God the surreal existential dread I just experienced from watching this video and in the middle of my viewing getting a news notification of another mass shooting that killed over a dozen people. It's moments like that that make me actually understand the inacation on this issue because how do people keep fighting for change through this absolutely paralyzing horror. I can almost sympathize with the people who'd watch this movie because obviously it's easier to watch an action fantasy where anyone can be a hero rather than confront the issue head on and let go of that imaginary world they'd rather live in.

THIS is what makes dealing with conservatives so frustrating. They constantly tell us what their intentions are but when they get called out on it they lie and we're all supposed to act like we didn't watch them say or do exactly what they said or did. It's maddening.
Imo the left and right uses different definitions for different things, they speak 2 different languages, when you hear a conservative like Ben speak and say what he did it’s contextually true to a conservative, he doesn’t want to influence you politically but change how things are culturally. What a leftist hears is they are hypocritical, out of touch liars. Well, the truth is somewhere in the middle. He isn’t making movies to push political ideals but culture and politics are closely intertwined. So what he says seems hypocritical. Conservatives are out of touch in the context of why some people insist on making things more complicated and nuanced yet can’t or will not be objective when applying the same nuanced way of thinking in what they say. As for them Being liars, everyone is to some degree from a politically bias way of thinking. The issue is when someone is being intellectually dishonest for their political views and I notice this on the left in terms of the way culture is going.

I can even agree that sometimes that means people on the left and right misunderstand each other's arguments and definitely agree that when two representatives of their belief's debate, both sides can leave thinking that one person "destroyed" the other in the marketplace of ideas. Just look at Chaya Raichik's embarrassing interview. This does not then mean that the middle ground is enlightened or that the truth lies somewhere between both of these positions. Middlegrounders are just indecisive, because it's also true that both the left and right could be wrong, and the middle ground between those two, is equally wrong. Rather than doing the labor of coming up with something outside of the conversation or picking a side, the middleground is a no-man's land in terms of an informed political stance at least if the middleground is indeed your general political stance. But no in this example, I was right on the money, because what do you think happens to politics if culture is influenced? If, culturally, we all consider abortion murder, and we have movies that depict it as such, how do you think people are gonna vote on that? I agree that Ben Shapiro doesn't think about the implications of the things he says and thus these statements probably don't ring as hypocritical to him. After all, he is the same person who said if your house floods due to global warming, you should just sell it and move, to someone who would want a flooded house apparently. But this doesn't change the fact that his statement, was a dumb one, or if you prefer, an ignorant one.

We had an assembly for “Rachel’s Challenge” every year in elementary school, the first time the speakers came around the messaging was all well and good: “Rachel Scott was a victim in the Columbine shooting, she always encouraged people to be kind to others, you never know what someone’s going through” etc. I remember being really moved by the assembly overall, and i was looking forward to them coming back the next year …UNTIL they finally showed up that next school year. All of a sudden their messaging turned Into “Rachel was a devout Christian who was actually psychic. she knew something bad was going to happen and predicted the exact number of casualties in her drawing of a dead flower. God and Jesus spoke to her frequently. Oh and be kind I guess.” They then passed around photo copies of the dead flower drawing/prophecy that I guess predicted the whole school shooting a d total number of casualties…for us to keep?? For some reason??? I sat there as a first or second grader SO utterly confused

I remember very distinctly that during one of those assemblies the guy said she had premonitions and told her whole family she was going to die young or some shit. I think as far as school shooter movies go, "Elephant" (2003) really nailed it. It feels mundane, none of the vignettes result in any story lines. And this accomplishes something very important in terms of realism that makes a point - these are regular kids, doing their regular daily routine, and none of it goes anywhere or ends up meaning anything. It doesn't dramatize anything. It's just cold, almost "boring" tragedy. And I think that's how a film about such a horrific phenomena should feel. We shouldn't gain any sort of story-based satisfaction. We shouldn't deify the victims. It should make us feel empty because there's nothing about this subject that should make us feel anything but horror and how tragedy can strike everyday people in everyday moments.
I think I remember hearing shapiro and co. talk about elephant as not good, but I can’t remember if it was because it “humanizes the shooters too much” (which is wrong, I barely remember them being characters at all) or because it’s not fun enough; too much of a bummer. I agree. It was so weirdly Gus Van Sant. There was no glorification. Not really much drama at all. They're all just kids lost in their worlds. Then there's that spooky scene where you watch the shooter practicing with video games. We get to watch for too long. None of the juiced out Die Hard/ cigar choming machismo.
It’s a great movie and I thought it was about the kids and their lives and how all of their interesting and unique personalities and character arks that should have decades to evolve and grow are all cut short because some cringy losers were allowed by greedy politicians and cowardly libertarian gun nuts to buy guns on the internet. It’s really a beautiful tragedy that shows how extremely tragic school shootings are without any emphasis on the shooters or the violence just the tragic loss of potential and life experience.
I get the impression that the film language these people were trying to draw upon by showing the protagonist being able to coldly kill the shooters is a transposed “final girl” archetype. But, like you said, they treat a child like a soldier, not a child.
It’s definitely a warped version of the final girl archetype. Specifically the third act badass where the girl has been through hell and back, and is now ready to fight to stay alive. Note that archetype is all about her just trying to get out of the situation by going through it, and only happens when literally everything else has failed. Also it’s usually the sign that the final girl has snapped so it’s not really the starting point for a character.
@@metronicmagician1816yeah, i actually thought that this schoolgirl's ridiculous willingness to shed blood pretty much at the drop of a hat was a really good character trait. a scriptwriter who actually knew what he was doing might have played it up as a character flaw on her part.
That and the fact that an interesting form of trauma is created + displayed throughout the movie. Most likely they just copy-pasted the character traits of a bitter and war-traumatized soldier onto a girl and called it a day (gag), but as a storywriter/scriptwriter myself I saw a massively interesting point they could've addressed but actively chose not to. A lot of Americans have been scarred by at least one major mass-shooting (mostly indirectly but for some directly). This can cause a lot of desensitization compared to onlookers who witness the current situation we're struggling with. Americans are much more willing to address violence with violence. So they show a child being forcibly put into an extremely dangerous and traumatic situation for her to react with violence. That makes sense. Yet, they never address how awful this direction she personally took is. Despite making her look heroic and satisfied, she's now going to deal with the aftermath of a life filled with PTSD and possibly derealization issues. A future aftermath they don't show. We love to glorify the moment where we stand victorious over adversity yet we never acknowledge the issues that come with the traumatic incident. The same issues happen with veterans. We love to praise them. We love to glorify. We love to thank them and bask in the riches we acquire from countries we wage wars with. Yet, we leave them homeless. We refuse to offer them adequate mental healthcare. We never address what comes after the return. It's awful. They COULD have addressed these issues with trauma/ignoring the downsides or traumas that come with fighting these issues yet they decided to follow the status quo. Glorify the person willing to sacrifice themselves. Feed them to the wolves when you realize they've been mentally destabilized by the incident. It's disgusting.
I think the way Shapiro talks about the film is the most telling thing. He refers to a "culture war" and acts like all films in Hollywood are made with an agenda, *because he can't conceive of any other reason to create something.* It's not about art for art's sake. And that's why his art sucks. There are so many creatives in Hollywood who make films because they *adore* the art form, and that love comes through clearly. there are also many in Hollywood who create for money, or are constrained by studio demands based on profitability, and that's how we get some truly shitty films. But Shapiro creates to "win the culture war," and that's why his art will never be anything but mediocre.
I think hollywood is more "Art for money's sake." People are encouraged to make are they care about, yes - but only so long as they remember that their artistic ambition is not the goal, merely a means towards that goal: Return on investment.
Conservatives always have to declar war on something. War on terror, war on drugs, war on crime, war on immigration, culture war... and the usual wars with other countries. It's never a dialogue, a sharing of ideas. It's a struggle, a battle, something they have to *win* or else they lose something in turn.
"Art for art's sake" is a statement of defiance against leftists pointing out that art is inherently political. The director basically paraphrases "art for art's sake" at 20:52.
The goal of many Hollywood movies is for them to push leftist ideology onto people, and many of them don't hide that fact. So, why is it ok for them to do it, but then suddenly wrong when conservatives do it? Could it be that you don't actually care about the action whatsoever, you only care about whos doing it? And since its more of a whisper or not-so-secret secret in Hollywood, its easier to act like its NOT happening there? That, and the fact that you're probably a liberal/leftist yourself. so you support certain actions as long as the people performing the action are people you agree with, but then you put your hypocrite crocs on and act like the same action is terrible when the people doing it are people you DONT agree with.

It really is laughable. As another commenter pointed out, the problem with "wokeness" in modern TV isn't the politics, it's the pandering. It's totally natural for the main character's love interest to be black, but not when it's there to check a box, ESPECIALLY when those boxes were made by conservatives who would turn right around and criticize "woke" Hollywood for doing exactly the same.

