    Been using sharpies for years.
I tie with white thread and color code the thread head of the fly to indicate if the fly is unweighted, lightly or heavily weighted to make them quicker to select from the box.
I also "tint" the underbody of UV Resin buzzer with a Sharpie before adding the final coat of resin. Works nicely nicely for multicolored chironomids where you want just a hint of color where the green fades to red.
Red marker on a silver body coated with UV resin makes a nice bloodworm imitation.
As a side bar, the Sharpies will permanently mark porous materials but can often be removed from nonporous surfaces with Isopropyl alcohol (99%) or Denatured alcohol (95%). I haven't tried rubbing alcohol.
    Cheers!

Tied up some murdick minnows in white and took my wifes sharpies to them. That was way too much fun. I need to build a few dozen more just to color 'em.

That’s a great idea! Good fly to try the sharpies on too. 🙂
