CAT TALKING TO SNOW | WHY?

  • Опубликовано: 9 сен 2024
  • Yesterday it was snowing for the first time in a long time in The Netherlands. And Smoothie started to "chatter" to the snow. Does anyone know why?
    First I thought she just chattered to birds, but there were no birds behind the window. Just snow falling down. Fortunately Milkshake - who was very confused as usual - tried to comfort her.
    Thanks for watching! Don't forget to subscribe! :)

    they chatter do to excitement, when they see prey, etc, its a natural reflex for them when they become excited or filled with anticipation. it not only makes them appear more friendlier to prey (when they use that technique to hunt) but also to express excitement about something new.. they can exhibit this same chatter behavior when they give birth and they will chatter to their babies too in a soothing way. my cat chatters when i produce the bag of forbidden treats because she becomes excited to eat them lol. its a natural happy expression no need to worry.

    • @SysterYster
      @SysterYster 6 лет назад +21

      Jennie Marie But they don't normally do that when they're hunting. They stalk quietly. They do it when they want to hunt but for some reason can't. Like in the case of a fly in the roof. They can't reach it. They get excited/frustrated.

  • @edythemckee2896
    @edythemckee2896 6 лет назад +409

    We call that behavior: chatter. Cats do it when they are watching birds or mice that they can't catch. The cat is often quite tense and excited. The cat's view of the snow flakes maybe set off the hunting instinct, but she couldn't catch the flakes. If a cat could hunt the prey they get quiet, and lurk around. So it's like a frustration reaction.

  • @Battury
    @Battury 6 лет назад +36

    So everyone here is correct in saying that cats "chatter" or "chirp" when they see prey they can't reach, but it is important to remember that cats do not meow to communicate with each other. Not naturally, at least. Vocalizing for communication is more or less a learned behavior (save for growling at each other or hissing). In this particular instance, we can see Smoothie also doing slow eye blinks, which is another sign she was trying to communicate to YOU. The chattering and slow eye blinks combined tell me she was seeing something that was a hyper-stimuli and needed to find a way to vocalize to you (and Milkshake apparently, haha) that there was something strange or exceedingly interesting happening that was in need of investigation. The slow blinks were just to remind you that she loves you and she didn't want to worry you 😊

    Smoothie was talking to the snow. cats chatter when they are excited and stalking prey like birds and even when they see a fly in the house. i always say they are talking to the birds and flies trying to lure them into their mouths. there are actually several theories as to why they chatter or chirp. if she has never seen snow she may think that it is actually some kind of flying possible prey. i think it's so cute when they do that. yeah they didn't look too thrilled about the snow. my cats don't care for it much either.

    We refer to that as the "fly noise". Our cats make the noise whenever they see one. Once we asked one of our cats, "Why are you saying 'fly'? Are we that beautiful?" We turned around and yes, there was a fly on the wall.
    There is a very specific word that cats use for "housefly", and as you keep your home so immaculately clean, we can only imagine that this is Smoothie's first experience of something magically flying through the air, of approximately that size.