@@DIEGOSHAY Luke made a single successful shot from a fighter - a type of shot he already had experience with previously, as noted when he banters with Biggs about having made similar shots like that when piloting ships back on Tatooine, and after demonstrating that he had skill with operating shipboard weaponry previously during the Millennium's engagements with Imperial forces - after he did in fact receive basic training on how to use the Force from Obi-Wan. Limited training, but enough so that he at least understood from firsthand experience what relying on the Force is like and how to do so. And that limited training is ALL that he used for the final shot in question. He wasn't pulling off any complex Force abilities or fancy tricks. He wasn't doing anything that was beyond what his limited training taught him. He merely relied on the Force to help guide him in being successful at something he was already experienced at. So he used skills that he was previously established to have, was shown learning new skills from someone experienced in using them, and then proceeded to combine those skills for a single feat that wasn't far off from something he described having done previously. Even then, he was only able to make that shot because his allies assisted him in the battle, particularly at the climax where Vader was literally one pull of the trigger away from killing him before being ambushed by Han. He only had "zero training" if you ignore everything leading up to that moment throughout the movie. And, of course, none of that is even even taking into account the second movie, which focuses far more on his shortcomings, or the finale of the trilogy, in which those shortcomings have been tempered but are still very much present. Even still, despite his increase in experience and skill in those films, he still just barely escapes in the second and ultimately still needs to be saved in the climax of the third.
What I personally find bewildering is that the movie that arguably kicked off the hardcore 1-man-army style action movie genre as we think of it, Rambo: First Blood has the exact OPPOSITE message. Rambo, as a character, is ALWAYS considered tragic. He is someone who just wants to live somewhere by himself so he doesn’t have to use the skills he developed. He is haunted by the inconcievable number of lives he has taken, and even TO THIS DAY that remains true. Like, the entire point of those movies is that killing strips you of your humanity. It hollows out your very soul, and thats something that has largely been lost, I think, on the audiences that consume them.
And the other film that codified the tropes, Die Hard, is about a relatively normal guy who is repeatedly shown to be in way over his head, barely survives, and spends the vast majority of the film hiding and trying to get help from people who are more qualified to deal with this.
Rambo was the first American movie which taught me how messed up the country is. The dude got arrested for basically walking and having no home. Like, WTF? Country of freedom? What?

re: the warrior ethos - the iliad is one of my favorite books and i couldn’t help but think about it as you talked about the warrior ethos and zoe killing tristan. it reminded me of achilles killing hector in book 21, except the iliad doesn’t stop there. killing hector doesn’t “fix” achilles, it just means hector’s dead. it’s only when achilles finally properly mourns patroclus and lets go of his anger that he can find something like peace.
To add on to your point, killing Hector didn't just do nothing for Achilles, it made him arguably worse. He still had all the uncontrollable rage from the death of Patroclus, but no one alive to target it towards, and thus he began to parade Hector's corpse around the walls of Troy, calling out insults to the people behind those walls, aimlessly.
And replying to both of you: the Iliad was made literally thousands of years ago, yet it tells a more interesting and morally compelling story than Run Hide Fight ever tried to. I think it shows that civilisations actually accustomed to warfare and death in the public view take a much more sober approach when it comes to portraying its consequenses. I believe this movie relies on an utterly flawed understanding of what makes the warrior ethos an interesting story.

Seeing the movie imply how her "feeling like she was in a war" was a good thing, gives me the same disturbing feeling as when a person I know who was in the military complained to a family member that I wasn't aware of my surroundings enough, and while in public I should always be watching out for someone who'll potentially hurt me. Like, I think it's fine to encourage having a few basic practices to help keep yourself safe, but shouldn't we be striving for a society where we can actually feel safe?

What struck me was when this reviewer remarked on an "*obviously* bullet-proof window." What sort of country do you live in where school windows being bullet-proof is standard.
I can, off the top of my head, think of at least five other places I would rather have a "Die Hard but in an X" movie set. A bank. A casino. A secret underground vault. A vegan grocery store. A warehouse for a company that sells suspiciously spacious ventilation shafts. Literally *anything* that isn't "a school".

Tristan is the name of a shooter from the Netherlands from 13 years ago. I still recall this because it was one of very few mass shootings here in the Netherlands. This 'movie' is just sick.
Atomic Blonde was nothing like James Bond. It was quite good, because of how visceral and real it portrayed a fight scene where someone actually runs out of breath, gets tired, gets injured and it affects how they fight, gets scared of loosing and needs to stop and assess the situation all during a fight where life and death is at stake, and the person they are fighting feels a similar way. I think it's one of the best films ever made in terms of a real fight being portrayed. She wasn't this invincible protagonist who didn't make mistakes and was completely relatable.

The first statement is a generalization that means 'The broad movie-going audience does not want to see *artificially-diverse* main characters'. As in, white producers/directors/writers making movies about POCs the way THEY want to portray POCs. Audiences love Jordan Peele's movies, despite them being full of black people, because audiences don't care about race; they want to see a well-made story with solid, universal themes. And, yes, Hollywood makes woke movies to appeal to the woke. Woke people tend to be wealthy white people who love to bitch about how bad _other_ white people are. Woke people make woke movies so they can pat themselves on the back and say, 'All of our opinions are right. We're the GOOD people.' Any time *anyone* makes fiction, and their focus is on politics more than story and character and craft, it's insufferable. No audience likes being nagged. Especially not by people who never examine their own morals. BTW, I'm not saying the right is exempt from this at all. I'm old enough to remember that, all this current woke stuff is a cultural response to the stifling, repressive 'family values' conservatism of the 80s.
It is a contradictory statement to us but also to be fair they don’t consider poc and other minorities to be people. I was going to say they don’t consider poc to be people worth catering to, but no, straight up, I think sometimes poc are just subhumans to them, as if we’re dogs who belong at the bottom of a food chain. Or a strict immutable hierarchy. This is why any attempt to cater to a minority audience is seen as ignoring what the people really want. There’s an unspoken bracket after “people” that says (the people who really matter, anyway). This is also why any advancement a minority can do in the hierarchy to better themselves, get an opportunity, or even just get the smallest win od finally getting movies that have them in mind as the target audience, MUST be artificial to conservatives, we must inherently be taking the place of someone more deserving of that spot. We have to be manipulating the way things SHOULD be. Because there’s no changing a hierarchy. A hierarchy is just nature (Or other times it’s put in place by god). (Seriously, realizing this is just how conservatives think and the often pseudo-religious logic behind this line of thinking has made everything so much clearer to me)
Learning about Shapiro’s failures as a screenwriter recontextualizes all his “Hollywood hates the Right” schtick. No Ben, they just hated you. You don’t have to make it everyone else’s problem too.

Ya know, this movie pisses me off, I was in the building a fatal school shooting took place in, and even though I escaped unharmed and in a decent headspace, I still remember the terror I felt sitting in that classroom and reading the headline "2 injured one dead".
One time I was in class and we all heard what sounded like automatic gun fire. Our teacher told us to get under our desks and there was a couple minutes where I thought “what if somebody with a gun comes in here and mows us all down” and the terror/anxiety I felt has stuck with me to this day and I will never forget it. It was only after we all found out somebody set off firecrackers in the metal trash can outside our class’ door, that was when the anxiety subsided. That feeling of helplessness is traumatic to say the least
Yes, its baffling because of how different from the typicall Bond movie "Atomic Blonde" is. It would be more appropiate to compare it to Jason Bourne, and even then there's a lot of other very notable differences aside from "the main character is a woman". I think Ben Shapiro only namedropped James Bond because it is a recognizable spy character from "the good old days"
Like Bond, Atomic Blonde is based on a book; a graphic novel. It was directed by the same producer of John Wick, and you can see the fight choreography in it as well. I looked up the rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While the critics rated it around 79%, the audience rating was a modest 64%. Meaning, there was a divergence, but audiences didn’t hate it. Why does Shapiro bring up such examples so lazily if he knows it’s very easy to debunk?
I know I'm 2 years late to this video, but I want you to know how valuable and good your critique of film literacy is, and how insightful your research and thoughts are on film media. Media literacy is lost on a lot of "movie review" channels and I'm always thoroughly impressed with how much substance and care you put into your videos.
I remember being told that if this happened to me- if a shooter was going around 1 by 1 killing children who answered yes to "Do you believe in Jesus" and letting the ones who said no live- that we students should all say yes and sacrifice our lives and go to heaven for Jesus. This we were told at the Catholic 'Sunday school' (CCD)
Well I mean ... Jesus did exist historically, so it's not really something you can just "not believe in". Whether or not he was literally god though is a different question.
@@parallax256 Probably. Can't be entirely certain because Jesus wasn't really well-known until long after his death, and the earliest texts are based on oral traditions. It's certainly plausible that there was a historic Jesus, a single man who started the cult that would one day become the world's most successful religion. It's even possible that he was condemned by Roman authorities after a show-trial and killed by crucifixion - such things happened quite often, first-century Judea was not politically stable and there were a number of revolts against Roman control. But there's no surviving direct record of that trial, so... who knows? Maybe, maybe not, doesn't really matter.
The concept of someone coming in from a van and going "Hey, we're here to shoot up the school." Just shows how unattached and deluded the Dailywire is on all of this. This isn't meant to be a drama. The elephant from 2003 nailed this.
I really feel llke the "good guy with a gun" narrative died in Uvalde. This movie sneers at the idea that one deserves to live in peace even if they don't have the power to do so. "Oh, you're depending on the police to protect you? Sheep!" And I think this is why this makes so many people uncomfortable, as you pointed out: the average person can't murder. Most mass shooting victims are more likely to hurl themselves in front of bullets to protect others than attack a gunman. And especially when grade school children are involved, LIKE in Uvalde, the idea that someone could fight back is pure fiction. I've just heard a lot more "it's the price of freedom, libtard" more than "good guy with a gun" ever since.
They literally cannot decide on a narrative to push. It's either "If you want to defund them, next time you need help, call a crackhead not the police" or "Why would you rely on the police".
In the military, we have active shooter training at least once a year. In that training, we're explicitly told NOT to be a hero and go after the gunman unless under extremely specific circumstances. We're always taught to lock and barricade doors, turn off all lights and to hide, and if you're able to escape the building, use an exit that is unseen and take shelter in another building. So you're right. People fighting back during these scenarios is unlikely and definitely not smart and lowers your chance of survival.

