That fuel solenoid is case grounded and has a pull and a hold circuit!
That means it takes a two powers to get the solenoid to come on
One is momentary just when cranking
Wish trucks were still slowed to have the old school mechanical injection from the 90s.
Sometimes, it's really nice just to go back to watching someone do the complete basics and still learn something new! 👌👌👌
Good explanation here Rich. Now you'll get all the guys that have their solenoid working but their glow plug relay failed and the cold-blooded thing won't start, so they are going to comment and say just cranks and makes white smoke. So next you're gonna have to make a how to jump your glow plugs right to the battery count to 10 and then start your mower video. Haha
And then run a switch to the cab… and you can even run a light to it.
@@wobblysauce yes. But the average homeowner that has to mow the grass before their cocktail party doesn't have that capability lol.
On a kubota, the shut off solenoid get's it's ground through the engine block - The two wires going to it is a positive pull function and the other is a positive holding function! Common mistake if you don't work with kubota engines!
Came to the comments looking for this, it caught me out the first time+
The little sound an electrical connector makes when it clicks into the sensor or whatever device it’s intended for is so satisfying to me.
"Because I'm Martha Stewart, I have another one" 😂
He can't be Martha... He doesn't have a felony conviction...😂
@@weirddudewithabeard LMFAO
From google, I see she is a business woman.
But is that a reference to something she said because I didn't get it.
But I can put two and two together that as a person of business, she is prepared.
Rich isn't like Martha Stewart, he isn't nearly dirty enough. Rich probably has never even been to club fed.
@@madcat4563 its a reference to the style of cooking shows Martha Stewart did (still does?) Where she preps the food to be cooked, and when it's finally ready to go in the oven, they immediately bring out an identical meal that was already fully cooked, for the sake of air time.
It was a joke about already having the new part he needed on hand.
On the topic - I get why they'd do it, (esp if it's live), but it just seemed weird and bogus to do a switcheroo at the end. I remember my mom used to watch some '15 min meals' show, and she would always point out that all the ingredients were already cleaned/cut/measured/layed out ahead of time. It's bs, that's half the job they just skipped. W/e lol.
I have a 3 cylinder diesel kabuto t1600 lawn tractor. Ill never go back to a gas lawn tractor again if I can help it. so much better on fuel and way more power.
Great vid brother, this is the kind of stuff I’m trying to teach my 17 year old son. It’s just a machine, there’s no magic going on, just think about it. 👍
I remember that one of my Uncle's had a tractor with that cable to the fuel shut-off from factory. Big orange knob with "PULL TO STOP" on it.
I have a small Kubota tractor with the 3-cyl diesel. 20 years old and lots of hours. It has never broken. Always starts and runs fine. Great little engines!
Well done Rich. Now, get moving on that Caddy back there!
Wish this was posted 1 year ago, cat 3306 in the fishing boat I run shut off and we couldnt figure out why for a couple hours...eventually pulled that solenoid and made it back to the dock and shut it off by putting a screwdriver in the hole. Mint video as always.
Wish I’d seen this when I was working on sailboats. I concur with everything said here…
Love the simple back to basics teachings.👍🏻😛 🇨🇦
Did that to a 3304 cat generator last week, most reefers use the same thing
Good ol Kubotas, the 7.3 idi's arch nemesis.
Side note - Only dealerships that don't rip you off are the ones that have a guard cat(s) roaming around the building.
It would be awesome if you guys could do an OM606 swap sometimes in the future. Would love to see how you would it, but ofc for the main channel. It is sad that it is so expensive dough. Would not need massive hp gains, maybe see what can be achieved on a rather small budget and put in an US produced car, like an s10 or Buick of some sorts(the same body style as what the GNX has). Thanks for the video and God bless from Norway.
Got my vote!! Please make it happen!
Good way to ruin a g body
These little Kubota mechanical diesel engines are absolutely bulletproof. Great troubleshooting tip!
This used to be all there was to diagnosing diesel engines, but NOOO, that was way too easy! Who wants that?!
