- England was awarded a penalty when they were trailing 0-1 against the Netherlands in the semifinal of Euro 2024. while England fans were happy, the Dutch players and their coach was unhappy with the decision. Was the VAR right in suggesting a penalty? Watch the video for more.
I'm English and agree that it wasn't a penalty. The Netherlands were robbed of the chance to go to more time and potentially win. But the refs have been utterly atrocious in this entire competition this time.

No it wasn’t a penalty, the referee or the VAR should have stop the the play before that when Saka made hands. ( but I guess they were afraid some one of the England team would comment on the match fixing history of Mr Zwayer again so they decided to help England a bit)

How about Saka's handball seconds before Kane made his shot? This penalty was a disgrace. You cannot try to win at any price. English fans must not become omnivorous.
Who initiated the contact? If it's tge defender, then award a foul and thus penalty kick.
If it's the attacker, then play on or award the defender a free kick.
Ref decided to play on, good call, but only to be called back by var.
If var overrules a ref, they should look at the total picture, including what preceeds the 'supposed foul' (like they did with hand ball from Belgium, when disallowing a goal).
Could have seen a handball from Saka, just before the Kane kick.
In all: a very bad decision by the var!!

Any where else on the pitch its a free kick, so why not a penalty. Unwritten laws are just that , unwritten so are not valid.

The game is based on rules, and the use of VAR is there to highlight what is deemed to be a questionable or incorrect decision and gives the ref the opportunity to look at the incident again, so, the same referee who initially gave a goalkick changes his decision to a penalty, which was the correct one based on the rule;
'It is committed with an opponent nearby and prevents the opponent from playing the ball for fear of injury. Playing in a dangerous manner involves no physical contact between the players. If there is physical contact, the action becomes an offence punishable with a direct free kick or penalty kick.'
This is how Romania felt when the referee was totally on Netherlands side !

Not only a penalty, but a red card offence. If the ball has left a player when he was roughly (and in this case dangerously) challenged by an opponent, it is a foul against the opponent. If the foul was within the 18 yard box, it is definitely a penalty. I wonder why some people would choose to always appeal to sentiments or lend a negative voice to issues. Thank God for the introduction of VAR; the referee would have awarded a goal kick at the risk of sidelining Harry Kane for the rest of the tournament and even beyond.
All we talk about is Decisions in games...the game itself has become irrelevant.

Its a penalty for dangerous play inside the penalty area. Harry Kane can lost his carrier by serious injury when faults like this is created in front of goal. This is not a National debate but being humane or inhumane. The referee showed humanity by awarding a penalty. Bravo!!

It wasn't a penalty. It wasn't a foul in or outside the box. Kane kicked the ball and then kicked Dumfries foot. That was clearly what happened. VAR can get it wrong. Its irrelevant wether its your own team or not. If that happened against England we would soon be complaining.
If had happened anywhere else on the pitch it would ave been a free kick ,he lead with his studs so dangerous play so was a penalty right decision

Please learn the difference between the EU and Europe. There are many European countries that are not in the EU. The EUFA Euro cup has nothing to do with the EU.

The defender went for Harry Kane' s leg instead of ball. However, he attempted to lock the player's leg in the goal area. The Netherlands did not go after the ball but the leg. That should also be a red card as well.

Yes it was a penalty.. because he showed his studs causing injury.. and the ref didn't have all angles.. VAR.. did .. and if this happened to the Netherlands team and awarded a penalty. When a foul happens inside the penalty area, what actually follows?!! What do you think if a defender shows his studs directly to the kicking feet of the player? Whether the clash took place before or, after kicking the ball, doesn't matter that was a 💯% foul inside the penalty area!
Losers complain but that was far too unrealistic for a captain to talk about football rules without sensing the reality of the football rule book based on "common sense"!