I live in the UK, and the only time I ever hear about school shootings is when America has another one. I have to say that I agree with your assessment of the idea of making a movie such as this. It almost put me in mind of the South Park episode, where Sharon loses her shit over school shootings, and then when SP elementary has its own, she absolutely (naturally) goes bananas. All the other adults just assume she is on her period, and being over emotional. Through the episode, Sharon is continually trying to get people to understand the seriousness of the situation to no avail. Only to be finally resolved in accepting the 'mundanity' of the shooting, as if it's just another Tuesday in April. This is America, This is an American disease. No other way to put it really.
The UK hasn't seen a school shooting since 1996. Following that shooting the government passed a 1997 act which almost entirely prohibited the private ownership of guns and ammunition. And since than, not a single school shooting. And very little gun crime overall. Turns out that gun control actually works.
I'm a 4th year medical student. I was admonished by a patient the other day for not 'thanking him for his service.' It got me thinking. I have a personal chip on my shoulder against the DoD, and I find unnecesary (ie., invasion, starting one, etc) to be one of the most morally abhorrent aspects of the human condition. Did the man make me any safer, more free? I fail to see how invading Mogadishu, or Iraq, or Vietnam, for that matter helped me or any other citizen in the slightest. So the question is: do I behave inauthentically just to shmooze a broken solider? Or do I not? I can empathize with vets, but like I said, I have a chip. Killing people IS and SHOULD be abhorrent. I think it'd be a lot easier though if the killee deserved it for some reason.
Most ppl who I know who have served get uncomfortable when people “thanking them for their service”. I don’t think that you owe it to anyone to thank them for their service, especially someone you don’t know who hasn’t really done anything for you. I’m sure that person thinks taking a knee during our National anthem is evil too, although I’m sure he would say he fought for our right to freedom of belief/speech
my father is military, but hes always taught me to only thank the ones who actually did something for my wellbeing. he's worked with many men and women who used the fact they were in the military to basically flex on others in a twisted way, and he always told me to be wary of the ones who cant go a single conversation without mentioning how great they are and how thankful we should be for THEM. we dont treat vets well, a lot of them have gone through HELL and lost more than we ever could, and i dont think that being involved in war means ur a horrific person, because in times like that, a lot of the, were forced to go, but the people who use those horrible incidents to boast are 100% horrific. if you meet someone who boasts about their time in, lets say, iraq or vietnam, there is a huge chance theyre going to be the worst person you will ever meet, but that doesnt mean every soldier who had to go is that way.
Anyone I know who's served don't like when people thank them because they feel weird and don't know how to respond. They did it for tuition or for the money, not because they wanted people to thank them. Your patient sounds like a jerk.
I remember a British soldier who received a major medal from the King. As he stood there, a look of embarrassment on his face, feeling as though he really didn't deserve it since he was only getting the decoration there on the drill field because he was the sole survivor of his squad, the King gave him a look which seemed to say, "I'm only here as a stand-in for a lot of people, too, you know. Sometimes I find it embarrassing, too. We just have to get through this with dignity for the sake of all of them."

I love the movie 1917 because I think it very explicitly creates a story which nothing can be learned from, the innocent idealist is killed and the already battle-exhausted cynic survives yet another horror show because war is an inhumane place. It recognizes that the static nature of warrior idealogy is the result of systemic dehumanization and glorified violence.

James Bond was a massive development in spy/action stories, and it sparked a 'spy craze' in the 60's and everything since then, about a slick super-competent person fighting baddies, lives in the shadow of James Bond. There were precursors to Bond, but spy work was grubby and sneaky before Bond, rather than glamorous and larger-than-life.
Especially when Atomic Blonde is a lot more of a John Le Carre homage with action beats, and Le Carre is famously wildly different from Ian Fleming’s work in tone and atmosphere, something which becomes super obvious in how Atomic Blonde is written and filmed, its not just gritty Bond its an extremely brutal realistic cold-war world, but yeah John Wick, Bond, are inspirations, though funnily enough David Leitch directed both Wick and Atomic Blonde. Also its fucking hilarious that ATOMIC BLONDE is the big sticking point of ‘look how political these woke liberals are’ when that movie was seriously the opposite, without any corporate pandering, just awesome action by a spy, I mean he could’ve named star wars or any Disney property but he named one of the best action films of 2017

I find that's one of the key points of how mature you can tell someone is: when they see an action movie, or a disaster movie, who do they see themselves in? The example I always use is the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan: I'm always leery of anyone who is absolutely convinced they'd be one of the guys making it off of the beach in that scenario, and not one of the people who dies horribly before reaching the cliffs. It's not unique to conservatives, but conservatives in particular seem to really suffer from Main Character Syndrome.

I actually liked the rachel's challenge assemblies as a kid, just because it was a good way to develop my incredibly late (autism, abuse, other shit) emotional development and empathy skills. Also, because it made it so whenever my admittedly very, very troubled kid brain wanted to do something like that at the school, I'd remember the rachel's challenge stuff and chill out. Glad it hadn't turned into weird christian soapboxing like another comment said, at least not while they still ran them at my middle school.

The filmmakers aren't without talent, but ultimately their product just feels like a cynical, cowardly insult to people who have to live with the people the Daily Wire indulge in creating. ... anyway, great work on this! Two things about the movie that bother me are when the dad fires into the school and kills a school shooter, and the ending where the girl hunts down and tortures the big bad. First, the dad's part reeks of that power fantasy conservatives have after a mass shooting, where they would've put their plot armour on, drove over and effortlessly killed all the bad guys (which they say from the safety of their armchairs). None of them think about the ramifications of yet another random person with a gun rocking up to a mass shooting scene with warped ideas of what they're doing, not to mention that it's nowhere that easy to fight and take a life like that. Second, the girl's final scene is a huge waste of potential - just think of how psychologically scarred this girl is that she becomes as sadistic as he, albeit in a pay evil unto evil way. Now think about what could've been done instead, like her realising how far she's fallen, or that she went after the wrong guy because the big bad had already shot himself and she mistook another kid for him.
A point (that I thought you were leading to) when you talked about how the lead girl seems to act like a burly hardened marine - she's a self insert for the films' target audience. In the same way that Bella in Twilight is a generic teenage girl trying to fit in, to appeal to all the teen girls trying to fit in that those books and movies appealed to, the lead girl in this movie is a burly hardened army shoot em up type, to appeal to all the grown adult men who like guns who will watch this movie.
And those who want to marry an "all American mini-marine" Highschool girl! Don’t forget that Matt Walsh insist that the only problem with Highschool girls getting pregnant is that they’re not married yet!

And the teacher actually teaches different School subjects like science, math and stuff like that. The only "assassination training" they get is from a government goun that uses gym time as training. That's something completely different than those stories. In fact the person that they're trying to kill actually wants them to succeed in their academics and cares for them as students. There is a whole entire plot point of one of the characters strapping a grenade to themselves to kill the teacher. If it was inspired by those stories the teacher would be proud but no, that's not what happens. The teacher actually gets incredibly furious that they would even think about doing something that reckless and stupid. It's not even an action anime, it's literally a comedy, where most of the attempts don't work and fail in funny fashion. It sounds like you just saw a few clips and heard the name and judged it just by that.
Not gonna lie... I had no intention of watching more than five minutes of this video. Thought I'd pop in, get the gist in the intro, roll my eyes at the movie, and call it a day. 46 minutes and 55 seconds later, I find that not only did I watch (and thoroughly enjoy) the whole video, but am genuinely likely to watch it again for further examination... Fantastic video, reminded me a lot of Jacob Geller's video on Call of Duty, where the creators stated Call of Duty was not political. It's such a ridiculous statement, and if anything it makes the product seem less intersting to me. Are you saying your work wasn't trying to say anything? That there was no point to it? That's obviously not the case, unless you just flick paint at a wall your art is going to have meaning you have crafted, but trying to deny that in itself implies you're scared of criticism or scared of being associated with politics.
People only ever say their work is "not meant to be political" when they don't understand how much of daily life is political. Even having the privilege to afford a car is political. And every single piece of media out there is political. Some are just more neutral than others, but political nonetheless. They're just trying to avoid harsh realities and interesting conversations.

