  • In this video, I talk to you about my hair journey setbacks since starting my hair growth journey. I decided to do this video, not only to let you know what's been happening with my hair over the past 3 years, but to also try and motivate, encourage and inspire those of you going through difficult times with your hair.
    The 1st Setback
    Fortunately, things ran smoothly during my hair journey from October 2007 to June 2011, however, towards the end of June when I was 27 weeks pregnant, I started to notice thinning ends and decided to do a 6 inch haircut to remove them and bring my hair back to health again. My hair was so much more thicker, fuller and healthier and I was happy with how it looked.
    The 2nd Setback
    After having my son and going through postpartum shedding, I experienced lots of knots and tangles when washing my hair, which took me days to detangle and it kept happened 3 weeks in a row. On the 3rd time, there was just one small section of my hair I wasn't able to save and so unfortunately, I had to cut the entire section of hair off, leaving about 2-3 inches. I was devastated and feeling uneasy, as it happened days before I was due to do a 2 day seminar and exhibit at the Afro Hair & Beauty Show in 2012.
    The 3rd Setback
    Once my postpartum shedding was over, I noticed that my hair just wasn't as thick and full as it was and didn't feel the same, so I decided to cut 3 inches off to help bring back the thickness. Again, my hair was so much better and I was finally working on getting things back to where it once was.
    The 4th Setback
    The next problem I started to notice most recently about my hair, was a few shorter pieces around the top sections and wondered what was happening. I eventually realised that one of my most favourite protective hairstyles 'The French Twist' was weaking my hair and causing it to break, so I stopped wearing that style for about a month to give my hair a break. This was very frustrating, since I felt I'd just gotten over most of the past setbacks and had moved on only to experience this. But I guess somtimes when you get over one hurdle, another one comes again and you just have to keep going, no matter what.
    So as I mentioned in this video, it's really to try and motivate, encourage and inspire you to keep going and I hope I've managed to do that.

    Thank you for being brave enough to say that you have too. I sometimes feel like relaxed hair gurus don't show their setbacks to their viewers and that they make us feel like they don't have shedding, or breakage, or tangles!! I had a setback in May of this year from too much bunning and I cut off 4 inches of my hair. I thank God that it has grown back and its so much more even. Continued success on your journey!!

    Yes! Setbacks are a must while on any journey in life...it's how you handle them which is the key factor. I had a major setback on my way to my goal of BSL (see video). After getting over that went on to achieving MBL. Thereafter made a major decision to transition to natural a year ago. Now just getting waiting for my hair to grow back while getting to know my 4D texture. Thus far I'm currently at SL...not bad for only a year. Giving myself another 2 years to be back at BSL. Thanks for sharing.

    Oh my I had the same setback when I carried my daughter. I experienced very dry hair with thinning ends. I had bra strap length hair as a result of my 3 year journey and was setback to shoulder length in 2013. I have not done much with my hair and it is still at shoulder length. I hope to start my journey again to healthy long hair. Cheers and great video!

    Thanks, Julie, PERFECT timing! I've been on my HJ for 7 mths now and I was using the castor oil among other things & noticed a GREAT improvement with my hair. But over the last few weeks my hair started breaking and thinning out, and I realized that a particular product was doing more harm than good. So I really felt discouraged recently but thanks to you I have now been re-motivated. Awesome job! Kudos...from Jamaica :-)

    This video was so encouraging. I actually thought of giving up on my hair journey up to last night. I've been on my HJ for about 7mths and already had a major setback from protein overload, major breakage. SO frustrating. Now I am just infusing my hair with moisture and for now I'm doing braids as my protective style...gearing up for the big chop. I am now APL, so I may take it up to SL. Anyhoo your video was timely and I feel motivated to continue. Much support from Trinidad & Tobago!

    Thank you sooo much. You are such an encouragement for me. I started my hair journey because of you. I had honestly given up on my hair, it would always get to collar bone length, then something would happen and it would get damage. Always in the same spot in the crown of my head it would just break badly. I have just started my journey this month and once again my hair in the crown of my head broke down to 1 1/2 inch long, but I am pushing through the rest of my hair is healthy and thriving.Thank you again.. You have inspired me to understand my hair and how to really take care of it. My goal is bra strap length. Keeping my fingers crossed no more breakage.. also could you do a video on how you stretch your relaxers.

