    Last year we spoke a lot about the new iCarly revival, but this year I wanted to wait to talk about all of season 2 for iCarly all at once. Has it improved from last season, where is the show heading and did it have focus? Let's take a look at season 2 of the iCarly revival!

    It helps that the actor playing Freddy was also the director of a majority of Season 2, so he likely got his own insight into how to improve his place on the show (like "Yeah, I'm going to be doing ALL this work, so there needs to be a better reason for my character being involved.")

      I am not surprised to know Nathan/Freddie when given the chance, could revise everything in a lot of these areas. He and Spencer should be the directors, especially with Jerry being a veteran form Drake and Josh. (and he the fact he was on Malcom in the Middle, and My Wife and Kids.)

      @@van8ryan that's definitely the role that was more widely publicised so it makes sense - and that's the career direction he has taken in recent years.
      At the end of the day a director on a multicam sitcom like this doesn't have a lot of say in the overall big picture, they come in for individual episodes and their job is to bring the script they are given to life and don't have a lot of control over the narrative of the story. It excites me that Nathan and Jerry are producers and Miranda is Executive Producer as it means they are involved in every step of the process, not just what happens on set while filming.

    What the original iCarly nailed was the incorporation of memorable, enjoyable side characters and the establishment of nuanced relationships. Nevel, Chuck, and even Lewbert were fleshed out in the original iCarly, set with their own backstories - they had families, friends, and (most importantly) goals. Unlike the side characters of the iCarly revival, these rounded characters returned in the following seasons. The revival is guilty of introducing flat characters (such as Wes, Beau, Dutch, and Maeve) only to write them out later. The heart of the original iCarly was the connection between its characters. Sure, in the real world, people come and go, but that doesn't mean that every side character should.

    • @spungle6426
      @spungle6426 2 года назад +19

      I agree!! I feel like the problem is that it is too focused on a small amount of locations. In the OG, the characters would go to school so they would see in person responses to their show with recurring side characters that we could recognise. Now, they all pretty much work from home so we're limited to a few locations with the same people. Characters like Nevel, Chuck and Lewbert are just cameos for the reboot. Aside from Pearl, there aren't many side characters, and she's really underdeveloped as it is. Mrs Benson is the only recurring side character (and her appearances are always great).

    I see the potential this show has, with Carly rise again to stardom once more but in a modern influencer style writes itself! -but it didn’t happen. Carly getting canceled in S2 premiere, only to be a one-off episode… consequences from Lewberts court episode-only for Spencer to throw money at the problem. I’ve taken the show as what it is, a comfort sitcom show:) simply nice to revisit these old characters from my childhood.

    I think the first 2 seasons have made the revival somewhat interesting so far, and even though there haven't been any announcements yet i'm hoping for a season 3. anyway i will admit that while i'm enjoying the revival so far there are some things that could've been done better.

    • @TheScarletSlayer
      @TheScarletSlayer 2 года назад +7

      I don't think there should be a revival at all. The original iCarly wrapped up nicely and left the people with an ever lasting sense of nostalgia whenever looking back on it.
      You can't miss something if it's not gone so for it to arrive once again what's the incentive to care at all if what you loved can be so easily replaced.
      I grew up with iCarly and often looked back on it remembering the simpler days but now that there's a reboot it just leaves me with a cheap feeling.

      I think it would have been better if Carly had to build it back up from 0, rather than somehow iCarly just instantly still being popular despite it years of hiatus and cultural shift for the internet. Like if that was the plot itself underneath the comedy. Like the Social Network movie but with iCarly humor. If that was the plot, it would have been much more intersting, consistent and vastly improve on the original show.

    I absolutely love the improvements they made. But I still do think they should make the transition more interesting because the original used video editor UI for the transition which I find cool. They could modernize it just like the title card. Also, maybe this is just me but the lack of background music can make certain scenes feel too quiet, like when Carly tries to slingshot a fruit at a dummy (but ended up hitting Spencer instead). But overall it's just a feel good show.

    My main criticisms of the show:
    - The writing this season was a little too explanatory (I.e Someone randomly walks into a room and instantly starts explaining what the writers should present to us). I can see how it can be difficult though because it's a 20-24 minute show.
    - Laughtrack was mildly used too much or at the wrong points.
    -The pacing of this season felt rushed at points. (Best example is the Drag Queen/Political Debate/Melon Slingshot episode. The DQ portion should have been the A plot and the Political Debate should be the B, but Millicent was supposed to shine way more in the debate part than she did. They slick didn't need the Spencer/Carly plot, they could have assisted with the other plots).
    - They shot the load too early in season 1 by having everyone complete their campaign mode too early to me. Carly quickly got her numbers up after a couple of episodes, Harper went from barista to successful fashion designer in half a season, Spencer is excessively rich for no reason, Freddie went from IT help desk to the owner of a successful business quick as hell, and Millicent is basically super awesome with no real character flaw.
    - Side characters can be hit or miss (I.e Hit: Paul Miss: Kid at debate and Derek)
    My main praise of the show:
    - Josh Peck brought great energy to the show and they utilized him well. Good to see he's still in good form
    - Harper's character did indeed feel more natural this season and that paid off regularly throughout the episodes as JF said
    - Freddie actually had the best character arc this season and can make the argument that he's the MVP of the season
    - The web show didn't forcefully show us iCarly content like I feel last season did. Frankly, the show itself isn't as important as their 2007-2013 show was, but the behind the scenes stuff is what makes the episodes now (The lawsuit episode, the escape room episode, the influencer fight club episode, etc)
    - They truly casted 5 great main characters for the show and they play their roles well
    What I expect from Season 3:
    - Millicent starts becoming more of a teen and Freddie's relationship in that space
    - They limit the different romantic partners aspects of the show because now that everyone has had some form of romance, Freddie and Carly's should be the primary one.
    - ICarly to actually use more current tech and trends like JF also said
    - Carly becoming more of a rebel than her prior self. (She shows glimpses, but she always reverts back, she gotta fully make trait changes).
    - More Paul and less nostalgic characters because they basically reintroduced all the ones we were curious about except for Sam and Gibby already.
    Solid season and great video JF!

