The siren goes off periodically. It's when the native Morlocks come out of the caves around town and capture some of you tourist "Eloi," and take you back to their caves. The tourist brochures say that their the lucky chosen Eloi are the guests of honor at a huge feast. Then it says you are given pocket fulls of gold and sent back to your ship.😮

I just came back last Saturday from my Third Expedition Cruise to Greenland. After seeing the huge lineups to get on the tender, I am so happy that I only take Expedition cruises on small ships. On my ship there were 138 passengers and 40 Expedition staff, so it only take a little over 40 minutes for all the passengers to get to shore by zodiac *which hold 10 passengers each". And never had to wait more than 5 minutes to get a zodiac to get us back to the ship. By the way, Nanortalik means "Place of the Polar Bears". We always had polar bear guards with us on the Greenland excursions, and were told if you heard alarms ringing, it meant that a guard saw a polar bear come too close, and we should make our way IMMEDIATELY to the zodiacs to go back to the ship.

Tony, it looks like your fall wasn’t bad. Thank heavens. I fell on a path to see hexagonal basalt columns and a sort of cave, on the Iceland coast, and the volcanic gravel ripped up the fabric of my pants and cut my knee pretty badly. My guide had to get out her first aid kit and my walking was screwed up for the rest of the trip (which included Greenland.) I’m so glad you and Don got here, though. It’s amazing.

few possible reasons for the siren in Greenland
    1. *(you kind of mentioned it) when a large section of ice is released, some towns nearer to the glacier might get a Tsunami warning just in case (with most, it kind of effects you only if you are very near the water, like do not stand on the beach if it sounds)
    2. the siren is from the local fish factory, a warning when a heavy cargo palette is being transported over the docking area/car-park... again telling people to keep out of a certain area.
    3. in some towns the general alarm is sounded for exactly 60 seconds to mark midday (or another pre-determined hour)... this is what your case sounded like to me.
    4. obviously, towns that have bases also can sound Air-Raid sirens if say Russian airplanes are spotted... this does occasionally happen in North-East Greenland, because you get these "NATO trolling-missions" from squadrons based on Taimyr and Novaya-Zemlya.

    Hey Tony,
Hope you did not get hurt when you fell. I left a comment on Don's channel, when you guys were taking about excursions in Greenland. The costs of excursions are getting out of hand. I know you take a lot of excursions, mentioning the prices on future cruises, would be helpful. You spoke about them in Greenland and I thought it was a good idea. With the high costs of cruising, air flight from upstate NY, mandatory service charges, a night in a hotel, sometimes we forgo excursions for budgetary reasons. I prefer to use ship excursions for the safety factor, but some of the prices are just ridiculous. I have been enjoying your trip, stay safe.