Sorry rich. Most Kubota shut off solenoids arent ground and power. One of the wires is ignition power, the other is "pull in", aka current only when the starter is cranking. I do tech support for Kubota engines, and this is the most common misconception with these engines. Every one thinks these two wires are power and ground because they have two wires, but thats not usually correct
no ur wrong
Idk man. He tested it w\ a test light & switched neg\pos to verify each wire. If one was ignition power, why was it negative when tested? 🤔🤷♂️🤦♂️🔧🛠️🔩📏⚠️
@@tdotw77 because the "ground" is connected to the starter windings. It will test as a ground, even though it functions as a positive voltage source to pull in the coil.
@@bernlew977 nope, I'm 100% right. Its literally my whole career to know Kubota engines.
I don’t know either way but sure would like to know who’s right on it.
Rich used a test light, seems like it legit test to me .
Ran into that on a deutz running a drill rig on a truck. It was also tied into all the emergency safety shutoffs whiskers and buttons.
90% of Thermokings that came in with a "no start" had this problem XD
what a great instructional video. great for the beginner in the diesel work
great video, love when a fix is shown and also a short term work around,
Another great video, thanks for posting!
Awesome, clear, concise explanation of how these work together. Really great short video!
Love the super simple explanations. This would have been super helpful to see a few years ago when I was just getting my career started and didn't have a bunch of knowledge 😂. I feel like most videos about diesel engines and equipment just kind of dive right in because you're already supposed to at least have good knowledge of these systems beforehand, and can be tough to follow if you're not solid with your basics yet.
I think this vid in particular is for anyone with a small mechanical diesel that can use a quick fix, which is totally fine.
But, there's so many great vids on the basics already. If you want to learn about this stuff from scratch, thats on you to do first. I bet the majority of people that watch this channel already know the basics. I want the lesser known, but still relevant, technical details/techniques. Call me a nerd, but that's how i continue learning. Particularly new systems, or diagnostics, which kind of make or break you as a mechanic.
Sometimes half the battle is just knowing the correct terminology to use while searching for answers online. (Im not a pro mechanic, but work on a ton of vehicles/equipment.)
Huge difference between 'why wont my tractor start' and 'how to disable a fuel shutoff solenoid'. For example, im not sure that's exactly what its called. But itll at least get you in the right direction faster.
@@ctdieselnut for me specifically, these basic explanations help a lot when it comes to engines. As a mechanic, so far I've only worked on fleets of trucks, therefore I have very little experiences with engine performance, yet I have advanced knowledge about hydraulics, electrical, driveline, steering/suspension, and general heavy equipment stuff, since we generally outsource engine work and only worry about the rest of the truck.
Another great video
Thanks for the info.
Great video. Simple is sometimes better
Thank Goodness I got a "choke" cable on my Deutz diesel. Key switch is for starting and energizing the lift safety.
nice video, one note you need compression as well to the fuel for it run.
D'boss... I learn more from you and Vice Grip in five mins
great tip rich
Did this on an apu. I've already had fuel shut off solenoids stuck on also on apu engines. I was so confused when that happened lol!
Informative. Cheers
Good info. Is there a way to get more power out of that engine?
Good to know! Now to find a cheap one for sale that doesn't run....
Nice! Good to know
Don't some of those solenoids ground through the body and have 2 powers?
Mine (Mitsubishi engine) has two powers and a ground.
@@brianfelmlee8804 right, one power initiates the solenoid, the second keeps it in place.
Lots of times when its a no start, I turn on the switch and then plug and unplug the switch and listen for the clicking sound of a magnet pulling on the switch and making a good connection.. also some need power to make it operate...
C'mon we want to see if it works. Get out there on the driving range and do some mowing Happy Madison style. Good info about that solenoid, thank you.
Best regards from Indiana, USA.
Yanmar is similar except 3 wires to the solenoid and no mechanical shutoff that I’ve found. I’ve learned the third wire is hot with the key in the start position, and seems to “pull in” the plunger, and then the hot with key on only generates enough magnetism to hold the plunger/armature, but not pull it in.