      I mean it makes sense why Carly was able to get her numbers back up so quickly, the web-show won a world record, a reward for best comedy in the Japan special, had guest like the Plain White T’s , One Direction and Michelle Obama, been on Jimmy Fallon, Carly did a charity boxing match with a MMA champion and has directed a music video along with a live stage performance all before graduating high school. So Carly deciding to start the show back up would draw in tons of people.

    Really amazing review overall! Personally I liked season 1 of the revival more than season 2. I did love seeing Josh Peck finally appear in this show but it was kind of weird to have 1 episode in the middle where he wasn’t in it even though he was only confirmed for 2 appearances. Having more of the focus on Freddie this time around was an added bonus. Still looking forward to season 3 but season 1 just felt more fresh and unique.

    For me Sam was the i for iCarly, without her the show needed a restructure so it could seriously resemble the old show with the adult edge, and we finally got it.

    I actually really enjoyed season 1. I didn't love it compared to the original (which you was partly responsible for me watching lol) but it's good! That said a few things ruined it a bit for me. Carly somehow can't find love....like REALLY...HOW!!! It's just too frustrating. Also Freddie's kid is a constant harasser. Also not enough iCarly internet stuff.

    • @GeteMachine
      @GeteMachine 2 года назад +3

      I didnt like it because of how forced it seemed, Carly just ends up doing dates with generic, teen models rather than developing real chemistry with characters on the show. I mean did she really need a love triangle with 2 guys who were barely on the show. And the fact that Freddie's character was always just a loser in the first season. I like that they fixed it by giving him something to actually focus on when he tried to start that app. They can play it off as post-divorce identity crisis I guess and Milicent not used to living with him full time. Season 1 justsemed to use a lot of the flaws in the later seasons of theoriginal show and it shown in why it didn't carry it for people.

  • @schris3
    @schris3 2 года назад +2

    8:30 Don't apologize, most of us know that Spencer is the Atlas that carries the show on his back, and I wouldn't mind if he becomes the main character and Carly the side character.

    While I enjoyed the first season of the revival, I do agree that season 2 was a big improvement. I think there was only one episode I really didn't care for --- but otherwise I thought it was great. I feel like a lot more of the jokes landed with me than they did in the first season. Plus the actor chemistry, especially with the new characters, seemed a lot more fluid and natural. It was nice to see more meaningful character development and plot progression as well.

    I personally really loved season 1 I feel like it did some pretty good set up while being a bit drawn out and slow and season 2s finale brought my favorite episode of the entire franchise. So I look forward to season 3 highly. I just hope like the og they keep this upward improvement. Season 1 and 2 of the og feel similar as they felt slow with specific elements and season 3 and 4 really built up that magic so I hope season 3 of this verison of icarly brings the magic. It's also nice to hear that the cast and writers have discussed how they're ready to take these stories take off in the next season which seems super promising.

    I really really hope season 3 will be released. It was definitely on the up during season 2. I honestly love Harper as a character that isn't confined by the nostalgia driven lead cast. Millicent for what it's worth is more Sams replacement than Harper but being Freddie's daughter means she COULD have a meaningful plot line.

    Season three I haven’t seen two yet but as you said it’s kinda setting up Carly and Freddie’s relationship so if a season three maybe a mixture of focusing On the channel and there romance maybe

  • @Angi3_6
    @Angi3_6 2 года назад +4

    I feel like they were trying to recreate the same vibes of Sam and Freddie with him and Millicent without taking the type of relationship they have into account. The relationship of two peers is very different from parent/child. It left a bad taste in my mouth and made me hesitant to finish the first season.
    Sam and Freddie wouldn’t and shouldn’t have the same exact relationship they had as children.

  • @GeteMachine
    @GeteMachine 2 года назад +2

    It definitely addressed the issue I had with the show. Where I really didn't care about the string of dates Carly had or the pretty superficial love triangles but I applaud that Freddie and Pearl felt more in tone with how relationships were portrayed in the original than any of Carly's that came off half-backed, shallow and lacked humor. While Freddie realizes his relationship's traction with Pearl, but it isnt the main focus of his character. It feels like it more naturally happens. So I agree from this retrospect that the writing is significantly better this time around.

    It's interesting to see the comment section here has a majority opinion that season 2 is better, as other spaces on the internet I've seen have been a lot more mixed, with many who prefer season 1.
    Personally I like both for different reasons, my only complaint for season 2 is that it didn't have bigger overall arcs across the season like the first did. But the overall feel of this season was definitely more confident.
    I hope season 3 has the same confidence as season 2 but brings back the ever so slightly serialised structure season 1 had.