If you don't acknowledge that, then being "apolitical" is simply saying nothing at all about life. You don't have to say "vote for this specific party" to be political. Most interesting media has something to say. I've noticed people who insist that their media is apolitical don't understand how politics colors every viewpoint in their life, down to the characters they include (whether they have black, gay, etc characters), to the themes that unintentionally shine through their writing (even just including a scene wherein a bully gets punished for bullying, is part of anti-bullying politics). We can't escape having opinions or letting those opinions shine through in our media, why not embrace it and make sure you're telling a story that portrays the beliefs you're interested in? It's quite wishy-washy to claim that your work is apolitical and is often just a way to defend yourself from getting criticized about the things you include in the story.

The intent to present any portrayal of life without including the ways which it has been molested by political interests specifically is interesting to me. Of course, I’m biased as someone who exists in an “intersection” of many politically targeted groups. I don’t like the concept of “everything is political” because people think I, a human, am political solely because I exist as I am. Everything I do, think, and say must have political implications; anything I am included in, excluded from, interested or disinterested in, so on and so forth. It’s almost as if I don’t have a right to my own existential condition because the external political circumstances are “inherent” to everything about me. Personally, I think that politics is separate from human existence, so it’s not a fact of life that everything is inherently political. I think it’s the goal of politics, for the purposes of maintaining and obtaining power, to make everything political. Existing shouldn’t be inherently political. And I think assuming everything is inherently political invites the state to have input where it deserves none. But, again, I don’t disagree that under the circumstances we live in, it may in fact be the reality. I’m just arguing that it may not HAVE to be the case, and in all likelihood it SHOULDN’T be. And I say that because I don’t know who gave anyone the right to make me political by default. I’m a person, not a talking point. Unpopular idea, but maybe de-politicizing certain things will actually allow us to tackle them more effectively, because they are human issues with practical problems and solutions. Not political issues with moral quandaries to be resolved with “beliefs”. For instance. People are hungry. Feed them. This is entirely logical. Homo sapiens has survived against all odds by forming cooperative groups which ensure the survival of everyone possible within that group. It does not need to turn into, “Do they deserve to be hungry? Is it right to feed them?” That, in my opinion, is how politicization ruins things. Now you’ve introduced meritocracy and hierarchy to a simple issue of group survival, under circumstances where there is no shortage of the necessary resources. Etc, etc. Personally, I think it would be a great experiment to see something that was deliberately apolitical rather than complacently apolitical.

I personally, though, decide to lean into it to point out people's inherent privilege just through existing in certain ways. It's often the only way I can get my point across to people and explain privilege or how society disadvantages people in subtle ways to people who don't understand that concept or think that bigotry is solely limited to shouting slurs. I await the day we depoliticize human lives, but the people who use "I'm apolitical" as a way to avoid criticism of the beliefs they unintentionally put into their creation are not a good way to do it, so I criticize them for it. I have so many things to say about this movie, so forgive the rant: One other thing I think they got wrong about shootings is the very specific kind of fear for people in them. Sure, teenage white boys acting as violent political zealots is scary, but so many of the perspectives from real survivors is about fear. The waiting. The randomness of the deaths. The fact that it could be your friend, your classmate, your lab partner, who's suddenly gone from your life. The mass herds of screaming, afraid people. Being hunted down in a place you already dislike, the idea that your high school could become your grave. That’s terrifying. But Run Hide Fight isn't about being afraid. Stories about real survivors saving lives are never about proving a political point. It's not like they wrestle the gun away from the scary conservative kid and then curb-stomp them while screaming "THIS IS FOR THE LEFT." But in Run Hide Fight it's exactly that. It's about sticking it to the bad guys and not about humans inherently wanting to protect other humans in life-or-death situations. I think another thing that lends to Zoe's characterization as a teenage assassin is her choosing to kill the bad guys with a gun. The "Fight" part of surviving a shooting is about using what you have around you as protection-- textbooks, metal desks, etc-- to the point of some school supplies being manufactured specifically in the case of shootings (like bulletproof backpacks). If they wanted a badass warrior protagonist while still having her be a kid, it would be a much better idea to have her use school supplies and tools. That, on its own, is so dystopian that if you didn't know that it's a real thing taught to children, it almost sounds like made up symbolism.
Haven't watched it yet, but just reacting to your very early statement "an action movie about a school shooting... yay!" I think that there is potentially a fascinating and necessary movie to be made about the unspoken element of wish fulfilment represented by mass shootings which almost certainly helps enable them- the fantasy of being the hero who stops them, and dangerous that sort of Jouissance is. Observe And Report probably gets to this aspect of the American Id best, but the fact is that the (not exclusively but largely) right wing really wants something like this to happen in front of them so they can be a hero. The fact that in reality heroes usually get shot like the ending of Night of The Living Dead never seems to factor in. A more sophisticated and honest addressing of this impulse is something I'd very much like to see.

It's because most of the real life perpetrators of mass shootings (school and otherwise) are right wing, and so their ideology in this movie is right wing, and the people who made this movie are right wing and just think what they are saying is normal and not "propaganda" and hence not ironic, just normal. The noise of the shooting/car crash not being noticed by anyone was one of the most immersion-breaking things for me. Guns are WAY louder than TV and movies make them seem, like hear them from miles away level loud. And have these people ever heard a shotgun being fired indoors? It’s absolutely deafening, especially with no ear protection on. With the empty, echoey hallways that schools tend to have, every classroom that’s along the same hall as the cafeteria should be hearing the gunfire well enough to get people’s attention.

A school shooting movie was a perfect opportunity to do a tragic horror movie, with the shooter(s) being an artificially created "monster" by the real antagonist, sure they could still make the kid shoot another kid but with a long silent scene of them knowing that they didn't solve anything by killing and that the entire thing will happen again in a cycle until they tackle the real monster, society.
Maybe the movie's trying to make the argument that, no, maybe sometimes society isn't to blame. Maybe sometimes individual people are awful, and that individual people are most responsible for the actions they take.

Your breakdown of the movie was a hell of a lot more interesting than the actual movie. I saw it already, wasn't especially impressed, but when you were broke it down I was like, "That sounds like a pretty cool movie."
I remember seeing the trailers ALLLLL over RUclips. And the clip I remember most is, "They won't remember you. They'll remember ME." It made me think the movie was going to analyze America's obsession with violence and elevating killers over victims. I'm a true crime junkie, and I've seen a huge shift over the past decade from essentially worshipping serial killers to humanizing victims and remembering them as full human beings with hopes, plans, hobbies, loved ones, and a future that was taken from them. So many mass shooters kill to leave a "legacy," and some news outlets have decided to deny them this by not even reporting their names (a move I agree with). So, I naively thought, "Oh. This is a movie about decentering the entitled boys who shoot up schools as a way to satisfy their stunted egos, and instead emphasizes the heroism of everyday survivors who are thrust into this horror without warning and will be forever changed by it. It becomes a legacy of those who choose to answer to the call on the worst day of their lives and save others." And then I clicked the ad and it brought me to the Daily Wire website and I was like, "Oh. No, it's not going to be any of that, never mind."

@aprilshadows8212 While that is a fair perspective to have, it is also very important to have at least SOME gun control. No civilian should be able to own military grade weapons, and there definitely needs to be a system in place for who can get guns. An idea that I think could work is having a licensing and registration system somewhat similar to what we have for automobiles.

I agree that it's nothing like up to standards of Zahler's work, though, Bone Tomahawk is one of my top 10 favourite movies of all time.

I tend to be broadly more sympathetic to the conservative side in the so-called "culture wars" (politically speaking I'm largely non-partisan/centrist, but I do think mainstream cinema and media in general is being absolutely destroyed by, for want of a better or more expressive term, "wokeness" and political agenda, be that the new Oscars ruling that any movie has to meet cast, crew and story diversity standards to be eligible for nomination, or the fact that the works of Ian Fleming and Ronald Dahl are now being butchered by "sensitivity readers"). But at the same time, I absolutely hate hypocrisy (I was against the Bud Light trans campaign, for example, but I was equally against the ad campaign by that conservative-owned watch brand that countered it by featuring biological women in sports; I believe that all companies that sell commodities should refrain from having a political agenda, whether I happen to agree with their points or not- just sell me the fucking product). And, on reflection, I can see why people would consider this movie hypocritical. It's just not something I picked up on while watching it myself, because like I said I don't automatically view school shootings as a political topic, not being American. As a rule, I believe that while it is impossible to fully separate art from politics, the latter should always, always take a back seat to production value, acting skills, writing, etc. And I didn't see any overt political or sociopolitical messaging in the movie's dialogue, which is why it annoyed me far less than the "woke" ones do, even though I do agree that the implicit political messaging does make Shapiro a hypocrite (tbf while I absolutely take your point about Shapiro hating political movies and having made a political movie himself, I'm not sure if the whole girlboss thing is a very valid example here, because unlike with all the woke feminist superhero movies and what have you, A. the protagonist of Run Hide Fight is fallible, makes mistakes, and is also forced to rely on the help of certain men at times and B. there were no cringy "all it needed was a woman"-type lines like you get all over the superhero movies- the protagonist is a girl because she just happens to be one, not because the writers wanted to include an empowering feminist message). I did think Terror On The Prairie (the only other Daily Wire movie I've seen so far) was pretty good, though (again, Gina Carano's character does come out on top, but not because she's a feminist girlboss- it's made explicitly clear that she's completely overpowered and only stays one step ahead thanks to a combination of cunning and sheer luck, and none of the dialogue is tinged with cringy "girl power" moments). Not a masterpiece by any means, but a solid and gripping Western triller nonetheless, and very nicely shot. Whatever one thinks of the DW's politics, they clearly do have some artistic merit as filmmakers, which as a cinephile largely uninterested in politics except where they affect art is always going to be my own personal priority.
God the surreal existential dread I just experienced from watching this video and in the middle of my viewing getting a news notification of another mass shooting that killed over a dozen people. It's moments like that that make me actually understand the inacation on this issue because how do people keep fighting for change through this absolutely paralyzing horror. I can almost sympathize with the people who'd watch this movie because obviously it's easier to watch an action fantasy where anyone can be a hero rather than confront the issue head on and let go of that imaginary world they'd rather live in.

