I assume that you won't be cementing/gluing down the top shelf, as you will like need to get inside, eventually, to address any pile connection issues, etc. It should be heavy enough to just sit on top without fixing it there.

And with the microwave popcorn you get burned popcorn too. So that was nothing special. No worries, it had nothing to do with what you did.
