I'm going to agree with others who have suggested the tribute to Led Zep at the Kennedy center as performed by " Heart" . I have to admit it really got me in my feels . In your discoveries in music keep in mind the era and what was going on in the world . My generations music is an anthem to the times we lived in and it was quite active. Sooo many issues and movements going on simultaneously. Knowing what was going on historically can make these songs hit differently.

No Fear here, I have listened to this song hundreds of times and ONLY heard great musicians who sometimes write their songs in an ambiguous way. Glad you looked up the meaning which is mostly what the song is about. There is smack talk about Led Zeppelin out there, mostly unfounded. Great Job!

Mug, at the time the song was written, it had a lot of different meanings, please do not forget, it was the time of the Cold War. We here in Europe never knew if we would see the next day. Nuclear bombing was like the sword of Damocles hanging over our heads. Some took drugs to forget the thread, others found other ways to blend out the fear, we lived in. This was everything going on in those late 60s and early 70s. The constant threat of nuclear war, the "Peace not War" movement, the materialism and young people longing for a better future. Sadly, the newer generations are turning into selfish snowflakes that would look down on what we were all about. We were about letting everyone be themselves, not looking down on people that think differently. There was no such thing as cancel culture!

It's a song of hope and redemption and that guy killing it is one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time...easy top 3 in my opinion, if not the best.
Now you need to see the Kennedy Centre honoring this group, and see the Obamas rocking out to this song by Heart.
More so, Robert and Jimmy brought to tears by Heart's performance. It was spectacular!

I was around when all the great music from the early seventies came around. But I was brought up religiously, and was literally afraid to even listen to bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, because of all the religious propaganda about the music being Satanic. Religion is a scourge. I finally was able to appreciate these bands after i moved out, went to college, and shed my old prejudices.
I was 10 in 1970...when I first heard Zeppelin...I was hooked!!

Jimmy Page was a guitar legend from back in the 60's and his guitar work is completely different is tone and sound than Eddie Van Halen. Both are at the top of the pantheon of rock guitarists but Jimmy had a much more blues background to his music. One other note about the solo, he played it different all of the time so he was really just noodling around the melody. Much more fun when you aren't sure where you are going when the solo starts each time.
It's a beautiful song. A song of hope. I can hardly believe some people in America (hopefully not many) think it's to do with the devil. No such thing here I find it both worrying and very sad.

We saw them a couple of times. They were so good they would sell out stadiums without any opening bands and play for 3 or more hours. The lyrics to a lot of their songs are vague on purpose so everyone could interpret them however they want.
This song is musically and to some extent lyrically based on old English folk songs. Very beautiful.
My take on the title: she’s so rich and pampered she could buy a stairway to Heaven.

They played from the late 60’s to 1980 when the drummer died. They were the greatest. The lead singer Robert Plants 5 year old son passed away during this time and Robert was in a horrible car accident and almost lost his leg. I’m sure Robert believes in n heaven and believes his little son is there waiting for him.
My heart sank when you stopped at the beginning of the guitar solo but at least you recognized the mistake and went back. I've never heard of this song being sacrilegious. "Sometimes words have two meanings" is just that. People say something but mean something else.
It's referred to as a "double neck" guitar, with 12 strings on the upper neck and 6 strings on the lower neck.
The guitarist is Jimmy Page (who also wrote the song) - he is considered one of the best guitarist of all time. This was released on their 4th album in the early 70's.
Yep, saw them live twice - not sure of the exact dates but they were both in summer months - one in 69/70 and the other 2 or 3 years later.
When you say that Jimmy wrote the song, don’t forget to mention that Robert Plant wrote the lyrics. ,most people don’t understand the difference between “writing a song”….in other words creating the melody and chordal structure, and writing the lyrics to match the melody. Jimmy didn’t write lyrics.

As great as Eddie Van Halen was he wishes he could be Jimmy Page the true compositional master. Also note, the double neck guitar you see. The upper is a 12 string for full rhythms and the lower is the solo machine.
EVH never composed a song close to this or The Rain Song, Kashmir,etc. Yeah he was a clean player, had technique, but what epic songs did he ever write. Page is hands down the better composer and musician.

Yes saw Zeppelin in 1977 Chicago stadium for$10.. Became my favorite band ever since.. They are amazing... Had sent away for tickets through the Chicago tribune that had a oder form to fill out with a check for I believe$20 back then that was for the American your of 1980..right after form and check was sent.. News came in the John Bonham had died.. And of course the rest of Tour was canceled along with Zeppelin.. I believe the UK saw the tour of" In through the outdoor " but it never got to Chicago not sure if any other us cities got to see them...