Imo the left and right uses different definitions for different things, they speak 2 different languages, when you hear a conservative like Ben speak and say what he did it’s contextually true to a conservative, he doesn’t want to influence you politically but change how things are culturally. I can even agree that sometimes that means people on the left and right misunderstand each other's arguments and definitely agree that when two representatives of their belief's debate, both sides can leave thinking that one person "destroyed" the other in the marketplace of ideas. Just look at Chaya Raichik's embarrassing interview. This does not then mean that the middle ground is enlightened or that the truth lies somewhere between both of these positions. Middlegrounders are just indecisive, because it's also true that both the left and right could be wrong, and the middle ground between those two, is equally wrong. Rather than doing the labor of coming up with something outside of the conversation or picking a side, the middleground is a no-man's land in terms of an informed political stance at least if the middleground is indeed your general political stance.

All of a sudden their messaging turned Into “Rachel was a devout Christian who was actually psychic. she knew something bad was going to happen and predicted the exact number of casualties in her drawing of a dead flower. God and Jesus spoke to her frequently. Oh and be kind I guess.”
They then passed around photo copies of the dead flower drawing/prophecy that I guess predicted the whole school shooting a d total number of casualties…for us to keep?? For some reason??? I sat there as a first or second grader SO utterly confused

I think as far as school shooter movies go, "Elephant" (2003) really nailed it. It feels mundane, none of the vignettes result in any story lines. And this accomplishes something very important in terms of realism that makes a point - these are regular kids, doing their regular daily routine, and none of it goes anywhere or ends up meaning anything. It doesn't dramatize anything. It's just cold, almost "boring" tragedy. And I think that's how a film about such a horrific phenomena should feel. We shouldn't gain any sort of story-based satisfaction. We shouldn't deify the victims. It should make us feel empty because there's nothing about this subject that should make us feel anything but horror and how tragedy can strike everyday people in everyday moments.

It’s a great movie and I thought it was about the kids and their lives and how all of their interesting and unique personalities and character arks that should have decades to evolve and grow are all cut short because some cringy losers were allowed by greedy politicians and cowardly libertarian gun nuts to buy guns on the internet.
It’s really a beautiful tragedy that shows how extremely tragic school shootings are without any emphasis on the shooters or the violence just the tragic loss of potential and life experience.

I get the impression that the film language these people were trying to draw upon by showing the protagonist being able to coldly kill the shooters is a transposed “final girl” archetype. But, like you said, they treat a child like a soldier, not a child.
It’s definitely a warped version of the final girl archetype. Specifically the third act badass where the girl has been through hell and back, and is now ready to fight to stay alive. Note that archetype is all about her just trying to get out of the situation by going through it, and only happens when literally everything else has failed. Also it’s usually the sign that the final girl has snapped so it’s not really the starting point for a character.

@@metronicmagician1816yeah, i actually thought that this schoolgirl's ridiculous willingness to shed blood pretty much at the drop of a hat was a really good character trait. a scriptwriter who actually knew what he was doing might have played it up as a character flaw on her part.
That and the fact that an interesting form of trauma is created + displayed throughout the movie. Most likely they just copy-pasted the character traits of a bitter and war-traumatized soldier onto a girl and called it a day (gag), but as a storywriter/scriptwriter myself I saw a massively interesting point they could've addressed but actively chose not to. A lot of Americans have been scarred by at least one major mass-shooting (mostly indirectly but for some directly). This can cause a lot of desensitization compared to onlookers who witness the current situation we're struggling with. Americans are much more willing to address violence with violence. So they show a child being forcibly put into an extremely dangerous and traumatic situation for her to react with violence. That makes sense.
Yet, they never address how awful this direction she personally took is. Despite making her look heroic and satisfied, she's now going to deal with the aftermath of a life filled with PTSD and possibly derealization issues. A future aftermath they don't show. We love to glorify the moment where we stand victorious over adversity yet we never acknowledge the issues that come with the traumatic incident. The same issues happen with veterans. We love to praise them. We love to glorify. We love to thank them and bask in the riches we acquire from countries we wage wars with. Yet, we leave them homeless. We refuse to offer them adequate mental healthcare. We never address what comes after the return. It's awful. They COULD have addressed these issues with trauma/ignoring the downsides or traumas that come with fighting these issues yet they decided to follow the status quo. Glorify the person willing to sacrifice themselves. Feed them to the wolves when you realize they've been mentally destabilized by the incident. It's disgusting.
I think the way Shapiro talks about the film is the most telling thing. He refers to a "culture war" and acts like all films in Hollywood are made with an agenda, *because he can't conceive of any other reason to create something.* It's not about art for art's sake. And that's why his art sucks. There are so many creatives in Hollywood who make films because they *adore* the art form, and that love comes through clearly. there are also many in Hollywood who create for money, or are constrained by studio demands based on profitability, and that's how we get some truly shitty films. But Shapiro creates to "win the culture war," and that's why his art will never be anything but mediocre.

I think hollywood is more "Art for money's sake." People are encouraged to make are they care about, yes - but only so long as they remember that their artistic ambition is not the goal, merely a means towards that goal: Return on investment.
Conservatives always have to declar war on something. War on terror, war on drugs, war on crime, war on immigration, culture war... and the usual wars with other countries. It's never a dialogue, a sharing of ideas. It's a struggle, a battle, something they have to *win* or else they lose something in turn.

Limited training, but enough so that he at least understood from firsthand experience what relying on the Force is like and how to do so. And that limited training is ALL that he used for the final shot in question. He wasn't pulling off any complex Force abilities or fancy tricks. He wasn't doing anything that was beyond what his limited training taught him. He merely relied on the Force to help guide him in being successful at something he was already experienced at.
So he used skills that he was previously established to have, was shown learning new skills from someone experienced in using them, and then proceeded to combine those skills for a single feat that wasn't far off from something he described having done previously. Even then, he was only able to make that shot because his allies assisted him in the battle, particularly at the climax where Vader was literally one pull of the trigger away from killing him before being ambushed by Han. He only had "zero training" if you ignore everything leading up to that moment throughout the movie.
And, of course, none of that is even even taking into account the second movie, which focuses far more on his shortcomings, or the finale of the trilogy, in which those shortcomings have been tempered but are still very much present. Even still, despite his increase in experience and skill in those films, he still just barely escapes in the second and ultimately still needs to be saved in the climax of the third.

What I personally find bewildering is that the movie that arguably kicked off the hardcore 1-man-army style action movie genre as we think of it, Rambo: First Blood has the exact OPPOSITE message. Rambo, as a character, is ALWAYS considered tragic. He is someone who just wants to live somewhere by himself so he doesn’t have to use the skills he developed. He is haunted by the inconcievable number of lives he has taken, and even TO THIS DAY that remains true. Like, the entire point of those movies is that killing strips you of your humanity. It hollows out your very soul, and thats something that has largely been lost, I think, on the audiences that consume them.
And the other film that codified the tropes, Die Hard, is about a relatively normal guy who is repeatedly shown to be in way over his head, barely survives, and spends the vast majority of the film hiding and trying to get help from people who are more qualified to deal with this.
I cried at the end of First Blood. I felt really bad for Rambo.
Read the book. John Rambo is even more tragic. Hollywood cleaned it up for the big screen.

re: the warrior ethos - the iliad is one of my favorite books and i couldn’t help but think about it as you talked about the warrior ethos and zoe killing tristan. it reminded me of achilles killing hector in book 21, except the iliad doesn’t stop there. killing hector doesn’t “fix” achilles, it just means hector’s dead. it’s only when achilles finally properly mourns patroclus and lets go of his anger that he can find something like peace.
To add on to your point, killing Hector didn't just do nothing for Achilles, it made him arguably worse. He still had all the uncontrollable rage from the death of Patroclus, but no one alive to target it towards, and thus he began to parade Hector's corpse around the walls of Troy, calling out insults to the people behind those walls, aimlessly.
And replying to both of you: the Iliad was made literally thousands of years ago, yet it tells a more interesting and morally compelling story than Run Hide Fight ever tried to. I think it shows that civilisations actually accustomed to warfare and death in the public view take a much more sober approach when it comes to portraying its consequenses. I believe this movie relies on an utterly flawed understanding of what makes the warrior ethos an interesting story.

