Kevin is a very likeable guy that obviously has a lot of seat time and tooling around as farmers do. Good chemistry between him and Rich. It's never boring.
Honestly these videos have made me respect farmers even more. You have to be a damn good tractor mechanic to be a farmer it seems. Also Kevin is just the epitome of a do-it-yourself farmer who fixes anything and everything on his farm and isn’t afraid to tear apart anything even if he’s never done it before. I admire anybody who’s not afraid to tear something completely apart even though they’ve never done it before. I’m sure not all farmers these days can fix their own stuff like he does.
I know you're kidding, but honestly, as long as it makes sense having two tractors obviously haha, it's really nice having two of the same tractor for this reason regardless of brand. We have 3 sets of the same tractors and this has came in handy many many many times haha. Although, Deere guys don't know how to work on them and just call the dealer anyways right? Haha just kidding
Thank you guys for showing the troubleshooting steps, most people wouldn't go to the effort and show it. Kevin and rich have great chemistry and make great videos together.
Can’t explain how enjoyable I find Kevin’s videos. Seems like such a solid, salt of the earth guy who always seems to be in a great mood no matter what he’s dealing with
Love this stuff with Kevin. Such a good friend and awesome dude. These two guys are lucky to have each other to help when something takes two heads and four hands to suss out and get working again. Kevin reminds me of a friend that moved to Brazil because he needed to find his purpose and couldn't find it on the left coast of the US. Excellent work. Great mentoring.
that gasket remover is good stuff. getting high, butterflies falling off the ceiling. they don't sell that stuff anymore. you guys crack me up. that was funny.
Always good to see Kevin teaching Rich new skills 😂 And the honesty of the channel rather than just editing it so stuff works the "first" time Nice one guys 👍
Quick tip for a gasket scraper is to flatten the end of a piece of household plumbing copper pipe, work harden it a bit then put an edge on it. Comes with handle installed unless you are really dumb or tight.... Brilliant for aluminium faces as it can`t "nick" like a steel scraper can = )
Love the kevin content, he farms with similar machinery to us. Keep the fan belt adjusted, that effects the signal in the w wire that effects the pto too
Let's all agree that Rich and his team have nailed the videography. These are beautiful videos. I'm never rebuilding a tractor PTO gearbox but damn, it looks good on video. And I love the insight to the life of a farmer. God Bless ever one of them.
Great to see a new vid with Kevin and what he's up to :) And also some nice good to know information on top is quite nice :) Hope we will see more videos from Kevin's shop soon :)
i am impressed by kevin. All farmers i know do not fix there own things. they dont know how and also many does not know how to maintin the equipment. how does kevin have time to be a farmer on full time aswell as mechanic parttime?
I can't name-drop the brand but the 3-minute oven cleaner that comes in the yellow can does a damn good job as a gasket & very hard carbon stripper in place of the stuff you can't get anymore, garbage literally just falls right off metal. I keep 2 or 3 cans of that stuff on hand at all times. Total time saver, great tool to have around. Has a ton of sodium hydroxide in it so wear gloves and a mask so it doesn't gag you out of the shop
Man i used to run three-point stop grinders 20 years ago and I would use the large barrel type on my case Tractor , I broke the PTO shaft off inside the tractor twice after that I changed to John Deere, done the same thing. Then about 15 years ago I just went and bought a Vermeer sc60tx that machine today which I purchased new has 5000 and something hours on it other than a few gearboxes and general maintenance it's been pretty trouble Free.
According to the MSDS I found, the main ingredients in the CRC Gasket Kleen are acetone, methylpyrrolidin (another type of solvent) and liquefied petroleum gas (propane). You're probably familiar with acetone and it can be found in most hardware stores. The Gasket Kleen looked similar to the foamy oven cleaners. That stickiness might be the advantage it has over straight acetone. I wonder if the gel type furniture strippers would work the same, since acetone and toluene are also the main ingredients in the premium brands.
When we measure precision part from a mill or lathe we let them cool down and then measure them it’s amazing what heat or cold will do to change it a 100 thousands in a part