    I have had two setbacks in one go! Ive been on my hair journey since July 2012 and reached armpit length this June! Washed my hair on the 3rd week and my hair at the back was soo frizzy! Was really upset coz chopping it is my only option,( haven't done it yet though). Now 5 weeks post I notice My edges are thinning, because I was using Bantu knots as my protective style and they were too tight I guess!!I got to the point I wanted to chop most of my hair off, but Thank you for the post at least now I know it's ok.. will just have to be patient and hopefully my hair will be healthy again soon! Thanks again :)

Just pick yourself back up and learn from the experience. It only makes us wiser and more prepared to deal with it, incase it happens again. But best of luck on your journey!!!

    Thanks for this video! I'm always curious about how people get past their setbacks and you answered for each one. I've been in my HJ for right at two years and I experienced a protein overload setback in the very beginning from which I had to cut about two inches. After recovering from tons of protein free deep conditioning and moisturizers (I ordered Bee Mine) things were great until June. I gave myself protein overload again. I prepped for swimming by using Aphogee's Reconstructor and ORS Replenishing Conditioner each time because I read it was good to do so. Sadly, all of that protein started causing breakage and I had to cut. My hair stayed thick and full with the cut but I'm an inch above BSL. I sometimes wonder will MBL every come? It was encouraging to see you hang in for so many years. It's a lifelong journey anyhow so I'm certain we can reach our goals. 😉👍

    • @HealthyAfroHair
      @HealthyAfroHair  10 лет назад

      Your very welcome and thanks for sharing your hair setbacks too. The main thing is getting through the difficult stages and learning from the experiences. But I'm sure you'll eventually reach your goal of MBL. It may take some time, but just know it can happen 😊

  • @kothdrop1
    @kothdrop1 10 лет назад

    I also experienced a setback about 6 months ago. My hairdresser of 10 years ran my relaxer to the ends of my hair. She had NEVER done that before and she could tell I was angry. Despite protein treatments, this caused my ends to thin out and I had to chop off 3 inches. I should have been BSL by now. The good news is that I am grazing APL and I am still mostly texlaxed by some miracle. Also, she knows to not do that again! She is a nice elderly lady, but I have to be very careful with her. Once she retires, I am doing my own relaxers. I am not taking chances with anyone else in my hair. She will be the last.

My mother is the only one who relaxes my hair and does my trims & cuts, as I don't trust anyone else 😊 But I'm happy to hear that you're still going strong on your hair journey and that things are going well! Thanks for sharing your setback with me.

    Excellent vid! Thanks for doing it. It is important to know that setbacks happen to all of us, so we don't have to feel like it is just us. How long did it take you to grow that short piece of hair out? I know you said quite awhile. I'm asking because I am dealing with that at my crown.

    • @HealthyAfroHair

    I don't put my hair in a ponytail or a bun that much because it puts stress on my roots and it somrtimes it makes my scalp hurt so sometimes when I let my hair down it's kind of a relief and it makes my scalp feel much better.

    My dear sorry to hear about ur set backs but happy to hear your recovery. How did u do it, I mean ur 3 inches hair cutting up with the rest of ur hair. Does that mean the other part of ur hair was not retaining length? . Set backs are d worst thing during hair journey. I have been there and still there. Started my hair journey a yr ago with a goal of reaching BSL in one yr. In 9 months I almost made it but had excessive breakage that now am just below AL and that hurts. Am still battling with breakage hoping that one day I will find solutions. Please help me by doing a tutorial on how to combat breakage. Please please.

      Thank you and sorry to hear about your setbacks too! But yes, they're most definitely the worst thing and it's devastating. As for that section of my hair catching up with the rest, my hair has been growing as normal and I've been following the same hair care regime. But surprisingly, that particular part grew quite fast and on top of the trimming I'd been doing it's catching up, but not quite there yet. But I'll try and see what I can do about doing a breakage video for you.

    Hi. Love your videos. I've been following your channel for a while. It's been very helpful as I too am on a hair journey. Recently I experienced breakage in the middle of my head due to protein overload I think. One question, how long did it take for your hair to grow back and catch up with the rest after you had to cut a piece off? Thanks in advance.

