Yes she is the original vocalist of this track. Her name is Gwen Dickey also known by her stage name Rose Norwalt. Car Wash was Rose Royce's most successful single as well as their debut single. It was also the title track for the motion picture with the same name. Other hits are I Wanna Get Next To You, Wishing on a Star, and I'm Going Down. Mary J. Blige did a remake of the classic I'm Going Down.
I was a teenager in the 70's , Rose Royce was a group with a female lead. Other songs they made were "Car Wash " from the Movie by the same name , and the song " Wishing on a Star " . Mary J. Blige remade " Love Don't Live Here Anymore " in the 90's.
Hi India, Rose Royce was one of the groups where you looked forward to their next single hitting the charts. A standard of the Disco era. This ladies talent was obvious & her voice was one of those you could listen to all day. Also loved (Car Wash & Wishing on a Star) by them.
Rose Royce is the name of band and they were really big is the 1970s! They had a huge hit with this song and Car Wash! I believe they were the originators of this song! I also liked their song Ooh, Boy I Love You So!
I loved Royal Royce. They where a wonderful group. And Gina's voice was so beautiful you could tell she had seen herself through some very hard times in life.
thanks for posting, i go back to 1978,and now am still eared to this passionate song of despair and sadness. it touches your soul, hits at the center of your heart. gwen dickey is such a great singer, a fine lady. the writer miles gregory, as i read, was going through a very hard illness when he wrote the song. many a great song is the result of a tragic stance in life. i wonder what finally happened to this man. luv yah man for this soulful song.its timeless, a classic.
Rose Royce🌹 is the name of the group she leads vocal in a few songs 🎵 they're one of my all time favorite group you need to hear one of their classic title Please Return Your Love To Me
Yes, this is most definitely the 1978 original...I was 6 when this song first hit and all my older relatives were jammin' this record night and day...Gwen Dickey's voice was the real deal, I see she made you feel that vibe!
I remember this very well, and also Rose Royce's other big hits, like "Car Wash" and my personal favourite, "Wishing On A Star." Gwen has a great voice and she was also a great mover on stage but was sadly paralysed in an accident in 2010 and lost almost all the use of her legs . But it didn't stop her and she still performs live as a solo artist.
So many hits. Is it love you’re after, Put your money where your mouth is, Best Love, Rose Royce Express, Wishing on a star, long list of great tracks. I’m going down, I wanna get next to you, Do your dance, Makes you feel like dancing, Ooh boy......Great tracks.
Es una cancion extraordinaria esa orquestacion subiendo al comienzo al estilo a day in the life me da escalofrios y la voz de esta mujer hermosa fuerte expresiva.
Man I was about 6-7 when I heard this and would listen to it all the time. Actually my mother was listening to it because she was going through my father cheating on her! I grew up on all the great r&b music of the 70s and 80s. R&b has remained my favorite genre of music as of today!! Fast but mostly ballads. Maybe because I heard my mother playing slow songs all the time. I owe my mother for my vast knowledge and appreciation for R&B music. Unsung is still a favorite show I’ve watched on RUclips. I love to see how the groups came up and then fell out. Anyway I’m rambling now. God bless!
Really like Rose Royce. I was disappointed that they were not more successful. This song really pulls on my heartstrings. Being abandoned just kills your self-esteem, be it by friends or a lover. The strength and soulfulness of her voice just reaches inside of you. When you are in love everything looks new and shiny (even bad stuff seems not so bad). But a life without love just seems cold, empty, and gray.
As a teenager i was rocking this bad boy...still it's on replay. Such power and romantic vibes from this group. My boo loves when i surprise him and sing this🤭
When I heard this again in the 1990s, I did have a slight giggle at the 'Disco drum' that became one of the less fortunate signatures of the scene. Beautiful song and beautifully performed.
Holy crap. I learned something today. I did not know that Madonna's version was a cover. 🤯 I did know they did the original "Wishing on a Star" but ooooo.... I suck.
This was one of 3 slow songs that I first started to slow dance at the end of a disco beautiful they also did I'm wishing on a star the other song was Emotions by Samantha Sang thank you stay safe 😷✌
I'll have to search for the studio version. I think I've heard it a bunch of times on 'smooth jazz' radio stations. The world needs MORE of those things.
This classic done in one take! There was dysfunction within the group thus the frustration came out and it can be felt in this song. Madoona also covered this song.
When this came out I was about 20 and I could turn the lights out and put the headphones on and listen to rose royce all night. I think I listened to Donna Sumner more though. During the day it was mostly Al Green 😁
Rose Royce is touring now - saw her last year with Morris Day and some others - she also sang the Original "Car Wash" - before Christina Aguilera sang it in the more modern movie later ... girl I have been buying records since I was 6 years old ... I was a white child listening to black music when it wasn't cool ... her voice always could just make you feel something.
I really wish you would play more Rose Royce. Let's see now, there's "Is It Love Your After", "Do Your Dance", "Ooh Boy" and "Wishing On A Star". Any one of those would be great.
The group Rose Royce is the original singers of this song, I met the man who wrote the song named Miles, I forget his last name, but he was a cool guy, me and my friends use to chill at his house, we gave him emotional support, until he died of cancer, he wrote other songs for this group, but this song was his one.
Hi India, Rose Royce is actually a band. This song is good but react to the better one's like; I Wanna Get Next To You, Wishing On A Star or Car Wash. They were really big in their day(70's). Those songs I listed were a few of their bigger hits. I Wanna get Next To You is beautiful. Have a listen.
WISHING ON A STAR - another classic by them
Please listen to wishing on a star
Great song and so is Wishing on a star.
I ❤ WISHING ON A 🌟 & OLD SKOOL JAMS ❤🙌🙌
@@lilyj9924 I t was not a hit song , but I like Rose Royce's version over the big hit version. Rose Royce had some good songs.

I've read that they wrote it for Gladys Knight and the Pips but they were busy touring so the music director hired Rose Royce!
I adore this song. ❤️ Goosebumps.
"I Wanna Get Next To You" from Car Wash is fantastic; if you watch the movie, it's such an emotional moment when this plays.
AAAAAAhhhhhhhhh Throw my panties on the stage 😆
yes oh yes what i was thinking the moment i clicked on this.im going down is the next obvious.
Sweet soul and beautiful vocals
Her music is E P I C! This still makes my eyes water! The Pain in her voice brings back so many memories!

This was HUGE in my teenage years. Great song! Check out Denise Williams as well: Silly, and another song: Free
Every girl who fancied herself a singer was belting out "Silly".
Black Butterfly is another good one from Denice Williams.

Absolutely love this song. I was aware of song by Madonna doing it on her album;Like A Virgin. She also did a music video.😊
This classic done in one take! There was dysfunction within the group thus the frustration came out and it can be felt in this song. Madoona also covered this song.

Wishing on A Star I think was their biggest hit. But , you should hear this song done by Madonna!
I really wish you would play more Rose Royce. Let's see now, there's "Is It Love Your After", "Do Your Dance", "Ooh Boy" and "Wishing On A Star". Any one of those would be great.

I had no idea this wasn't a Madonna song.
i prefer madonna, though
Jimmy Nail??? also did a version before Madonna
Really!!Madonna ain't 💩.
Seriously?
I knew this song first through Madonna’s cover of it. Years later as an adult I was delighted to discover the original track.
200,000!!!!! Yay India!!!!
