this is one of the best, most thorough feeding guides I've found! I recently added 6 otos to my community tank, and want to make sure I give them the best diet I can!
I was sent oto's unexpectedly with a first order, i guess because there wasn't enough of one of the types i was buying. Thanks so much for all this info, I'm just trying to not let them die needlessly at this point.
The neons keep eating my otto's algae wafers and get really fat afterwards. Ottos eat them too but I wish the neons stuck with their own diet. Neons: the raccoons of the fish world!
Thanks for such an informative video! I am new to Otos and I learned more watching your video than the big named aquarium vlogers I've seen. My Oto group will be much happier now that I can care for them properly. Thanks!
That really means the world to me! The more we can change the care that’s spread, the better for the otos. There’s a lot people don’t do that’s the reason they die off!
I know this is 2 years old but hoping you still check comments! I'm in Australia and thus have an abundance of Eucalyptus and melaluca leaves. I'm not expecting all to be safe, but would teatree (melaluca alternifoilia (spelling may be off) be safe? I have a strawberry and berry patch in my edible garden too so if not safe I still have safe options! But if they can benefit from tea tree, it's just another use for all the branches when it's time to prune!! And Eucalyptus trees drop leaves all year round. So I never lack a source of Eucalyptus. I use them in my tanks of native Australian fish of course.
Hey! I would avoid using those leaves solely because both tea tree produces oil, and I’m not sure how fish that are not native and exposed to it, might react. However I would suggest searching through forums for various opinions and then make an informed decision! There’s a vast world of information on these specific things that can tell you more than I can ♥️
They feed on algae and whatever organisms that live and eat on it, 3:57 is this what you meant by surface feeding? Because that’s called grazing on algae, surface feeding is when fish feed from the surface of the water
I said surface grazers which is a term used for aufwuchs. It means on any surface covered in algae with other small microorganisms also living and feeding off of it.
I have a question, I had 4 otocinclus catfish but 3 of them passed away and now I only have one will it school with any of my other fish or will it be okay not having any other catfish? The fish i have is a pleco, a Molly, guppies, and some swordtails.
Excellent information!! I'm definitely going to try the hay and add some more veggies to my rotation. I've noticed when I feed my corydoras shrimp pellets, the otos come out to munch on the "powder" from the pellets breaking down that lands on the plants and wood. I've even seen them come to the bottom and eat with the corys! Otocinclus are just so cool and I look forward to trying to breed them with the help of your videos! :) 🖤
Trick what I got told was get some of them large white Stones stick them in a large tupperwear with some tank water and put them outside or in front of a a window where it gets alot of sun after while you will get algea on the stones remove them and place them back into the tank 🙂
Thank you for the great detailed info on otto catfish.I am new to keep them and excited to try and see what they would like. I got cilantro (fresh) on hand right now. How ca I feed those? Pick out one leaf from stem and wash and float to the tank and they would come and eat them? How long can I keep cilantro in the tank? I can also get fresh basil as well.Just tear and drop into tank?Thank you.
I would try maybe a day or two in the tank and observe! You could stake it to some driftwood or on the glass, otos like hanging out more in the middle/bottom. I am really not 100% sure how long they can be kept in since we have very little information on them still but I got my information from forum browsing. Let me know how it goes!
@@finsandwhiskers Thank you! I tried boiled zucchini. One out of 6 Otto came to nibble some but did not stay there long enough to actually see the eating progress. Do you think it is ok to keep it in the tank 24 hour or since it was not added raw, it is best to take it out before going bed? Thank you.
Love your passion for Otocinclus. Amazing to see a young person diving deep into a subject like this. 6 months ago I got a small school of 6 Otos, and keep them in a 60 liter tank with Endlers and Neocaridinas. Now that I know how they are caught in the wild, I'll definitely try to breed them. Setting up their own tank just for them, inspired by your videos and a few videos from www.youtube.com/@MARKSAQUATICS
Mine are not picky eaters. They like kale, spinach, zucchini, cucumber and so on. I make my own wafers with spirulina, nettle leaves, salvinia, maybe some brown rice flour, based of off what I saw in this clip: ruclips.net/video/U3kt_bkFCPY/видео.html
thank you for all your support from the bottom of my heart.

Yeahhhh that’s why I keep an otocinclus and shrimp exclusive tank, because most other fish will eat the algae wafers too. :( Unfortunate!

How often should you feed otos if there's no algae in the tank?
New to Ottos. this is super helpful. thank you
Well done and very informative. Thank you.

in my tank the others fish's gets ottos food, I think the ottos are hungry but they can't get the food cause the others are faster, what can I do?
Pronunciation is great on aufwuchs!
Oh so good to know 😮💨

They need their own kind, it won’t be the same resource if they shoal around with other fish. Think of it like language!
you are absolutely awesome! love those little complicated guys and you re always on point !!!
Thank you so much! They are the best!!

You can leave it in if your tank is fully established/planted :)
Good job on the video!

Ye you said Aufwuchs right (I'm german).😊

Hello, may I reprint this video to China's video platform? Because many people in China can't raise this fish well, I want to share it with them.
You can explain the video but republishing won’t be allowed, I worked hard on this video for my channel
@@finsandwhiskers thank you☺️
Can u over feed them?
Not really just make sure they are getting more plant food than protein! (Unless breeding)
You are so sweet, subscribed ☺️
That circle chart is a Pie Chart
Thank you 😭

Mix spirulina with unflavour gelatine, it doesn't cloud the water that way
If I could get my hands on agar agar I would definitely bind it with that
i feed my ottos with hikari alge wafers and boiled cucumber