The song is esoteric in nature, like a poem left open to interpretation. I first heard this song around 1974. We didn’t much care what the lyrics meant but it was always the last song played at dj’d event, a dance etc. Every Friday and Saturday night it was the last song played at the skating rink, and was a couples “moonlight” skate. Which was awesome because it was a long song and at 15 years old skating with a girlfriend was the peak, the longer the better. All these years later the song means something different to me, the lady in the song is Lady Liberty and unfortunately everything that glitters is not gold.
Also..Eddie Van halen was inspired by Jimmy page the guitar player for zeppelin. They are similar in there style of playing 👍😎

It's really not a Christian conspiracy. It's called backward masking. I don't think it was intentionally put there by Led Zeppelin, but a result of the satanic influence going on behind the scenes. I had heard about it, but never took it seriously until after I became a Christian. I took that song, recorded it on my reel to reel tape, flipped it around and played it backwards. Though somewhat distorted, you can definitely hear phrases like. "Glory glory. Here's to my sweet Satan." "He will give you 666" and others that I can't recall at the moment.
It was shocking to me, being a musician and song writer as well. I had just recently cut a demo tape myself. There was one particular song I had written on that tape, where I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I had finished it. It was creepy. I took my own song and played it backward and found that it also had phrases in it that I know I did not put there intentionally; phrases like "Sleep now child" "Who is nice? My Nick is" "Hurry man my Nick will lick it" "Open up my Spanish coffin" References to an old man etc... Some of this was in Spanish and some in English. I am Hispanic. I was even more shocked than with Stairway to Heaven. I played this for a Christian friend of mine. When they heard all this talk about Nick, they told me that Nick was an old English term for the devil. Well I happened to have a very old Webster's exhaustive dictionary (It's not in the newer abridged versions) and looked it up. Sure enough, it was right there, as was the phrase, "sometimes referred to as "old Nick or old man." So this was no longer a conspiracy for me. I saw this for myself. I didn't even know this stuff about Nick or Old man referencing the devil, yet there it was in my own music. The spirit realm is real. It's not a joke.

It's a double necked electric guitar - 12 strings on top and 6 strings on the bottom guitar. Jimmy Page had it custom made by Gibson in 1970, bc those guitars were out of production at the time.
Jimmy starts out on the 6 string, as the song progresses, speeds up and thickens musically - he switches to the 12 string and all the way to the "farfare" chords -- just prior to the guitar solo.
For the solo, he switches to the 6 string for that part -- then coming out of the solo --- when they're rocking hard --- he switches back to the 12 string-- for the outro jam section.
You're right about the double entandre stuff. This is about Bonzo, Robert and Jimmy signing a pact with the Devil -- back in 1968.
John Paul Jones -- the bass player, keyboardist, bass pedals, Mellotron didn't sign the Faustian Pact with the Devil. He remained unscathed during the Led Zeppelin years. Robert and Bonzo (and Page) all paid a heavy price for it.
Robert has distanced himself from this song --- over the last few decades. Jimmy Page laughs and denies the Satanic message and connection --- but that what a proper Satanist does --- you keep hush about it.
John Bonzo Bonham paid with his life, on Sept 25th,1980. It's sad, bc we miss him and he was getting better and better at his craft. They did not continue without him.
Robert Plant almost became crippled from a car crash, in which his wife was almost killed in , in Aug of 1975.
Plant's son, Karac, died on July 26th, 1977, which abruptly ended Led Zeppelin's mammoth record breaking 1977 US tour.

This song was recorded on either July 27th, 28th or 29th, 1973 at Madison Square Garden. It's not the 1980s 🙂🙌
There is a very dark meaning to this song. The hints are all over the place in the lyrics. Forests, the Piper, the May Queen, some times words have two meaning --- In a tree by the brook, there's a song bird who sings 'Some times all of our thoughts are misgiven' -- "And, I think you can see that..." He sings.
They absolutely worshipped the old blues guys from the 19teens, up through the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s -- they loved Robert Johnson --- he went to the Crossroads in Clarksdale, Mississippi, on a full moon and there he met Legba --- who taught RJ how to sing and tuned his guitar for him and taught him to play --- in exchange for his soul.
Johnny Shines, the blues artist, who often saw Robert Johnson, and traveled with him ,- told the story.
The story goes: Robert was playing at the juke joint -- he borrowed a guitar from someone and tried to perform. It was awful --- according to Shines. Johnson got booed off the stage.
Johnny Shines crossed paths again with Johnson a few months later --- and Johnson was playing his guitar and singing better than anyone he had ever seen --- according to Shines video taped interview.
In 1936, Robert did two prolific recoding sessions, which are unmatched -- by any of his peers.
Many Rock and Roll artists in the 1960s picked up on these recordings -- talk about how beautifully haunting many of Johnson's songs were.