Seeing the movie imply how her "feeling like she was in a war" was a good thing, gives me the same disturbing feeling as when a person I know who was in the military complained to a family member that I wasn't aware of my surroundings enough, and while in public I should always be watching out for someone who'll potentially hurt me. Like, I think it's fine to encourage having a few basic practices to help keep yourself safe, but shouldn't we be striving for a society where we can actually feel safe?

Atomic Blonde was nothing like James Bond. It was quite good, because of how visceral and real it portrayed a fight scene where someone actually runs out of breath, gets tired, gets injured and it affects how they fight, gets scared of loosing and needs to stop and assess the situation all during a fight where life and death is at stake, and the person they are fighting feels a similar way. I think it's one of the best films ever made in terms of a real fight being portrayed. She wasn't this invincible protagonist who didn't make mistakes and was completely relatable.

The first statement is a generalization that means 'The broad movie-going audience does not want to see *artificially-diverse* main characters'. As in, white producers/directors/writers making movies about POCs the way THEY want to portray POCs. Audiences love Jordan Peele's movies, despite them being full of black people, because audiences don't care about race; they want to see a well-made story with solid, universal themes. And, yes, Hollywood makes woke movies to appeal to the woke. Woke people tend to be wealthy white people who love to bitch about how bad _other_ white people are. Woke people make woke movies so they can pat themselves on the back and say, 'All of our opinions are right. We're the GOOD people.' Any time *anyone* makes fiction, and their focus is on politics more than story and character and craft, it's insufferable. No audience likes being nagged. Especially not by people who never examine their own morals.

It is a contradictory statement to us but also to be fair they don’t consider poc and other minorities to be people.
I was going to say they don’t consider poc to be people worth catering to, but no, straight up, I think sometimes poc are just subhumans to them, as if we’re dogs who belong at the bottom of a food chain. Or a strict immutable hierarchy. This is why any attempt to cater to a minority audience is seen as ignoring what the people really want. There’s an unspoken bracket after “people” that says (the people who really matter, anyway). This is also why any advancement a minority can do in the hierarchy to better themselves, get an opportunity, or even just get the smallest win od finally getting movies that have them in mind as the target audience, MUST be artificial to conservatives, we must inherently be taking the place of someone more deserving of that spot. Ya know, this movie pisses me off, I was in the building a fatal school shooting took place in, and even though I escaped unharmed and in a decent headspace, I still remember the terror I felt sitting in that classroom and reading the headline "2 injured one dead".
One time I was in class and we all heard what sounded like automatic gun fire. Our teacher told us to get under our desks and there was a couple minutes where I thought “what if somebody with a gun comes in here and mows us all down” and the terror/anxiety I felt has stuck with me to this day and I will never forget it. It was only after we all found out somebody set off firecrackers in the metal trash can outside our class’ door, that was when the anxiety subsided. That feeling of helplessness is traumatic to say the least

Yes, its baffling because of how different from the typicall Bond movie "Atomic Blonde" is. It would be more appropiate to compare it to Jason Bourne, and even then there's a lot of other very notable differences aside from "the main character is a woman". I think Ben Shapiro only namedropped James Bond because it is a recognizable spy character from "the good old days"
Like Bond, Atomic Blonde is based on a book; a graphic novel. It was directed by the same producer of John Wick, and you can see the fight choreography in it as well.
I looked up the rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While the critics rated it around 79%, the audience rating was a modest 64%. Meaning, there was a divergence, but audiences didn’t hate it. Why does Shapiro bring up such examples so lazily if he knows it’s very easy to debunk?
I know I'm 2 years late to this video, but I want you to know how valuable and good your critique of film literacy is, and how insightful your research and thoughts are on film media. Media literacy is lost on a lot of "movie review" channels and I'm always thoroughly impressed with how much substance and care you put into your videos.

I remember being told that if this happened to me- if a shooter was going around 1 by 1 killing children who answered yes to "Do you believe in Jesus" and letting the ones who said no live- that we students should all say yes and sacrifice our lives and go to heaven for Jesus. @@parallax256 Probably. Can't be entirely certain because Jesus wasn't really well-known until long after his death, and the earliest texts are based on oral traditions. It's certainly plausible that there was a historic Jesus, a single man who started the cult that would one day become the world's most successful religion. It's even possible that he was condemned by Roman authorities after a show-trial and killed by crucifixion - such things happened quite often, first-century Judea was not politically stable and there were a number of revolts against Roman control. But there's no surviving direct record of that trial, so... who knows? Maybe, maybe not, doesn't really matter.

I really feel llke the "good guy with a gun" narrative died in Uvalde. This movie sneers at the idea that one deserves to live in peace even if they don't have the power to do so. "Oh, you're depending on the police to protect you? Sheep!" And I think this is why this makes so many people uncomfortable, as you pointed out: the average person can't murder. Most mass shooting victims are more likely to hurl themselves in front of bullets to protect others than attack a gunman. And especially when grade school children are involved, LIKE in Uvalde, the idea that someone could fight back is pure fiction.

They literally cannot decide on a narrative to push. It's either "If you want to defund them, next time you need help, call a crackhead not the police" or "Why would you rely on the police".
In the military, we have active shooter training at least once a year. In that training, we're explicitly told NOT to be a hero and go after the gunman unless under extremely specific circumstances. We're always taught to lock and barricade doors, turn off all lights and to hide, and if you're able to escape the building, use an exit that is unseen and take shelter in another building. So you're right. People fighting back during these scenarios is unlikely and definitely not smart and lowers your chance of survival.

I live in the UK, and the only time I ever hear about school shootings is when America has another one. I have to say that I agree with your assessment of the idea of making a movie such as this. It almost put me in mind of the South Park episode, where Sharon loses her shit over school shootings, and then when SP elementary has its own, she absolutely (naturally) goes bananas. All the other adults just assume she is on her period, and being over emotional.
Through the episode, Sharon is continually trying to get people to understand the seriousness of the situation to no avail. Only to be finally resolved in accepting the 'mundanity' of the shooting, as if it's just another Tuesday in April.

The UK hasn't seen a school shooting since 1996. Following that shooting the government passed a 1997 act which almost entirely prohibited the private ownership of guns and ammunition. And since than, not a single school shooting. And very little gun crime overall. Turns out that gun control actually works.
I'm a 4th year medical student. I was admonished by a patient the other day for not 'thanking him for his service.' It got me thinking. I have a personal chip on my shoulder against the DoD, and I find unnecesary (ie., invasion, starting one, etc) to be one of the most morally abhorrent aspects of the human condition. Did the man make me any safer, more free? I fail to see how invading Mogadishu, or Iraq, or Vietnam, for that matter helped me or any other citizen in the slightest. So the question is: do I behave inauthentically just to shmooze a broken solider? Or do I not? I can empathize with vets, but like I said, I have a chip. Killing people IS and SHOULD be abhorrent. I think it'd be a lot easier though if the killee deserved it for some reason.
Most ppl who I know who have served get uncomfortable when people “thanking them for their service”. I don’t think that you owe it to anyone to thank them for their service, especially someone you don’t know who hasn’t really done anything for you. I’m sure that person thinks taking a knee during our National anthem is evil too, although I’m sure he would say he fought for our right to freedom of belief/speech

my father is military, but hes always taught me to only thank the ones who actually did something for my wellbeing. he's worked with many men and women who used the fact they were in the military to basically flex on others in a twisted way, and he always told me to be wary of the ones who cant go a single conversation without mentioning how great they are and how thankful we should be for THEM. we dont treat vets well, a lot of them have gone through HELL and lost more than we ever could, and i dont think that being involved in war means ur a horrific person, because in times like that, a lot of the, were forced to go, but the people who use those horrible incidents to boast are 100% horrific. if you meet someone who boasts about their time in, lets say, iraq or vietnam, there is a huge chance theyre going to be the worst person you will ever meet, but that doesnt mean every soldier who had to go is that way.
Anyone I know who's served don't like when people thank them because they feel weird and don't know how to respond. They did it for tuition or for the money, not because they wanted people to thank them.

As he stood there, a look of embarrassment on his face, feeling as though he really didn't deserve it since he was only getting the decoration there on the drill field because he was the sole survivor of his squad, the King gave him a look which seemed to say, "I'm only here as a stand-in for a lot of people, too, you know. Sometimes I find it embarrassing, too. We just have to get through this with dignity for the sake of all of them."
I live in some random european village and I'm not into politics at all so I don't engage with political content. I just so happen to know the daily wire because my sister is really right wing for some reason and tells me all about it (and also because of ben shapiro's heavy presence in meme culture). I think you are absolutely terrifying. My only exposure to politics has been from a conservative perspective but then here you are just making good points and spitting facts for fifty minutes straight.