      +Shannie Mc Hey, glad to hear you enjoy them 😊 I can't remember how long it took, but i'm guessing it might have been about 2 years. But I'd been cutting my hair quite a bit during that time, so that allow it to slightly catch up.

    This video was so needed! I'm currently having serious issues with my hair i feel so stuck. I'm nearly at shoulder length but my hair is at different lengths all over so from the back it looks really uneven it looks like it's thinning but I'm not sure if it is thinning or if it's just where its growing at different lengths. I have noticed though that the hair on my double crown is a lot shorter than the rest and it's also a bit tender to touch I've had my hair in an up do for a few months now so I'm not sure if that could be the reason and it's causing breakage I'm not sure if I should cut my ends to a length that looks more healthy but because it's not at a very long length I wasn't sure if I should let it grow out a bit before I trim. My hair is growing but it doesn't look very healthy due to the uneven ends. Do you have any suggestions? X

    • @HealthyAfroHair
      @HealthyAfroHair  9 лет назад

      Kayliegh Jackson I would definitely recommend that you give your hair a rest from the high bun, as it sounds very likely that this is what is causing the breakage and tenderness in that area. Our hair is so delicate and fragile and so wearing the same hairstyle continuously, will cause tension and eventually breakage. I've definitely learnt a lot from my experience and so I often change up my hairstyles regularly and even result to wearing very loose hairstyles (that don't look that great) all in the name of breakage free hair. With regards to the unevenness of your hair, it's very likely that this is making it appear thinner than it actually is. So it might actually be best to either trim or cut it, to give a healthier even appearance or if you think it's likely to catch up, then just wait it out and see.

    • @HealthyAfroHair
      @HealthyAfroHair  9 лет назад

      This method was suggested to help the person in managing their new growth. But yes, it will still relax, however, it will process the hair slightly slower and it may not result in a bone straight look. But to be honest, this option is a lot healthier for the hair.

    Just wondering, do you plait or braid your hair and is it true that it helps your hair grow?

    • @HealthyAfroHair
      @HealthyAfroHair  10 лет назад

      Doreen Del Rey No, I don't do either. To be honest, hair grows regardless of what we do to it, it's just that these particular styles protect our hair from everyday stress and strain from styling. So really, it helps us to retain longer hair lengths, because it's being left alone, preventing any form of breakage from occurring.

    I've realized that when it's almost time for relaxing my new growth I loose hair often. Anytime I comb my hair I see more hair on the comb. So this makes me relax every 6 weeks as its difficult to comb n manage. What do u advice I do.

      dela Amoako I can only assume that your hair is very dry and coarse at the roots, so any slight manipulation, will result in breakage. My new growth used to be the same, very coarse and dry (still is). But in order to avoid breakage, I spray my roots with the 'World of Curls Spray' which helps to keep it moist and much easier to manage. So I'd suggest that leading up to your relaxer day, that you spray your roots with a moisturising product (make sure it's in a spray bottle) and apply all over (and of course), keep the rest of your hair moist too. But one tip of advice, never comb your hair when it's dry, instead always moisturise first.

    I haven't relaxed my hair since April and hoping not to relax it for a while because my hair is damaged . Whats your tips for maintaining hair that is due to be relaxed ? Should I still comb it ?

      Try to avoid combing it from the roots down, especially if you have a lot of re-growth that is thick and coarse, as it could cause breakage. Instead, keep the roots moisturised and comb your hair with extra care, having applied moisture to it first.

    Hi hun I'm currently expecting and I'm terrified of pp shedding. I'm not sure if you explained the steps, products or methods that you used to conquer it but can you?

      Hey Shannon, I'm sure I replied to your comment, but I'm looking and couldn't see it. Maybe it didn't send. PP shedding is a natural process, so unfortunately, there's very little we can do. However, I just continued to follow my hair regime, as normal until it past. It must have taken about 6 months, before the front areas of my began to grow back. But I wouldn't worry about it too much, as some women are lucky enough not to experience it or it's not as bad as what they were expecting. You never know, you might be one of the lucky ones :) But I do have a video called; My Postpartum Shedding Experience, if you'd like to check it out.

      ***** I know and like I said, if the hair is healthier after the cut then I wouldnt consider it a setback...its more of a victory because she rid herself of the damage