Let's git to that boat Rich
Exactly the same as a few of the smaller perkins machines
I have one of these. Kubota g5200 Excellent mower
Good stuf, those little Kubota engines you find everywhere.
hello dghd it's is randy and i like yours video is cool thanks friends randy
I would love to find a small kubota diesel mower.
Man that was great
Great video. What's up with the Cadillac in the background?
Kinda did the same on my ex-Dodge P pump 12 valve…
yup, first thing i'd replace when a light tower or genset came into the shop not running, 99% of the time it fixed the problem, the other 1% was faulty positive air shutoffs.
Can you show how to easily improve power on small Kubota/Yanmar engines? Often the same engine makes 15 to 24 or 20 to 30 hp. Timing, Shims, Plungers etc.?
Yep, my dad ended up in the drain at the bottom of the driveway with the running Kubota ride on mower upside-down on top of him. Don't disable safeties.
(Don't worry, he was ok. Apart from all the cancer, heart disease, diabetes, kidney failure and a stroke).
But I don’t want to cut my grass. I’d rather put it off till the parts come in. 😂
“It’s broken, wait for parts.” “Yeah I can rig it up, but when ur lazy it’s annoying.”
Obviously, this is the sensible route to take my friend!
in general on that machine yes. but there are sooooo many configurations just on kubotas let alone any one else this will only work for some. be carefull with those sollenoids there are so many variations 1 wire 2 wire 3wire internally grounded externally grounded energised to pull in energised to push out some with pull in windings and hold windings some just pull in. you can instantly ruin a good sollenoid hooking it up wrong
Nice👍🇺🇸
We have a ventrac 4500 at work that won’t shut off. The solenoid works when we bench test it, but it’s not getting power in the machine. Tried swapping the TCU computer but still doesn’t work. So I had to run a pull cord to shut it off. I have continuity through the wire from the connector to the computer and no continuity from ground to the wire. So it must be somewhere before the computer. Not looking forward to diagnosing it, I’m not a fan of electrical harness troubleshooting.
Fixing reel mowers, geez, do you live next to a golf course or somthin?
cool
Mad
There it is again what's that black caddie doing?
Don’t forget to check air filters I’ve seen them so full of dirt the engine would start and die being starved of air….
What test light are you using?
For real, I have not found a good one.
Better than giving the money to pay for Bergs new building!
The super funny thing about my kubota g1800 riding mower, she has to juice the solenoid to shut off. this is accomplished by a $400 computer. Why, oh why, kubota, did you not just make it juice to run instead of juice to kill? I took an old choke cable and mounted it in the dash, now i have manual shut off lmao. Also, the deck design on this thing is RIDICULOUS. There's no lateral support, only two arms from the front, so nothing to keep the deck torking side to side. Wears out all the linkages and with kubota, every "thing" is at least 100. $300 if there's a weld...
😎👍
Where's the lowboy??
Security Torx! That’s just wrong!
Maybe this is why my 12 valve wont start
Didn’t work, mainly because I don’t have a diesel mower
I have a team of engineers working to verify your comment, and at the risk of posting incorrect information, I am going to go ahead and agree with your findings.
Soooo where’s the tamper proof cap to turn the fuel up on said engine? 😂
And if your diesel is running…than you better go catch it

Diesel Class 101. Sit down shut up hold on.

I'm annoyed by the thumbnail, shows a small homeowner ride one mower with a diesel and got excited. Can I request a 10hp china diesel swapped 42" ride on mower video?
Mine is all mechanical so that won't work.
Still can work around just different process
@@austinwilbanks5919 😅😅It's not even anywhere the same. The throttle valve shuts it down.
Right which means you will never have this problem to begin with so none of this even applies loo
@@johnscott2849 I have the mechanical version, can confirm. Pull a red mechanical knob to shut down, push in to run. Mine’s a 2 cylinder kubota like the one in the thumbnail likely is but the actual machine being worked on isn’t
@@Adam_Poirier If it doesn't start which is what his title claims. I just pointed out it won't work on mine.
I already know the problem... _Ain't got no gas in it..._
😁
you need a bigger garage lol
These small diesel engines cost more than a whole tractor. They are STUPID on the used market.