James Bond was a massive development in spy/action stories, and it sparked a 'spy craze' in the 60's and everything since then, about a slick super-competent person fighting baddies, lives in the shadow of James Bond.
There were precursors to Bond, but spy work was grubby and sneaky before Bond, rather than glamorous and larger-than-life.
Especially when Atomic Blonde is a lot more of a John Le Carre homage with action beats, and Le Carre is famously wildly different from Ian Fleming’s work in tone and atmosphere, something which becomes super obvious in how Atomic Blonde is written and filmed, its not just gritty Bond its an extremely brutal realistic cold-war world, but yeah John Wick, Bond, are inspirations, though funnily enough David Leitch directed both Wick and Atomic Blonde. Also its fucking hilarious that ATOMIC BLONDE is the big sticking point of ‘look how political these woke liberals are’ when that movie was seriously the opposite, without any corporate pandering, just awesome action by a spy, I mean he could’ve named star wars or any Disney property but he named one of the best action films of 2017

I find that's one of the key points of how mature you can tell someone is: when they see an action movie, or a disaster movie, who do they see themselves in?
The example I always use is the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan: I'm always leery of anyone who is absolutely convinced they'd be one of the guys making it off of the beach in that scenario, and not one of the people who dies horribly before reaching the cliffs. It's not unique to conservatives, but conservatives in particular seem to really suffer from Main Character Syndrome.

I actually liked the rachel's challenge assemblies as a kid, just because it was a good way to develop my incredibly late (autism, abuse, other shit) emotional development and empathy skills. Also, because it made it so whenever my admittedly very, very troubled kid brain wanted to do something like that at the school, I'd remember the rachel's challenge stuff and chill out. Glad it hadn't turned into weird christian soapboxing like another comment said, at least not while they still ran them at my middle school.
This movie honestly feels like the opposite fantasy I'd have where the fifteen year old Moondust would heroically save the school from the school shooters and be showered in praise. What a weird movie.

Two things about the movie that bother me are when the dad fires into the school and kills a school shooter, and the ending where the girl hunts down and tortures the big bad.
First, the dad's part reeks of that power fantasy conservatives have after a mass shooting, where they would've put their plot armour on, drove over and effortlessly killed all the bad guys (which they say from the safety of their armchairs). None of them think about the ramifications of yet another random person with a gun rocking up to a mass shooting scene with warped ideas of what they're doing, not to mention that it's nowhere that easy to fight and take a life like that.
Second, the girl's final scene is a huge waste of potential - just think of how psychologically scarred this girl is that she becomes as sadistic as he, albeit in a pay evil unto evil way. Now think about what could've been done instead, like her realising how far she's fallen, or that she went after the wrong guy because the big bad had already shot himself and she mistook another kid for him.
A point (that I thought you were leading to) when you talked about how the lead girl seems to act like a burly hardened marine - she's a self insert for the films' target audience. In the same way that Bella in Twilight is a generic teenage girl trying to fit in, to appeal to all the teen girls trying to fit in that those books and movies appealed to, the lead girl in this movie is a burly hardened army shoot em up type, to appeal to all the grown adult men who like guns who will watch this movie.

And the teacher actually teaches different School subjects like science, math and stuff like that. The only "assassination training" they get is from a government goun that uses gym time as training. That's something completely different than those stories. In fact the person that they're trying to kill actually wants them to succeed in their academics and cares for them as students. There is a whole entire plot point of one of the characters strapping a grenade to themselves to kill the teacher. If it was inspired by those stories the teacher would be proud but no, that's not what happens. The teacher actually gets incredibly furious that they would even think about doing something that reckless and stupid. It's not even an action anime, it's literally a comedy, where most of the attempts don't work and fail in funny fashion. It sounds like you just saw a few clips and heard the name and judged it just by that.
Not gonna lie... I had no intention of watching more than five minutes of this video. Thought I'd pop in, get the gist in the intro, roll my eyes at the movie, and call it a day. 46 minutes and 55 seconds later, I find that not only did I watch (and thoroughly enjoy) the whole video, but am genuinely likely to watch it again for further examination... Well thought-out, produced, presented... Well done!

Fantastic video, reminded me a lot of Jacob Geller's video on Call of Duty, where the creators stated Call of Duty was not political. It's such a ridiculous statement, and if anything it makes the product seem less intersting to me. Are you saying your work wasn't trying to say anything? That there was no point to it? That's obviously not the case, unless you just flick paint at a wall your art is going to have meaning you have crafted, but trying to deny that in itself implies you're scared of criticism or scared of being associated with politics.
People only ever say their work is "not meant to be political" when they don't understand how much of daily life is political. Even having the privilege to afford a car is political. And every single piece of media out there is political. Some are just more neutral than others, but political nonetheless. They're just trying to avoid harsh realities and interesting conversations.

If you don't acknowledge that, then being "apolitical" is simply saying nothing at all about life. You don't have to say "vote for this specific party" to be political.
Most interesting media has something to say. I've noticed people who insist that their media is apolitical don't understand how politics colors every viewpoint in their life, down to the characters they include (whether they have black, gay, etc characters), to the themes that unintentionally shine through their writing (even just including a scene wherein a bully gets punished for bullying, is part of anti-bullying politics).
We can't escape having opinions or letting those opinions shine through in our media, why not embrace it and make sure you're telling a story that portrays the beliefs you're interested in? It's quite wishy-washy to claim that your work is apolitical and is often just a way to defend yourself from getting criticized about the things you include in the story.
@@ettaetta439You’re 100% correct, but as a thought experiment, I wonder if the attempt to be apolitical is in itself a radical pursuit. The intent to present any portrayal of life without including the ways which it has been molested by political interests specifically is interesting to me.
Of course, I’m biased as someone who exists in an “intersection” of many politically targeted groups. I don’t like the concept of “everything is political” because people think I, a human, am political solely because I exist as I am. Everything I do, think, and say must have political implications; anything I am included in, excluded from, interested or disinterested in, so on and so forth. It’s almost as if I don’t have a right to my own existential condition because the external political circumstances are “inherent” to everything about me.
Personally, I think that politics is separate from human existence, so it’s not a fact of life that everything is inherently political. I think it’s the goal of politics, for the purposes of maintaining and obtaining power, to make everything political. Existing shouldn’t be inherently political. And I think assuming everything is inherently political invites the state to have input where it deserves none.
But, again, I don’t disagree that under the circumstances we live in, it may in fact be the reality. I’m just arguing that it may not HAVE to be the case, and in all likelihood it SHOULDN’T be. And I say that because I don’t know who gave anyone the right to make me political by default. I’m a person, not a talking point.
Unpopular idea, but maybe de-politicizing certain things will actually allow us to tackle them more effectively, because they are human issues with practical problems and solutions. Not political issues with moral quandaries to be resolved with “beliefs”. For instance. People are hungry. Feed them. This is entirely logical. Homo sapiens has survived against all odds by forming cooperative groups which ensure the survival of everyone possible within that group. It does not need to turn into, “Do they deserve to be hungry? Is it right to feed them?” That, in my opinion, is how politicization ruins things. Now you’ve introduced meritocracy and hierarchy to a simple issue of group survival, under circumstances where there is no shortage of the necessary resources. Etc, etc.
Personally, I think it would be a great experiment to see something that was deliberately apolitical rather than complacently apolitical.

It's often the only way I can get my point across to people and explain privilege or how society disadvantages people in subtle ways to people who don't understand that concept or think that bigotry is solely limited to shouting slurs.
I await the day we depoliticize human lives, but the people who use "I'm apolitical" as a way to avoid criticism of the beliefs they unintentionally put into their creation are not a good way to do it, so I criticize them for it. Thank you for such a long and insightful comment.
I have so many things to say about this movie, so forgive the rant:
One other thing I think they got wrong about shootings is the very specific kind of fear for people in them. Sure, teenage white boys acting as violent political zealots is scary, but so many of the perspectives from real survivors is about fear. The waiting. The randomness of the deaths. The fact that it could be your friend, your classmate, your lab partner, who's suddenly gone from your life. The mass herds of screaming, afraid people. Being hunted down in a place you already dislike, the idea that your high school could become your grave. That’s terrifying.
But Run Hide Fight isn't about being afraid. Stories about real survivors saving lives are never about proving a political point. It's not like they wrestle the gun away from the scary conservative kid and then curb-stomp them while screaming "THIS IS FOR THE LEFT." But in Run Hide Fight it's exactly that. It's about sticking it to the bad guys and not about humans inherently wanting to protect other humans in life-or-death situations.
I think another thing that lends to Zoe's characterization as a teenage assassin is her choosing to kill the bad guys with a gun. The "Fight" part of surviving a shooting is about using what you have around you as protection-- textbooks, metal desks, etc-- to the point of some school supplies being manufactured specifically in the case of shootings (like bulletproof backpacks). If they wanted a badass warrior protagonist while still having her be a kid, it would be a much better idea to have her use school supplies and tools. That, on its own, is so dystopian that if you didn't know that it's a real thing taught to children, it almost sounds like made up symbolism.