For 80s guitar solos, there are some very good ones BUT those guitarists are trying to copy the 60/70 guitarists tgat inspired them to play. Van Halen, Ray Vaughn, Knopler, all consider the rock gods as Hendrix, Page, Clapton and Beck.

I love LZ, but I much prefer the studio version. The layers of this song are more pronounced, and the guitar solo is cleaner.

You are probably correct in that the song is covered in darkness, insofar as much of the band’s activities were influenced by HEAVY narcotics, acid, heroine, etc, and that is a pristine playground for demonic spirits and the occult to enter and control a man’s soul. There is no man alive who can perform and entertain at that level for hours on end without the influence of chemicals, especially considering the shear intensity of that style of music. Despite their proclivities, they are considered and remain one of, if not the most talented and influential bands of all time. It has been argued that each of its members are of the very best at their skill(s) and that together possibly represent the most consummate of bands that have ever graced the stage. I didn’t grow up with an ear or liking for rock or heavy metal, but I do have an ear for qualifying musical talent and musicianship, and LZ is certainly top tier of all time in that particular genre, as their musical talent in my opinion is variably unmatched. Talent is off the charts, from bass to lead guitarists, to drummer and lead vocals/harmonica, not to mention charisma,,,they are a phenomenal band whether you love or hate their brand or style.

Van Halen saw Jimmy Page play "Heartbreaker" live and saw him playing without picking the notes, just hammering and pulling off... That's where Van Halen figured out he could play "Eruption" without picking... Jimmy was an innovator. His ability to switch seamlessly between harmonic minors and blues solo scales is other-worldly. He's the greatest guitarist of all time IMO (2 & 3 are Hendrix and Jerry Garcia in no particular order). He went for it. Always. Plant's blistering vocals are other worldly. JPJ's flute synth is etherial and set the tone of "The Piper", not to mention he's playing the bass with his feet.... this is a call to action to AVOID the "Pied Piper," as it is a metaphor for the Black Plague that so many suffered from. "Yes, there are two paths you can go by, buy in the long run, there's still time to change the road you're on." Not to mention, Bonzo is the greatest drummer of all time.

That's not Eddie Van Halen (a different band). It's Jimmy Page playing lead guitar. Also, the song doesn't have to "mean" anything. You can interpret it any way you like. Robert Plant (singer) said that it was a song of hope.
The guitars in "Sing for the Moment" are from Aerosmith's "Dream On". If you don't know anything about them then get on it, Aerosmith are rock icons. Not necessarily my cup of tea but I still know all of their music. That's how iconic they are.

Mug, I haven't been on here as much, scrambling for work and such, but yeah you're close, that's called a double-neck guitar, and they became a phenomenon with rock stars in the 70s but the thing is these guys actually use them for a real purpose. When you have a normal guitar, and you are good and no your instrument inside and out, you can make that thing do 8 billion different things. You can switch between the neck and the bridge pickups. You can roll off the tone control, this will make it more trouble or more Bass. You can adjust the volume for any given pick up configuration with another knob on the guitar, you could have a whammy bar, and then of course you have all the effects pedals before it even goes into the amp and then of course you have all the amp settings but here's the deal ...
Especially in a song that is as long and it as ambitious as this, you know if you really want to get far afield even outside the parameters of making your instrument do whatever you want, you would have to like switch out guitars and stuff so once these guys had enough Prestige and money, they would commission people to craft these double-neck guitars for them and so one of the next has one set of pickups and characteristics in action and really anything you want, and the other has a different one. So you can switch back and forth between them and it just gives you so much more versatility while you are performing.
This song actually started as three different tunes that couldn't resolve until Page and Plant wove them together. The lady could be a materialistic person - an influencer - who believes in flashy trashy things 'all that glitters is gold '. And she's used to getting her own way 'with a word she can get what she came for'. But heaven doesn't come from materialism 'your stairway lies on the whispering wind'.

Robert Plant went out on his own, and IMO one of his best solo songs was Big Log...the acustic guitar was just mesmerizing.

Stairway to Heaven is the #1 played song on Classic Rock stations and it has been this way for years. It is considered a Rock masterpiece. One of the most interesting videos to watch to learn about the song and the musical transitions is by Jimmy Page (guitarist & music composer) as he explains the intent of what they were doing. He wanted layers that build to a crescendo.
I actually like that the lyrics are obtuse and open for interpretation; it’s pretty darn good for a 21 yr old to write a song that has had over 50 yrs longevity that people are still talking about.
