Will Joan Mir leave MotoGP at the end of the season? 🤔

  • After spending his entire MotoGP career at Suzuki and winning the 2020 title, Joan Mir suddenly found himself needing a new team when the factory decided to quit at the end of 2022.
Now in the second and final year of his current Repsol Honda contract, the 26-year-old must make a similar call to former team-mate Marc Marquez:
Should Mir stay and bet on a Honda recovery or seek instant competitiveness by moving to a European bike, even if that means joining a satellite team?
“I have options on the table, but I don't really know what I want to do,” Mir said. “I need a bit more time, to understand, to take a good decision for my future. This is the reality.”
After 24 top-five finishes, including 13 podiums and a race win, at Suzuki, Mir scored just 26 points at Honda last season.
Of the six grand prix he finished, between accidents and injuries, the Spaniard’s best was a fifth place in India, his only top ten appearance.
While Mir is Honda’s top rider in the early 2024 standings, he has scored just twelve points and finished no higher than twelfth in a grand prix.
What does the future hold for the 2020 MotoGP World Champion? Let us know in the comments below.

  • @sburns2421

His stock has definitely dropped in the past year. Not because of his performance this year where he is the best Honda rider. But because Marquez was so much better last year on the same bike. But I think he still has decent options. If he cannot get an Aprilia or GasGas, which seem like long shots IMO, and the Ducati house will be almost certainly full in the next few weeks.
    1. Yamaha. Rins isn't exactly comparing well to Fabio. Maybe Yamaha would like two former world champs to rebuild the team
    2. Stay at Honda. As crazy as it sounds this may be a good choice if he has a good relationship with HRC and thinks they will improve. Not unlike Fabio choosing to stay at Yamaha.
    3. WSBK top team. Hopping on Bautista's V4R (assuming he retires) would be a great option. Pairing with Toprak at BMW would be a great way to compare how Toprak compares to a great rider on the same bike. BMW joining GP in 2027 is also a consideration if he is successful in the mean time.
    4. WSBK (Honda). Keep the HRC relationship going and build that team through 2025-26. And keep the door open for a return to GP if the '27 RC214V is good.

Mir to Trackhouse. They will treat him well, they will have a current 2025 factory bike that works well. I dont mean to sound cold, however, unless Raul and Miguel can be on the podium at least four times each by the end of the season, replace both of them. Second Trackhouse rider as Mir's teammate, well, that depends on how much money Trackhouse can invest and what sponsorship gets behind the team. Assuming they have both i would first try and get Bulega from World Superbike. I just dont see Joe Roberts getting the job done in MotoGP (and I'm an American). Is Zarco available for 2025? That would work. Digi would work. I love him but not Miller, it is time for him to transfer to a team test rider. Best of all if somehow available would be Enea Bastianini. That would be golden though i see him as more an Aprilia factory rider replacing Alexi if he transfers to team test rider.

IMO he may lose the factory bike but do not be surprised if he rides for VR46 on a 2024 spec bike next year. Digi was only signed because all other riders were taken. He doesn't deserve to lose his place but I don't see him staying at VR46 next year even if he equals Bezz as is the case 1/3 through the year. Rossi seems to use the team to promote VR46 Academy riders only if given a choice. Otherwise Ducati would push for Aldeguer to go there an learn the Ducati (and probably from the old man himself).

If Aleix doesn't retire give him Fernandez's spot with a 2025 if possible, if not I'd give him a 2024 and have him and Oliveira compete for the 2026 bike.
The only new development for me if I was in Mir's position is the 2027 rule change if Honda is telling him "stay with us we've abandoned '25 and '26 and we're going to give you a brand new bike for '27 that's more advanced than anyone else could do" that might catch my attention.

No, he is too good for WSBK. He should go to Trackhouse. The key is to get on an Aprilia RS-GP, I consider that as the second best bike on the grid after the GP24. One thing for sure he must leave Honda. No amount of money can compensate for that losing and hopeless feeling in riding a complete lemon at Honda. It is rumoured even Marini can't handle it. I am sure he thought it was a great idea at the time to get paid and to ride for a factory team granted a terrible factory team. Again, like Mir he wants out too and the chances are they could be fighting for the same seat at Trackhouse or they could even form the new pairing there.

All but a handful of riders are unsigned for next year as of mid-May. But with a finite number of GP bikes and at least one (Aldeguer) rider moving up, at least one current GP rider will be without a ride next year.
The only other Moto2 rider that might move up is Roberts, although I don't think he will set the world on fire if he does. Ogura may replace Taki but that bike seems reserved exclusively for Japanese riders.
So what current rider(s) will be out of MotoGP next year??? In order of likelihood IMO
Augusto Fernandez (Acosta makes him look very bad on the same bike)
Raul Fernandez (may get caught out in the contract cycle if Trackhouse sign Roberts/Mir/Miller/AMarquez etc)
Taki Nakagami (floundering on the Honda. If he is fired he will be replaced by Ogura)
Fabio DiGianntonio (I read nothing about where he may go, don't see him staying at VR46)
Joan Mir (it would be his choice to take a sabbatical or move to another series)
Aleix Espargaro (retirement, either encouraged or voluntary)
Franco Morbidelli (if his results do not improve he may call it quits)
Alex Marquez (may get caught out in contract signing timing)
