    D Blu-ray sales that information was omitted. Think about it, you guys gotta be smarter than this

    I agree about the direction of Star Wars under Kennedy, but your financial assessment doesn’t make sense. The initial purchase price can’t be factored against individual projects. It isn’t a realistic indicator that any business would use.
    You would track the revenue from projects and then project that over a ten to fifteen year period to see if you are on track to profit over the long haul. On top of that, there is no good way for outsiders to track the profitability of the streaming shows. Then we need to add in revenue from licensing and merchandise, which probably comes close to equaling the box office.
    In summary, you are trying to bend, omit and cherry pick the numbers to prove that Kennedy isn’t doing a good job. In fact, you are correct, but financially, Star Wars has been a tremendously successful investment.

      Exactly this - we have nerds that don’t know how balance sheets and earnings work and are looking at only the movies. And shame on Forbes for not showing the full picture. Almost feels like a hit piece. I agree a lot of things need fixing I mean the Starcruiser, the sequels, alienating the core fans….there are lots of things wrong but we need to deal in realty and the merch is worth more than the movies as an investment.

    • @robmurphy4221

    The movies have never been a focus of revenue. Parks, merchandise, and free ad strength from association easily sky rockets over what they would return on a movie or series. Official licensed products are now Disney owned, meaning they do not have to buy or rent rights to sell merch and those who want to use their properties must share profits on products they make with their likeness. For every $200+ lightsaber, to every $30 Lightning Lane pass, to every Jedi costume and Stormtrooper mask they rake in cash. Movies and shows are just ways to broaden merch sales. Example, now you can have your very own Asoka WHITE lightsaber crystals, or a baby Yoda alexa dot cover, or a new lego set with the Mandolorian's new ship.

    That accounting methodology is really dumb. The reality is that they purchased an asset that is generating revenue. Aside from the revenue generated, if they chose to sell the asset tomorrow, they would make up all of the money spent, and then some. Revenue generated is just a cherry on top.

      There is something to that, though I don’t think the asset is worth $4 billion anymore. It’s definitely depreciated.

    I definitely did not like the sequels and what they did to Star Wars, but we have gotten good content. Unfortunately, the bad stuff IS THERE and it is GLARINGLY bad. KENOBI comes to mind, which is tragic. Most of the animated content has been quite good tho, from Rebels to the 7th season of Clone Wars, to Tales of the Jedi and The Bad Batch. The Mandalorian, BOBF and Ahsoka have all ranged from decent to very good. There are things among the good stuff which I personally would not trade for other stuff. Especially within the aforementioned television shows. Andor I don't really care for and Solo was ok. Would I rather the last two sequels, Forces of Destiny, Kenobi, Resistance, Young Jedi Adventures and most of the comics and books NOT EXIST? YES. Kenobi is especially egregious, because it COULD have been done better. It could have had higher production values and it could have been better written. Alas. But I can ignore all of that. When it's good, however, it's GOOD. Does Kathleen Kennedy need to go? YES. A RESOUNDING YES. Not only for her total lack of understanding of Star Wars, but for her insertion of current social issues in these movies, and for a lot of other reasons too specific to note here. But would I give up the good stuff we have gotten? No. Especially The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, which may not be perfect, but neither are George Lucas' films. Anyway, those are my two cents.

    So the movies made a lot of money just not the 4 billion.
    What other movie studio is held to this standard? In my book if a movie makes money it makes money!
    They spent 4 billion on something they own forever its a long term investment with more movies,tv shows , products, still to come! The 4 billion and more will be made over time.
    It was also stated in this same article that no profit from merch ,DVD , games sales ect ect was included in the totals.

    • @2Hats74
      @2Hats74 5 месяцев назад +1

      Very few movie studios splash out $4 billion to buy a bunch of IP.
      But even accepting your position at face value, it still refutes pixie dusters who claim that Disney is crushing it with their Star Wars investment. At best you can say they are doing OK over the long-term.

  • @munny_1206

    If it cost $2 billion to make all five movies and the first movie made $2 billion, everything after the first movie is profit. While technically it’s still not profit until they recoup the $4.1 billion, it’s only been nine years since the release of the first movie since the acquisition of Lucasfilms. Also, looking at that chart you briefly cited from this hit piece (probably orchestrated by Ike Perlmutter & Nelson Peltz) I can see merchandising isn’t included in there. If you view it like that it sounds like a W! Like everyone’s favorite genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist’s murderbot likes to say “ clearly you’ve never made an omelette”

    Yet Another hater channel, so boring🥱 the web is teaming with this stuff. Disney is not on a time schedule to make a profit. They own the properties. The real reasons...Disney wanted to bring in the fanboy money since they had the female/princess money locked down. Then they proceeded to say the force is female, turned their back on the original fanbase trying to make the new fandom the new female/princess/star wars- money spenders. When this didnt work they proceeded to insult, disparage, and claimed racism and misogynistic because the original fanbase didnt like strong women. No, we didnt like mary sues and terrible writing, please consider these strong women, Ripley(Alien franchise), Sarah Conner (Terminator), Dana Scully (X Files), Princess Leia (Star WArs), Zoë Washburne (Firefly), Nyota Uhura (Star Trek), Captain Kathryn Janeway - (Star Trek), River Tam (Firefly), Trinity (the Matrix), Gamora (Guardians of the Galaxy), Natasha Romanoff Marvels Avengers etc., Michonne (The Walking Dead)and the list goes on. So...Lazy writing and agenda driven corporate foolery is the actual reason. Look at the first three phases of the MCU and how amazing they were. The control was held in Ike Perlmutters hands. The following phases, (4 & 5) went into kevin Fiege's and have been a majority of trash. The same thing with Kathleen Kennedy, the franchise killer, sha has destroyed three IP's, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Willow. I havent even brought Blackrock, Vanguard and the DEI destruction of Hollywood into the discussion but those addition's to the recipe of destruction are there, do the reading...

      @robmurphy4221 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@Needler13 it doesn’t “sell” like it used to for sure but it still sells and I think we’d be naive to believe otherwise. And not sure how old you are but we had “peg warmers” back well before the Black Series (before the Dark times of TLJ which I will agree took a BIG chunk of that legendary merch $$ away and is partially why Toys R Us folded) but it’s still a money maker and I’d love to see the cost VS profit on that as it would either (as you may be suggesting) make it worse but I have a feeling it makes the whole thing profitable because let’s not forget Disney had about 6 years of Merch before TLJ and before that it was a billion dollar merch property even toppling Barbie as the top toy line - so let’s be super careful and say maybe 250 mil a year for 6 years (we just don’t know though so this is just for fun) assuming that is the profit per year - you’d have more than a billion before TLJ - throw in parks and ILM (which in its own right is a movie making machine) heck even licensing with Fortnite and my bet is Disney is profiting even though they should be doing so much better. But it’s helpful to think of the full picture as these are JUST the movies and a part of the income stream. Is the IP still what it was worth when they bought it is anyone’s guess but I don’t believe it’s nearly as dire as this very single focused and one dimensional article suggests. Let’s hope either way it kicks their sad asses to improve though.