1-methylpyrrolidin-2-one seems to be the active ingredient in gasket remover. It is one of those really aggressive solvents that dissolves a variety of plastics. The CRC version is only about 25% active ingredient, if there was a better version it probably had more.
edit: 24:42 contact cleaner for electric cabinets, the gel type that you're supposed to use with a brush will work just fine for that. 23:52 silicone's good, but only when applied by someone who doesn't think you're supposed to use the whole tube of silicone for a 10x10cm gasket. Rolled on sparingly, just enough to make an uniform layer. In typography they have these hard durometer rubber rollers with a checkered surface (for application of paint), they're perfect for silicone. You get a nice clean coat on all your surfaces, let it flash just a little bit, snug it in place, then after it's cured you tighten it and you're set. Like i said, it's not the item, it's the one using it that's the problem. Usually the same person who buys two tubes of silicone because he thinks he might not have enough for a transmission pan is the same person who thinks home foam is a structural repair, is more likely to weld an old box wrench over the crack in their truck frame and has, at least once, used a wood screw with a rubber washer to plug his leaky fuel tank. In this field of operation, we've all met "this" guy. We know who "he" is and how things are ""ok"" under his eye. Joe Average the " " " mechanic " " ", with his catch phrase "that'll do'er".
I always thought more splines meant stronger but Kevin said bigger splines meant stronger. Also , can't you stand up and stretch your legs while driving(seat sensor) without pto shutting off?
these bent metal PTO shafts will ever so slightly develop a twist that begins to un-screw and push the shaft longer and it can cause impacting wear on the pins if you have a universal joint in the mix
Machinery with massive power...needs a series of interlocks , limits , stop /go , make /break controls ...and sevdral power paths are used at once... Oh my
Shout out to Kevin for being true farmer! Not like ones a.k.a big farmers that buying new tractors every year with government subsidies and crying that they don't have enough money in their pockets while trying to push out of business small farmers
How come north America still uses the standard 1960s style lifting arms which are such a pain to hook up to implements, and not moved over to the euro style lifting arms with the hooks
@@RuralMidwest I know that but the hassle I see many farmers on youtube doing nothing but complaining when mounting/dismounting snow blowers and other small implements. The gasket stripper product is a mix of methanol, xylene and dichloromethane (dcm). so you can probably get away with a dcm paint stripper if you can still find it, or straight dcm from a solvent supplier
Oh great, my wife gets her fix of Kevin :-) . she'll be happy for at least a week lol . I'll make sure I never buy an older version of the Case lol, doing pins on older design be a bit like being a Punch and Judy puppet master .
Why don't you have pins made from better material to prevent that failure from occuring. I would machine up dowel pins from some inconel 718 or some 300m.
24:30 I know it's a pain in the ass, but you guys seriously need to wear gloves with that stuff (or any fluid really). You're going to develop nerve damage in the future, and that's a pain that can't be remedied with painkillers or a couple beers. It's agonizing. A good alternative I've found for gasket scraping is carbide scrapers. You have to be careful not to gouge the surface you're scraping, but that cuts through pretty much anything like butter.
Rich, tell Kevin to look for Loctite SF 790. Its the real deal gasket stripper. Stuff is dichloromethane which is stupid toxic, flammable, bad for the environment, and all that jazz. So they phased it out of must products, but it 100% works. 790 is still sold for use with aircraft. It's like $25 bucks a can in the US, but totally worth.
I love how he flaters himself that he has only 30 years old tractor and not 40. ps I know that for tractor and equipment we run a lot of them much longer.
Kevin is a very likeable guy that obviously has a lot of seat time and tooling around as farmers do. Good chemistry between him and Rich. It's never boring.
Love that Kevin does his own videos here on this channel. He's got some great humour and attitude.
And skill
"Oh yeah it's a good time!" 😂
More Kevin content is always welcome, farmers are the original "F that, I'll fix it myself" dudes. There ain't no time for downtime!

