Watches collecting is the highest level of "Branding game" where the functional usage of watches was twisted into "Lifestyle, trend, hobbies, valuable possession"...it is no longer "A watches" it is a "personal + emotional + attachment", riding on basic instinct of human evolution as gatherer and collector. I have been following the development of watches branding game since 1994 when I started my interest in watches, the marketing strategy and branding success or failure in certain watches brand has given me so much learning in marketing. Is good to mention the story of how Panerai revived its brand to great success and make a great come back.
So the 18 wheeler analogy didn’t carry all the way through. And...? The rest of the story was spot on. Nicholas Hayek was a genius in that he used the technology of the day, which was sub-planting the mechanical watch industry, to prop up said industry! How cool is that?! Then he performed surgery on that industry thus saving it’s life. Name another business where this has happened? Using new technology to basically revive old technology? Who else is telling this story? Great job CQ! Let the haters make their own videos!
Great video! And also I would like to say that Swatch for a lot of us growing up in the 80's, was our entry to the watch world. I received my Swatch (The McGregor model) as a gift from my mother then I was about 8 years old, I still have it and use it sometimes!
It worked in this case, but taking your profits from a thriving business to prop up a business line that is obsolete and failing is a good way to destroy your thriving business as well.
Have to agree with others on this video, a complex story told by a guy who thinks the audience are all 12 years old....such a wasted opportunity, why not use someone with an adult’s vocabulary and encyclopaedic knowledge, like Tim Mosso, for a task like this?
I will watch and listen to CQ anyday, he loves watches and it shows. I also watch every show Tim does, Tim is just great. I would rather CQ, josh, jason, jon, brian and mike than have 7 Tims and nobody else.
Excellent summary of the person and the birth of the Swatch!
Just subscribed because of this video. Loved this.

Amazing !!! Compulsive viewing.

Nicolas G.Hayek is THE watchmaking icon of the 21st century. A man, far ahead of his time.
Awesome analogy on explaining the Quartz crisis which was a blow from the powerhouse seiko and then have a swatch watch save the day👍🏽
Can’t wait for TGV’s classroom story.
Really dope video.
Nice video, concise and well told. Well done in a few minutes.

No illustration can ever be followed through 100%, that's why it's an illustration....
CQ, what watch are you wearing here?
Good segment CQ. 👍👍👍
CQ is the man!

As always enjoyable video
Enjoyed the video
Next do Salma Hayek
😁
I thought the same😊
Awesome Vid
can you do a video on Jorg Hysek please?
great video
cool history
Great info, thanks man. Hayek is the messiah, I thought it was Gérald Genta lol
It worked in this case, but taking your profits from a thriving business to prop up a business line that is obsolete and failing is a good way to destroy your thriving business as well.
What Hayek proved was that high-end mechanical watches were not then, nor are they now, obsolete and he bet everything that and won big-time.
Fascinating . Amazing piece of historical vision. The great side of capitalism encapsulated in a single story. Well done CQ.
I think CQ is one of the most powerful people in the watch industry... let me tell you why!...
May I know who is CQ?
@@Qieqi CQ is the host, the guy speaking in the video 🤓👍🏼
why?
@@user-wi9nn6dz8w oh I just think he's a cool guy and knows his stuff...
So basically a 18 wheeler truck fell off the cliff then? Sorry, but I could not watch it.
Not just that, he actually forgot to mention that the 18 wheeler actually co-invented the Quartz movement...
Most unnecessary analogy in history
This guy really ruined a good story. Just not a good story teller. Sorry

This is sad relying on analogy to make your point.
It is a good analogy, though, because that's pretty much how it went down.
No.
