 2 of my favorites from the time period.
"🎵🎶But you know I'm yours, and I know you're mine, and that's for all of time🎶🎵"
This song, combined with the Happy Days video, made my whole 8th grade year!
Ha ha. So very good! Great memories!
Happy Days was one of my mom’s favorites growing up!
The real winner in this video is the awesome Cheap Trick T that POR is sporting. Nice threads.
Thank you. One of the best band logos in history in my estimation.
@@ProfessorofRock Also one of the best bands period !
Love that tee.
It was something unexpected for '94 but it was great! over the top... nostalgic for the 70s, 80s & 50's it made me check out the rest of their music. Love it!
Dang,Professor. You brought it,put it on the table, opened it up, and served it out nice and neat. I do like the way that you and your team do this. I would recommend anyone watching this video to watch the WEEZER and WEIRD AL version of Toto's AFRICA after you're done with this one. Great job again, five gold stars and some horns ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🤘
Weezer were the first band I saw at any festival at Reading 96 but the amazing thing was "Buddy Holly " was the first song I ever crowd surfed to. They wanted the crowd to chuck mud at them so they could teach the English crowd how to play baseball, and we gladly obliged. Great band memorable gig 👌
Ever since I subbed to you I've had to step up my hat game XD
I was well into my 20's by the time Weezer's debut album came out, but it was one of my favorite albums of the first half of the '90s.
Fun-ish fact: The blue album was the first of six self-titled albums Weezer would record.
the video for this song is one of the best of all time!
I loved this album when I came out and remember the video coming with Windows 95. "Undone (The Sweater Song)" as a reply to Meryn Cadell's "The Sweater" was brilliant.
In '94 I had graduated the year before and I had a core group of friends that we did everything together. I remember going over to Jimmy's house and watching MTV, and though Say It Ain't So is my song from the blue album, this video was so great. What a time musically, I was listening to everything from Weezer to Soundgarden to Led Zeppelin to Prodigy to Ministry. There were so many new bands and genres to discover. Glad Weezer was one of them.
Buddy holly a fun retro song. What struck me about this song aside from the words taking me back to a simple time is how it is pop with a harder edge. It plays into 3 camps and yet belongs to none of them fully.