Haven't watched it yet, but just reacting to your very early statement "an action movie about a school shooting... yay!" I think that there is potentially a fascinating and necessary movie to be made about the unspoken element of wish fulfilment represented by mass shootings which almost certainly helps enable them- the fantasy of being the hero who stops them, and dangerous that sort of Jouissance is. Observe And Report probably gets to this aspect of the American Id best, but the fact is that the (not exclusively but largely) right wing really wants something like this to happen in front of them so they can be a hero. The fact that in reality heroes usually get shot like the ending of Night of The Living Dead never seems to factor in.
A more sophisticated and honest addressing of this impulse is something I'd very much like to see.

No, heroes do not usually get shot. Usually, if a good guy with a gun has a gun, they point it at the shooter and the shooter stops shooting. Because predators of any kind typically want to prey on easy victims. But the thousands and thousands of cases like this never make the news, so they're invisible. You're mistaking what the news presents from actual, boring reality.

And I think a toxic side effect of this Hero Wish is that they feel actually *jealous* of people who did go through these tragedies, or even contempt that they were given an "opportunity" and didn't take it to fulfill the fantasy of heroism. I’m watching this video after your discussion of The Sound of Freedom. The total whiplash I got from Ben Shapiro saying “there’s a reason why people look at you, if you don’t like these movies, as if your a bad person” and then realizing that that’s what Ben’s audience did for those who didn’t like Sound of Freedom is wild.

This came out while I was in highschool, and watching that trailer IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL made my heart drop and my blood boil. I never saw the movie itself, but its EXISTENCE has sat heavy in my brain since it came out. Im commenting this before finishing the video so if you make this point I apologize, but the idea of a movie placing the responsibility of stopping a school shooting on a CHILDS shoulders is INSANE- we should not be telling kids to run back in the building and be a hero!! So many days I spent terrified after threats were made, comforting friends and younger students. To see that be made into an action movie made me want to scream
The unintentionally funniest self-own in this movie is the main shooter (the one who's supposed to be the villain) often spouts conservative talking points.

It's because most of the real life perpetrators of mass shootings (school and otherwise) are right wing, and so their ideology in this movie is right wing, and the people who made this movie are right wing and just think what they are saying is normal and not "propaganda" and hence not ironic, just normal. It's like inception, you never know how deep it goes.

Like, he's not completely and absolutely terrible as far as debating goes, but I get the impression that the only reason why he ever really comes off as clever or collected in debates is more by virtue of the people he's up against. There's a reason why you pretty much always see him debating with largely inexperienced students rather than anyone that's actually, you know, experienced in fields relevant to the discussions.
It's like challenging me to a debate about which cars are the most well-made - my knowledge of cars basically amounts to being able to point at something and say "I'm pretty sure that's a car," so someone with even very basic knowledge of vehicle engineering is going to look brilliant compared to me in regards to that subject. But put that person with basic knowledge of vehicle engineering up against someone whose entire profession revolves around designing them, and odds are they're going to look a lot less impressive. So if their goal is to look impressive and embarrass the ones they're debating, who are they more likely to pick? An expert who knows as much as (and possibly even more than) them, or someone who's knowledge is shaky at best?

The noise of the shooting/car crash not being noticed by anyone was one of the most immersion-breaking things for me. Guns are WAY louder than TV and movies make them seem, like hear them from miles away level loud. And have these people ever heard a shotgun being fired indoors? It’s absolutely deafening, especially with no ear protection on. With the empty, echoey hallways that schools tend to have, every classroom that’s along the same hall as the cafeteria should be hearing the gunfire well enough to get people’s attention.

A school shooting movie was a perfect opportunity to do a tragic horror movie, with the shooter(s) being an artificially created "monster" by the real antagonist, sure they could still make the kid shoot another kid but with a long silent scene of them knowing that they didn't solve anything by killing and that the entire thing will happen again in a cycle until they tackle the real monster, society.
Maybe the movie's trying to make the argument that, no, maybe sometimes society isn't to blame. Maybe sometimes individual people are awful, and that individual people are most responsible for the actions they take.

I am surprised the movie didn't establish that all the emergency personnel are limp wristed woke lefties who stood outside the school singing Kumbaya and only the conservative gun loving characters were actually useful in saving the students by conducting a full on SWAT like trained veterans, all while reciting a prayer in unison, each blast of their guns setting the cadence for their praise of god for their good fortune in arming them with the skills to shoot down kids with guns.

As Legal Eagle stated, cops aren’t actually legally obligated to endanger themselves to protect civilians. Plus, states that are less strict with police don’t really keep their police departments accountable for maintaining training standards.

Your breakdown of the movie was a hell of a lot more interesting than the actual movie. I saw it already, wasn't especially impressed, but when you were broke it down I was like, "That sounds like a pretty cool movie."
I remember seeing the trailers ALLLLL over RUclips. And the clip I remember most is, "They won't remember you. They'll remember ME." It made me think the movie was going to analyze America's obsession with violence and elevating killers over victims. I'm a true crime junkie, and I've seen a huge shift over the past decade from essentially worshipping serial killers to humanizing victims and remembering them as full human beings with hopes, plans, hobbies, loved ones, and a future that was taken from them. So many mass shooters kill to leave a "legacy," and some news outlets have decided to deny them this by not even reporting their names (a move I agree with). So, I naively thought, "Oh. This is a movie about decentering the entitled boys who shoot up schools as a way to satisfy their stunted egos, and instead emphasizes the heroism of everyday survivors who are thrust into this horror without warning and will be forever changed by it. It becomes a legacy of those who choose to answer to the call on the worst day of their lives and save others."
And then I clicked the ad and it brought me to the Daily Wire website and I was like, "Oh. No, it's not going to be any of that, never mind."
Genuinely fascinating how they can accidentally unearth a nugget of genuinely artful ideas, but then toss them out in favor of thinly veiled bigotry

@aprilshadows8212 While that is a fair perspective to have, it is also very important to have at least SOME gun control. No civilian should be able to own military grade weapons, and there definitely needs to be a system in place for who can get guns. An idea that I think could work is having a licensing and registration system somewhat similar to what we have for automobiles.

Not that that necessarily means that the movie should be comparable in quality to the masterpiece that is Bone Tomahawk, since producers don't always have any creative input in a movie.

I'm not American, so the politics surrounding gun control and school shootings doesn't really hit that hard for me, honestly none of the implications ever even occurred to me while I was watching it, I just saw it as a moderately entertaining if rather clichéd action thriller that engaged me at the time and I promptly forgot all about after. I agree that it's nothing like up to standards of Zahler's work, though, Bone Tomahawk is one of my top 10 favourite movies of all time.

If it's ok for a 17 year old girl to become a surprise one-woman-army it's ok in all those "woke agenda" movies he constantly whines about. The guy is a joke, and a bad one at that.

@@herrschneider5310 yeah, I'm not much of a fan of Shapiro either, he speaks some sense but also a whole lot of nonsense and I don't like his dishonest debating style, or the way he always picks extremely easy and uninformed opponents. I tend to be broadly more sympathetic to the conservative side in the so-called "culture wars" (politically speaking I'm largely non-partisan/centrist, but I do think mainstream cinema and media in general is being absolutely destroyed by, for want of a better or more expressive term, "wokeness" and political agenda, be that the new Oscars ruling that any movie has to meet cast, crew and story diversity standards to be eligible for nomination, or the fact that the works of Ian Fleming and Ronald Dahl are now being butchered by "sensitivity readers"). But at the same time, I absolutely hate hypocrisy (I was against the Bud Light trans campaign, for example, but I was equally against the ad campaign by that conservative-owned watch brand that countered it by featuring biological women in sports; I believe that all companies that sell commodities should refrain from having a political agenda, whether I happen to agree with their points or not- just sell me the fucking product). And, on reflection, I can see why people would consider this movie hypocritical. It's just not something I picked up on while watching it myself, because like I said I don't automatically view school shootings as a political topic, not being American. As a rule, I believe that while it is impossible to fully separate art from politics, the latter should always, always take a back seat to production value, acting skills, writing, etc. And I didn't see any overt political or sociopolitical messaging in the movie's dialogue, which is why it annoyed me far less than the "woke" ones do, even though I do agree that the implicit political messaging does make Shapiro a hypocrite (tbf while I absolutely take your point about Shapiro hating political movies and having made a political movie himself, I'm not sure if the whole girlboss thing is a very valid example here, because unlike with all the woke feminist superhero movies and what have you, A. the protagonist of Run Hide Fight is fallible, makes mistakes, and is also forced to rely on the help of certain men at times and B. there were no cringy "all it needed was a woman"-type lines like you get all over the superhero movies- the protagonist is a girl because she just happens to be one, not because the writers wanted to include an empowering feminist message).
I did think Terror On The Prairie (the only other Daily Wire movie I've seen so far) was pretty good, though (again, Gina Carano's character does come out on top, but not because she's a feminist girlboss- it's made explicitly clear that she's completely overpowered and only stays one step ahead thanks to a combination of cunning and sheer luck, and none of the dialogue is tinged with cringy "girl power" moments). Not a masterpiece by any means, but a solid and gripping Western triller nonetheless, and very nicely shot. Whatever one thinks of the DW's politics, they clearly do have some artistic merit as filmmakers, which as a cinephile largely uninterested in politics except where they affect art is always going to be my own personal priority.
