Thanks bro I noticed this too. And even as a cantonese speaker I find it difficult to explain the difference between the 2nd and 5th tone I only know if the word is in 2nd or 5th tone.

Great video! I have a question about how the Cantonese (jyut ping) tones 2 and 5 are pronounced in Mandarin. All the Mandarin mapping diagrams including the symbol indicate that I am supposed to slide down and then up but when I hear your examples from 3:57-4:14 I just hear a very low flat very similar to what tone 4 does in Cantonese. Pleco pronounces it in the same way as you did in your examples. Is there a reason why I can hear low flat instead of the v shape in Mandarin? And which one should I be imitating?

Good question - sorry I just saw this. I'll make a video on this but Mandarin tone 3 isn't exactly a literal V. Most native speakers when speaking it really fast end up instead just dipping down into one part of the v but only go up a little so it ressembles a fish hook more than go down then go up the same amount.
So it actually sounds similar to tone 4 in Cantonese, but not tone 4 in Mandarin.
Realisitcally, imitate the fish hook rather than the v because when you start speaking fast and in sentences, the v is not practical and most native speakers don't go all the way down and all the way back up for every word.

@@CantoMando Cool! I found a video a few weeks ago where she was saying that the V is used more when spoken in isolation. Also whether you hear a V or not can depend on the tone of the word next to it. A lot of what she said matches with the explanation that you just gave above so that's good news for me!
