I love how despite the fact that the Doctor is aware that the Gas Mask boy is possibly dangerous, he still opens the door when the boy says he’s scared of the bombs. It’s kind how the Doctor has sympathy for a scared child even though the child is a monster.
He was the same as a child, alone and scared
Ngl.....errybody talking about how scared they are but I'm here with my heart breaking for a little child scared of the bombs looking for his mommy... aww and when he shows his scar on his hand.... I have a 3 year old... it absolutely kills me.
@@gunblade7610this shit gives me nightmares
@@gunblade7610I believe they did a sequel EPPISODE and he got help
@@VoidMcNoid It wasn't a sequel episode, as such -- it was a two-part story; "The Empty Child" was part 1, and the next week's episode, "The Doctor Dances", was part 2. 🙂 NewWho went back to the original Hartnell-era practice of each episode of a story having its own unique title, rather than the "Title: Episode X" format that they switched to towards the end of Hartnell's 3rd season.
probably the most terrifying doctor who episode of all time
Nah, fam. Blink was scary the first time, but after a few more viewings, it lost it's scary-ness. Meanwhile, I still can't watch this episode without having nightmares.
I believe the empty child is scarier, the angles cannot do much harm, they only send you back in time and let you live your life to the fullest and I believe but I'm not sure they feed of the time energy.
watch "Night Terrors"
Texas Ball
Night Terrors isn't quite as scary, but then again this is my opinion.
The Creepiest Of Pasta are you my mummy?
My former history teacher had an authentic WWII gas mask in her cupboard and when we did the WWII unit she would let us look at it. A friend of mine decided it would be fun to cause a mental breakdown that day, so they put on the mask, came up behind me, and said "are you my mummy?" in a spot-on impression of Jamie (the empty child)

We had one in primary school and we had a helmet as well. I think my teacher found it in his parents attic or something.
Hearing the tenth doctor say "are you my mummy" with the gas mask on was utter brilliance.
The Poison Sky, if I'm correct.
Yup you got it, when the sontarans were gassing the planet.
He forgot his lines, and since he saw a gas mask he said that instead.
How old ru now
Doctor: What's this, then? It's never easy being the only child left out in the cold, you know.
Nancy: I suppose you'd know.
Doctor: I do, actually, yes.

So sad
Huh. Dark.

I know it too
I think this proves that Steven Moffat is a much better writer than he is a showrunner and I think his stories will be excellent again if he returns once in a while.
Yes totally. I really haven't liked his time as show-runner, save for a few stories, but I loved his standalone stories in the RTD era, such as this one, or Girl in the Fireplace, or Silence in the Library.
*EDIT:* That said, I now purely believe that the classic series is INFINITELY better than the dire "modern series."
Of course, you're entitled to your own opinion, but I always preferred Moffat to RTD as showrunner - Series 5-10 > Series 1-4 as far as I'm concerned!
@@bun6134 It's been 2 years and I definitely agree. I do still think he's a better writer than showrunner but he's still good at showrunning
Every writter loses something when they get stretched
when was in the middle of watching this someone knocked on my door.
lol same here
Me to, from my wardrobe 😭😭😭 so scared
Same I opened the door and hit my brother with my guitar screaming "DIE I AM NOT YOUR MUMMY!!" Until he was like "Zoey Zoey stop it!" I stood there like 😳 "oops doctor who" then I shut the door. But then a hour later him and his friends through rocks at my window with gas masks on saying "let me in mummy" well then I grabbed my dads paintball gun and they ran. Haha good days good days!

I wish Doctor Who was still like this.

I wasn't scared but this ep was high in the creep factor.
I was scared and creeped out.
ikr... I... I... On my... Mu-mu-mummy! Are you my mummy?
My friend and I were talking about that ep and I did "Are you my mummy." She told me I creeped her out becauseI sounded just like the kid in the episode. LOL
I agree
Oh ye you are 100% correct
I was 4 when this came out. I remember my grandmother warning me that "tonight's Doctor Who is going to be a really scary one, you'll hide behind the sofa". But I braved it out ;)
Damn. You didn't even play DOOM
Hiding behind the sofa just like the old days 😊
Legit creepiest episode ever.
fun fact my little sister was SUPER. drugged up at the hospital and was saying are you my mummy and in my response I said no mummy's here just us chickens well this chicken she just laughed on and on

