- Hello and welcome everyone !
This Video is all about making up a reusable template using scrap to drill out adjustable shelf holes.
I only use a handfull of simple handtools - Combination square / bradle / tape measure / pencil / 5mm wood drill bit / combination drill and some scrap sheet material.
For the slots (which are not absolutely necessary) I used a makita trimmer router and a 10mm flute cutter.
I use these template for all my work and re use the many times making them very handy!.

The other simple way to do slots for pins under your shelves is to stack two shelves together back to back and drill a 6mm hole on your 30mm mark between them using a depth stop on your drill bit. This is how I do it on my DIY projects and it works great. No need for a router too. Thanks for great video!

Use pins with built in flat piece on the end to support the shelf, no need to cut out for the pins if you use these kinds of pins. Some have a hole cut to put a screw into the shelf through the pin to stabilize them.
Set them in 37mm and do 32mm spaced holes then your Blum hinge plates will fit in the holes too
I looked at jigs to buy but couldn't justify it either. Your design worked perfectly, thanks!

I've got the kreg jig - it's ok but the stepped drill bit that comes with it does not like MFC at all!

Assuming you are still doing this the same way in 2021, might I offer an adjustment that might save some time and marking out? Might just be me chatting nonsense of course!
For your template, would drilling 6 or 7mm holes and then drilling your actual 5mm holes with a self centring bit not make the templates last a lot longer, saving you the faff of making new ones? The drill bit itself would never actually touch the sides of the hole meaning it won't get worn and enlarge. The self centering bit might wear the hole out, but it would be wearing it out from the top down, so it would have to wear all the way through 6mm of birch ply before needing replacement, if ever.
For routing the notches, given that you (appear) to always route them 30mm from the edge as thats where the pins will be, rather than setting your fence up for it to touch the side of the shelf and have to eyeball the router centreline on your pencil marking, could you not run your router fence along the front and back faces of the shelf and just pop a mark on the fence to let you know when to stop routing once its lined up with the edge of the board. You'd literally not need to do any marking up for each shelf that way. I think. Assuming I've even made sense.
I literally clicked the video as I need to cut shelf pin holes for the first time and thought "this is great info, I'll do it just like he does it" and then my lightbulb went off and I thought it only kind to share the ideas in case they are actually useful.
I'd recommend investing in the festool LR32 system an just keep a rail an router set up. If your doing adjustable shelving often.

Yes, I used to use an 8mm flute cutter and it got blunt and only had a 10mm in the cupboard so stuck that in the trimmer.
8mm would give you a slightly better fit I guess 👍👍

Tbh ive never had problems where the pins don't fit. Maybe ever so slightly tighter but always go in with a little tap, so I've never had to clean them out 👍👍

Are those Shelf bits holders flat on top to receive the shelf or best get rounded 🤔
Hi, it works either way. The shelf may have very slightly less movement on the pegs if they were flat rather than round, but the difference is minimal. 👍👍

I'm not tight, but the idea of spending £30 to £70 on a shelf pin drilling guide seems ridiculous to me. Of course, if you're doing it for a living, just go out there and buy one off the shelf along with your Festool Domino. But for the occasional project...well. Thanks for sharing.👍

Why not just use a strip of pegboard, no measuring, one and done.
Good idea, though im not sure the thickness and durability of pegboard? also the hole distances and if they vary?
Thank you for the tuition on making templates. You might like to standardise the measurements by using the system 32 methodology, it is a useful standard if incorporating shelf pins, hinges and draws as Blum, Hafele etc manufacture to fit.
