  • The curious case of Pokemon Box Ruby & Sapphire for the Nintendo GameCube has always been an interesting thing to watch. Why is this Pokemon Game, that really isn't even a game, as rare as it is and worth so much? Today, let's take a look into the history of Pokemon Box Ruby & Sapphire and find out how it became as scarce as it is!

I wouldn’t part with it to begin with, but I’d still like to know where my big box for it went. My copy is “used” anyway because I played it as a kid and used one of the special memory card stickers on the memory card.
I spent hours rearranging trophies in that game. 😂

So here's the other thing about these Pokemon Box games (that really should be kicking the price down but what do I know):
Every one of these Pokemon "bonus eggs" you can get in Box are either pointless or worthless.
-Swablu with False Swipe: So many Pokemon learn False Swipe, it's not a competitive move at all. Heck, Altaria isn't as good as it wants to be, being a defensive Dragon/Flying type (or Dragon/Fairy in gen 6 and 7 as Mega Altaria).
-Zigzagoon with Extremespeed: This has been made one of its egg moves since at least gen 7 in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, so all you need to do is breed a female Zigzagoon with a male Arcanine or Lucario with Extreme Speed and you're golden.
-Skitty with Pay Day: This is pointless as, like with False Swipe, Pay Day has no competitive value and instead is a great way to increase in-game currency payout. Usually known by Meowth and Persian, and even worse, it's a TM in the Sword/Shield games. Now, Skitty isn't in Sword & Shield, but it IS available in Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl. But the less I talk about that game, the less my blood pressure skyrockets.
-Pichu with Surf: As novel as this is and how much of a legacy the "Surfing Pikachu" is in every generation, therein lies the rub; there are ways to get it in nearly every generation, but not with the Surf HM. In the 4th generation, you could use that Pokewalker to go to Yellow Forest, teeming with Pikachus with Surf and Fly you could occasionally catch. Sadly, any Pokemon with HM moves could not be transferred up without forgetting them through a Move Deleter. But this all changed with Sword & Shield, where they finally said "the heck with it" and let Pikachu use Surf as a TM (TR technically). And yes, this does in fact mean that Pichu can learn Surf in the same way, not just Pikachu.

      @richardortega6364 Год назад +3

@@TheBeretTalks so Pokémon like Swablu, this particular can pick up the move false swipe.. a move that can’t be learn in the newer games. Many collectors would trade ya there army of shinies for that. Also skitty is another rare Pokémon. Now Zigazagoon would been in that list however he manages to learn extremespeed in Pokémon sun & moon through breeding. There no special symbol to tell if the pokemon came from pokemon box but if someone saw the summary that collector will know that specific pokemon isn’t some basic Pokémon

@@richardortega6364 Thank you so much for the information. It would be nice that Pokémon Home could be updated in its code to be able to tell the game origin in the case of Pokémon out of the main line.

I remember getting those Pokemon eggs and being so confused; I think I still have that Extremespeed Zigzagoon sitting around on our Pokemon Ruby cartridge somewhere.

~8 years ago I was trying to find a cheap version of Pokemon Box while trying to get a pokemon with every ribbon on it.
There's an obscure glitch with Pokemon Box's Adventure Mode that lets you bypass the save check at the Ruby/Sapphire battle tower, so if you happen to lose, you could reset the game without having to completely restart the tower from round 0, which would have helped immensily for getting those tower ribbons since my ribbon master pokemon was an unevolved eevee.

In the UK/EU, you could scratch off and redeeming codes found on vouchers found inside Nintendo hardware and software boxes from the GameCube/GBA era all the way until the Wii I believe. You could save the "points" accumulated on these vouchers (which varied in value depending on if you bought a console or a game) via the "Stars Catalogue". It would feature digital things like ringtones and wallpapers mostly but on occasion would post physical trinkets to your home for "Stars". Pokémon Box was such an exclusive item here. The game also came bundled with a free grey memory card, presumably to store the huge file size Pokémon Box actually needs for all the data.
I still have my copy from 2004 and while playing Ruby/Sapphire on your TV with the GBA link was fun but if your GBA/GameCube link cable was at all damaged the game would immediately boot back to the main menu.

Lol, not long ago I got back into my old Pokemon games and remembered Pokemon Box so I tried to find it and holy cow is it expensive. Same thing goes for XD: Gale of Darkness, as I never got that back then and kinda wanted to play through Colosseum again and then XD

Yes, I have the included save cartridge thingy (that’s a technical term), too.

Getting a copy of Pokemon Box was at least double the price even a year or so after they stopped selling it new. I finally got a copy for around 80 used. It's insane how much it's gone up now and to think I was annoyed I had to pay as much as I did back then.

I did not know this game existed, and honestly wouldn't bother forking out the dough to own it. I love pokémon games, but I've only ever been able to play a small handful mostly bought second hand or given as gifts. My pokémon journey started with Yellow when my parents gave me the special Pikachu edition Gameboy color, and after that a friend gifted me SoulSilver (which I never got to play outside an emulator because said "friend" stole it along with my PS2 and ALL of my PS2 games). My parents would also give me Pokémon Stadium for the N64, which I have fond memories of the minigames. A few years ago I picked up a DS, Black2 and Y from a gaming-focused second hand shop.
I must say, though... playing Yellow through Stadium was AWESOME, and I absolutely loved the fact that I could turn my TV into a giant Gameboy.

Oh god… I had Pokémon box with the cable, given to me by a friend who got it from his grandparents as a gift when they went on holiday to the US… he didn’t want it as it wasn’t an actual game and I didn’t know and I’m guessing he didn’t know what it was worth.. but I ended up throwing it away when we moved house years later! The disc, cable, memory card and box were all in great condition… I had a switch when I ended up throwing it away but I had had many hours of fun playing with it, even getting all the eggs… maybe I should have checked online what it was worth… lol

I had this game growing up, though I have no idea why or how we got it (I was 4 when it was released). I am almost certain I still have it, though between the belongings of myself and my brothers, it's probably in a box (hehe) somewhere, so I cannot confirm at this time that it is still in my possession. Learning about its value has made me interested in finding it, but I probably won't worry about it for the foreseeable future.

Every time I hear about the value of this game I freak out a bit it's sat on my shelf for almost 20 years now complete in box without much thought about it. I got it at the Pokemon Center by chance I wasn't even looking for it. I booted it up a few times to transfer Pokemon between FRLG and ruby and sapphire and maybe to play them on the TV but haven't touched it since. Maybe I should look to see if any Pokemon are sitting on the memory card.

Back in elementary school there was a kid in my class named Eric who claimed to have pokemon box and that you could use it to play ruby and sapphire with pokemon colosseum graphics and in full 3d. I basically told him he was full of it and that he'd never be able to provide any proof. It was obviously unrelated but he transferred schools the next week.