I love how we can now get that after all these years and it can mean so much
I was watching this once and my little sister came in and said "Have you seen Mummy?" and I screamed "GET AWAY FROM ME YOU EMPTY CHILD!!!!!!" I felt so bad afterwards!
Fire Crystal Oh god! LOL!!! 😁😁😂😂
To be fair I’d probably say the same
I knocked on my friends door ages ago saying 'Mummy!' 'Are you my mummy' and then I heard them scream xD
Maisie521 Ha!! LOL
Quite a natural response
I loved Eccleston's Doctor. He was the first Doctor in the revived series, and he did a great job at playing a damaged character which I think is important for someone who list their entire race (which is something I think was lost with Tennant's doctor, except for when he lost Rose). I loved the goofy grin and the fun he had. So many of the themes in season one were so deep. Season one had some great episodes. I honestly don't get why so many people don't like nine.
People don’t like 9?!?!?!
@@alwaysshit yes mainly coz 9 didnt like 9
@@alwaysshityeah, but I think a lot of that is retrospective because Tennant and Smith were so good
I actually feel very sorry for that little boy. He’s searching everywhere in the universe for his mother, and can’t find her. Sure, he’s pretty terrifying in how he causes people to get those creepy masks on their faces, but still he’s a poor lonely, scared kid going around looking for his mother, and everyone is frightened of him.
In a way, he isn't. In this state he's just a mindless drone programmed to repeat those words
The nanogenes found him in that state which is where the sad part is. He was alone in the dark, possibly looking for Nancy. He thought she was his sister, but deep down he just wanted his mummy
THANKS!!! I'm not the only one. Everyone was afraid of the kid but I felt like I'm the only one who felt bad for him.... he's scared of the bombs and looking for his mom and he has a cut on his hand... ugg... I have a 3 year old and this absolutely kills me.
this is hands down one of the best episodes of the 2000s
Yeah, I like all the banana jokes too.
Gives me goosebumps, a child would tear the world apart to find this mummy.
And this one can and will do so in order to find her.
As would I
If I was the doctor when the empty child says "Are you my mommy" I would be like nope! and run away
2:01 Hearing the kid say that was actually kinda sad.
I watched this when I was four. I am now fourteen. I have only just been able to watch this.
I know the feeling
whoa, 20 now. how's life going for you?
Now ur 24
i regret watching this episode at 2 AM
same
Same here. Watched it on Halloween as well
This is honestly the scariest episode of doctor who, gave me nightmares as a child
Are you my mummy
And this writing at the door: "Always wear a gas mask" Moffat's perfection
As a child I could watch lord the rings and be perfectly fine watching orcs slice people's heads off but this episode of Doctor who haunted my dreams for literally years.
When i was watching this on tv,, i had a knock on my door
i was so scared that i shouted "IM NOT YOUR MUMMY!! EEEK!!"
after a few seconds i had a reply: "uhhh pizza delivery"
Max Julian The scary question, though, is "Did you actually order pizza?"
PLOT TWIST OMGGG!
Max Julian *demented giggling*
Coral Roper maybe it was like tarot from housepets. She ordered the delivery to your house to the exact time you wanted a pizza and was about to go order one before you order one. I love when she does those things in the comics XD
magnusm4 Whoa. Someone else who knows Housepets! That's great!
Then watch, some time in the future there's gonna be an episode where the Empty return, and they'll be like "Are you my daddy?"
TLGames hah lol yeah!
Wouldn’t make sense fr the empty to return
If i heard that i wound be like, "Nope nu-huh i'm done, I'M SO DONE!"

Eccleston seemed so jovial even in the face of danger.
I watched this when I was nine once, i couldn't sleep for weeks, it was just recently (I'm 14 now) that I really got over it, i couldn't see a gas mask without almost crying, so yeah this hunted me more then anything
My mum hasn't been able to look at a gas mask since me her and my dad watched this episode in 2005...how time flys by...
I was nine when I first saw it, too. The gas mask is still the image I associate most strongly with fear. The episodes are god damn masterpieces, and while scary to lots of people of all ages, the nine-ish age group seems to be particularly vulnerable.
Totally get you with this. Took me 13 years to get over the fear!!
Are you my mummy
He used to write the occasional single episode when RTD was in charge, this being one of them. He was better at doing that than showrunning.
0:10 After watching Listen, that exchange has so much more meaning
This has been and continues to be my favorite episode (or really two favorite) in the show. I love this era (not so much the London Blitz.. but like the 1940s fashion and design wise) the acting is great, it’s genuinely scary, and the ending and little twist is very well done
Imagine how many people they had to get for this SINGLE EPISODE
The Empty Child was the first Doctor Who episode I ever watched. I was hooked straight away. I still can't believe it has been over 8 years since this episode first aired.
and now even more
and now even more
Now, 18 years
I saw the doctor turn to one of them and he was in pain. I can't imagine what that child had to experience
Chris D. Well technically the child died. The nanogenes found him dead and assumed humans should be like that.
This was the episode where Moffat won me over as a fan.
Rose and Jack are in doctor who and they like each other...same in titanic...illuminati confirmed
This has to be one of my most favorite Doctor Who stories of all time
This is one of quite a few Doctor👨⚕️Who episodes that genuinely scared me.
1:28 ITS A BOMB XD
Must be a Call of Duty Zombies fan.
If so, that's awesome.
"Are you my mommy?" Said the voice coming from the monkey bomb!
This was the first episode of Dr. Who that I ever watched. Boy did it scare me and left me wanting more.
Imagine a gas ask attached to your face that would be horrid
I watched this when it aired for the first time, freaked the hell out of me, only a couple other Doctor Who episodes from over the years have come close.
I remember seeing a gas mask in my living loft and I dropped my torch screamed and locked the door to it
It must be so heartbreaking for Nancy hearing her dead son's cries for her. you can see it in her face when she puts the phone down, she can't bare to hear him.
It's 2024, and this is the doctor who my children will grow up watching hiding behind the sofa
What is the pyros son doing here
Jarhead Gaming
Didn't you know? The Pyro can transcend all of time and space. The Pyro does not need to enter TARDIS for the Pyro is a TARDIS unto itself.
+G_Man sweet mother of god, the pyro could wipe us all out
I cant sleep now