Great video Rich, good to see Kevin.

I could listen to Kevin talk all day.
Always enjoy seeing Kevin best part is he likes the Red stuff just like me!
Great to have agri tractor repair vid back … luv it
A few more on the way
4:13 Really a Welker Farms reference? Poor Leg Arms.
lol, I got that too😂
It's Fat Ass now.

Good to see some yellow tools like us common people use.

Pro tip unbolt hitch pot housing to refill backend much quicker than dribbling it in via fill tube. keep up the good work.
Love this farmer-fix content!
For anyone wondering, yes you can buy gasket stripper in the U.S. but it's expensive, $15-$20 a can depending on where you are
An air hammer works wonders on suborn lines. Good work
Same here in Ireland,we had Ambersil GS5 gasket stripper. It would take your skin off with the vapour only but it was some stuff.

I did this same job on my MX this past winter. Nice work Kevin.
Will an mx series rear cover fit on a 5000 series maxxum? If I was in there anyway and found an mx at the wrecker for cheap might as well upgrade no?
I think your t/s was great.nice job
I remember looking for gasket remover about five years ago, Not available in Canada but for sale in the US.
Looks like you have to drive to an Oreilly parts in Michigan to get that CRC Gasket Remover...
Yes to the tyre change...
At 1:37 The ear hair from the camera is getting a little on the long side. It's reminding me of my grandfather...
It's zip tied up now, should be better
Thank you for the video very helpful!! Could you tell me the torque spec for the PTO clutch bolt?
Good day fellows from Kitchener Waterloo. Is that true leaving pto on all time does not worn out clutch?
Thanks nice video.
I always thought more splines meant stronger but Kevin said bigger splines meant stronger. Also , can't you stand up and stretch your legs while driving(seat sensor) without pto shutting off?
Ya just can't start it. It would be useless for stationary work if you had to sit in it. Running a generator, feed grinder, grain auger, etc.
That's kinda what I was thinking.
Is case combine ready for harvest season??
As someone with an mx series tractor, this video is gonna be helpful. Hopefully not in a long time, if ever.
I wonder if the White 6065 tractor has the same pin arrangement ? we've got one thats driving us nucking futs
these bent metal PTO shafts will ever so slightly develop a twist that begins to un-screw and push the shaft longer and it can cause impacting wear on the pins if you have a universal joint in the mix

Did Kevin work for O’neils before? If he did im pretty sure he came out to work on my old bosses case tractor 😂 ive met him once before 😂
Would it be possible if you visit the USA. To pick up some gasket remover, then carry it back?
Do all farmers do this sort of work on their equipment? Do some of them get a mechanic to come in and do this work?
Very interesting 👌
Loctite 638... The green stuff is good for those pins when you run out of that Case stuff. Also, a carbide scraper is better than razor blades. 😁😁
The Welker Farms reference!

Knowing your equipment helps a lot, there's only that many moving parts and if you systematically eliminate one by one, you 'll find the source.
Ford makes that gasket remover still i believe. Also anyone on here astro tolls makes a carbide scraper. One pass and done usually.
Damn fine how-to video.
Impact and a crows foot for flat face fittings works well also
Will try that next time! Thanks!
28:25 is that a Fiat 800 🤔
Why don't you have pins made from better material to prevent that failure from occuring. I would machine up dowel pins from some inconel 718 or some 300m.
You just move the failure on to the next weakest part and it costs thousands to repair instead of the $2.00 pins
Damn Kevin, quit breaking shit 😂
With close-ups Rich, get closer, unless it's a secret !?
cain't see a god damn thang !
I hate those Pins! Such a pain to remove or install on the old Maxxums.

We call them a suit-Case, because you need a suitcase of parts to keep it running.
I think the European spec machines had selectable PTO doing away with a lot of that complexity.
Engineers didn't redesign the PTO case to be nice to mechanics. They did it because it was stupidly hard to assemble at the factory.
Tomato tomahtoe
Exactly they build things with the thought that it will never need to be taken apart again.
My money is on casting rejection rates