Do Not open that... =,=; ... Door.
You would think that as many life times as that bloke has under his belt, he'd know at least One of the major rules of horror flicks. [rolls eyes]
Doctor Who with Eccelstone and Tenant were the best years.
When I saw this episode I always muted the " Mummy...let me in mummy! "
so...sup cupa the creeper?
I once explored an abandoned Esso Petrol Station in my dream when I was 9 years old, and when I approached the nearly boarded up shop, I got spooked by that empty child's voice saying: "are you my mummy?". I literally ran out of the forecourt, fearing that he was there....
Watched it alone in my living room, someone calles my phone too.Nightmares for days.
This episode was my induction to doctor who, And it had me hooked ever since.
Are you my mummy
"Are you my mummy?"
"No, this is Patrick"
This was definitely my favourite 9 episode. I loved it.

F*ck yeah!
Was shown this in drama class in yr4 and I had nightmares for years . Honestly terrified me
1:11 - the note on the door beneath the mail slot
+DarkFoxV 1:36 as well! xD
Well it was World War Two so it makes sense.
This legit scared me when I first saw it, brilliantly done, IMO!
This was my favorite Doctor Who episode when I was little
I really... really miss the 9th Doctor. People always say the first doctor you see is *your* doctor, but while I liked 8, 9 was always my Doctor.
I miss the hell out of Chris, and wish he'd have come back to the 50th. I don't care how the special is written, 9 was the one who ended the Time War.
One of the best episodes ever made.
This is the first episode of Doctor Who I ever saw. Opened one helluva door.
Strangest thing was, when I was 9 years old and dreamt of exploring the abandoned Esso Petrol Station, when I approached the almost boarded up shop, I heard that spooky voice of that gas masked child saying "are you my mummy?" and when I heard it, I quickly ran away from the abandoned Petrol Station.
Lost many a night of sleep due to this when I was younger
It would be difficult for any writer to keep to this quality for almost 10 years. I still think his recent scripts are good though.
I was like 6 when I saw this no wonder im so messed up and im able to creep my friends out, why was I never scared of this or things like the silence or weeping angels?? What was wrong with me!
Some people are scared of different things, it doesn't make you unique.
Wow, i thinked Empty Child is creepypasta :D
I think it should be lol
Well, even in series 1 it was always implied that 9 "walked away" from the Time War, leaving us to assume it was 8. I for actually prefer the idea of it being a Doctor we haven't seen before.
Funniest thing is, there was one time in my dream, where in my other world, I was at this abandoned petrol station, and as I was walking towards the shop, I heard that same voice and the same phrases from that gas masked child, and it spooked me, so I ran away from the petrol station as fast as I could!
Am I the only one who felt so bad for the kid and thought he was adorable and wasn't scared of him?
I literally feel like I’m in a horror movie
So while the 9th Doctor was down here, the 11th Doctor was with Winston Churchill fighting the Daleks. Interesting.
This story still gives me the chills.
This is sure to give me nightmares. I've seen this episode loads of times and I still get scared.
DON'T LET HIM IN DOCTOR!!!!!
“Please let me in mommy,I’m scared of the bombs.”
A very elaborate game of Knock'n'Run.
I watched a lot of episodes and loved it
when I was younger this cept me up at night.
As sweet as he is, THIS GIVES ME NIGHTMARES.
This made me question opening any door for months
idk if anyone else noticed the lil bit of foreshadowing we got in this clip, but on the door there's a sign that says "always carry your gas mask"
the child : are you my mummy

Ok, I have NEVER watched Doctor who because i live in america and I dont have anything to play it on but I was looking at weeping angels because i wanted to draw a picture of them and a picture of this kid showed up. So i searched the episode and HOLY CRAP THIS WAS TERRIFYING WHAT THE HECK. BUT SERIOUSLY IF THIS THING WAS REAL THAT WOULD BE SO BAD BECAUSE WHAT IF ONE OF THESE JUST CAME TO YOUR HOUSE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT OH GOSH.
Eight years and this is the only episode that's ever really scared me.
Ah yes, the episode that got me into Dr Who. Still terrifying.
I couldn’t sleep after watching this episode

Watching this at the age of 9 scarred me for a while
I was getting shocked by The empty children The weeping angels and Silence except the Daleks and the cybermen
